Understanding Your Cat’s Bloodwork: CBC, Chemistry, and What Results Mean

A CBC and chemistry panel offer clues about a cat’s health—not a diagnosis on their own. Learn how to read flags, understand common patterns, and discuss results with your veterinarian.

Cat bloodwork is a set of clues, not a diagnosis. A complete blood count (CBC) measures blood cells; a chemistry panel measures substances such as glucose, electrolytes, and creatinine in the liquid part of the blood. Your veterinarian interprets both alongside your cat’s age, symptoms, examination, history, and previous results.

What routine cat bloodwork includes

Routine testing commonly combines a CBC and a chemistry panel, though the exact contents vary by clinic, laboratory, and reason for testing. Check the panel name and your cat’s report to see what was actually measured.

Complete blood count (CBC)

A CBC measures red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. Red-cell results can include the red blood cell count, hemoglobin, hematocrit, and red-cell indices. White-cell results commonly include a differential, which breaks down types of white blood cells. Platelet measures relate to clotting. A blood smear may be reviewed to assess cell appearance and check automated analyzer findings. Some panels include a reticulocyte count, particularly when a cat is anemic.

Chemistry panel

A chemistry panel measures substances in serum or plasma—the liquid portion of blood. Depending on the panel, these may include glucose, sodium, potassium, calcium, and creatinine. The results help a veterinarian assess biochemical patterns and organ systems, but one chemistry value alone does not establish a disease.

Additional targeted tests

Depending on age, history, and clinical concern, the veterinarian may recommend tests beyond the CBC and chemistry panel. For example, FeLV/FIV screening may be appropriate for some cats, and thyroid testing may be considered for older cats. These are not automatically included in every routine bloodwork panel.

How to interpret reference intervals and flags

The reference interval printed on your cat’s report is the most relevant one to use. Intervals depend on a laboratory’s equipment, methods, and reagents; sample type can matter as well. Cornell University’s Animal Health Diagnostic Center says its reference intervals apply to results from its own laboratory, and that some chemistry intervals differ between serum and heparinized plasma. A range found online or on another lab’s report may not be comparable.

A flagged result means that the value is outside that laboratory’s reference interval. It is a finding to interpret, not a diagnosis. Reference intervals describe a population, not a guarantee that every healthy animal’s results will fall inside the range. Cornell says its intervals include 95% of normal samples, so up to 5% of normal animals may be outside an interval on a given test. When many tests are run, the chance of at least one flag rises: Cornell gives 46% across 12 tests and 66% across 21 tests. Those figures describe the mathematics of reference intervals, not the likelihood that a cat is ill.

Age and individual context matter, too. Cornell’s general guidance describes intervals established from healthy adult animals; kittens and older cats may need different clinical interpretation. A value just outside the interval may have a different significance from a large or changing abnormality, and the veterinarian will consider the full report and the cat.

What common bloodwork patterns can suggest

Red-cell results and anemia

Anemia means there are too few circulating red blood cells or too little red-cell material to carry oxygen adequately. Broad causes include blood loss, destruction of red blood cells, or reduced production. A CBC’s red-cell measures help identify anemia, while the reticulocyte count helps show whether the bone marrow is responding.

Reticulocytes are newly released red blood cells. An elevated reticulocyte count in an anemic cat can indicate a regenerative response; a low count may point toward inadequate production. Chronic kidney disease is one possible contributor to non-regenerative anemia, but it is not the only cause. A veterinarian may consider the smear, reticulocytes, chemistry results, examination, and further testing to investigate what is happening.

KIT4CAT CheckUp at Home Cat Wellness Test Kit | 2lb Hydrophobic Litter keeps urine on top, 2 Test Strips for The Detection of The 4 Most Common Health Indicators - pH, Protein, Glucose, Blood in urine
  • Natural sand is heavy, to avoid high costs as result of shipping and logistics, and after many years of testing, we arrived at an optimized amount of sand that is enough for the vast majority of cats to use once, yet still remain affordable. The amount of sand supplied in the 3 bags is meant for a one-time use all at once.
  • Unlike Other Non-absorbing products, our Cat Litter has a patented Hydrophobic coating, this unique feature allows urine to rest on top of the sand no matter how much your cat tries to bury it, it will pop right back up easily when you move the sand from on top of it.
  • Cats Love it! Its the only 100% Natural True Hydrophobic Sand That is Non-toxic and Odorless, Unlike Other Brands That Do Not Use Natural Sand. (Cats are picky animals, some more than others, and will take time to use the sand)
  • Unlike cystocentesis which involves an expensive invasive procedure, this method of Cat urine collection is clean, easy, quick and simple, and most importantly non-invasive, which can be done at-home before a visit at the Vet.
  • Early detection is important! Stay on top of your Cats health with the 2 testing Strips included and test for the 4 most common indicators for your pet's health - Glucose, Blood in the urine, pH, and Protein.

Kidney, liver, glucose, and electrolyte results

Chemistry results are interpreted together rather than one number at a time. A creatinine result or trend may prompt closer evaluation of kidney function, but a single result does not prove kidney disease. Likewise, blood-sugar patterns may lead a veterinarian to investigate diabetes, but one glucose value by itself is not a diagnosis. Electrolyte and liver-related findings also need to be considered alongside other results and the clinical picture.

Why trends and context matter

As Cornell eClinpath puts it, “Don’t interpret results in isolation.” The cat’s age and other identifying details, medical history, current signs, physical examination, and sometimes imaging all help determine what a result means. A veterinarian may also compare current values with prior tests to see whether a finding is persistent, improving, or worsening.

For the clearest comparison over time, use the same analyte, units, laboratory, analyzer or method, and sample type where possible. A change between reports from different laboratories or methods may not reflect a true change in your cat. If a result is questionable, the veterinarian may recommend repeating it to see whether it persists or changes.

Questions to ask your veterinarian

  • Which results matter most for my cat, and how do they fit the symptoms and examination?
  • Are any out-of-range values slight, or could sample or analyzer factors have affected them?
  • How do these results compare with my cat’s previous tests, and were the same laboratory and methods used?
  • Would a repeat test or another diagnostic test help? If so, when?
  • Do these findings need prompt attention, or is monitoring appropriate?

When to contact a veterinarian promptly

A bloodwork report should be interpreted by your cat’s veterinary team, not used to diagnose or treat your cat at home. Contact them for patient-specific guidance, especially if your cat is unwell. Severe anemia can become critical quickly. Cornell lists lethargy, pale or yellow gums, and breathing difficulty among possible signs; breathing difficulty or marked weakness warrants prompt veterinary attention.
