Loona is one of the strongest choices for autonomous indoor interaction. It has expressive eyes, voice interaction, face and gesture recognition, touch responses, games, and animated behaviors. KEYi’s official store listed the current Loona Petbot for sale, with recent US pricing around $499.90 and a reported discounted Premium price of about $429.
There is one important classification issue: Loona is not a four-legged walking robot dog. It moves on wheels and is designed primarily for indoor floors. That makes it a better fit for a home companion than for outdoor play, uneven surfaces, or owners specifically seeking a robotic puppy that walks on legs.
3. Sony aibo ERS-1000: best premium robot pet
Sony’s ERS-1000 is the most established premium companion robot in this group. It has a dog-like body, cameras and sensors, voice interaction, and personality-oriented behavior intended to make it feel more like an individual robotic puppy than a collection of preset tricks.
aibo is better suited to adults who want an advanced robotic companion than to children looking for a conventional toy. Expect a fundamentally different buying experience from a $35 remote-control model: check Sony’s current product, service, and regional terms before committing.
Regional restriction: Sony’s US listing states that aibo products and related services are not available for sale or use in Illinois or Baltimore, Maryland. Buyers in those locations should not assume that a US-market unit can be activated normally.
4. Petoi Bittle X V2: best for coding and STEM
Bittle X V2 is a small, open-source quadruped for people who want to build and program a robot rather than simply play with one. Its ESP32-based BiBoard supports Python, Arduino C++, Scratch-like block coding, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, voice control, and more than 35 movements. Petoi lists the construction kit at $319 and the pre-assembled version at $339.

The robot uses nine servo-powered joints, charges through USB-C, and has a stated battery life of about one hour. The construction kit takes roughly 40–60 minutes to assemble, depending on the version. A pre-assembled unit still needs calibration and fine-tuning if you want its movements to work well.
Version warning: Current Bittle X V2 hardware uses BiBoard V1 and does not support the infrared remote controller. Older Bittle X units using BiBoard V0 are different. Confirm the board version before buying accessories or following older tutorials.
Bittle X is not a plush toy. It is best for supervised use by older children, teenagers, makers, and adults who are comfortable troubleshooting hardware and software.
5. Elephant Robotics metaDog: best plush-style smart companion
metaDog combines a fur-covered Husky or Shiba Inu form with touch interaction, voice recognition, dog sounds, expressive eye animations, USB-C charging, and a game app. It offers a softer presentation than exposed educational robots while retaining more interactive technology than a conventional plush toy.

A RobotShop listing for the Husky version showed a price of approximately $258.48. Listed specifications included three touch-sensor areas, a 2,000-mAh battery, and a claimed battery life of 10–12 hours.
Choose metaDog when touch and voice interaction matter but a Sony aibo is outside your budget. It is still an electronic device with moving and interactive parts, not a washable stuffed animal or a replacement for a live pet.
6. JOY FOR ALL Companion Pet Pup: best for seniors and comfort
The JOY FOR ALL Companion Pet Pup is built around comfort rather than walking, programming, or app features. It responds to touch and sound, wags, makes puppy noises, and simulates a heartbeat. Current stock: The manufacturer’s product page showed the Pup as out of stock and directed shoppers to Amazon. The fur should not be soaked or placed under running water; clean it with an appropriate non-toxic cleaner or wipe and dry it afterward.
7. Contixo R3: best inexpensive remote-control toy
Contixo’s R3 is a conventional children’s robot dog with a remote control, touch responses, LED lights, sounds, dancing, singing, push-ups, and programmable tricks. Contixo lists it for ages 3–8. Its own price was $35.99, while Target showed blue and pink versions in stock at $34.99.
The R3 makes sense when a child wants buttons, movement, and simple programmed routines without an app-connected companion. It is not trying to imitate a real dog’s personality, and its feature set is much more limited than Loona, aibo, or the programmable quadrupeds.
Battery requirement: The toy uses four AA batteries and the remote uses two AAA batteries. Target says these are not included.
8. ROBO DASH D: best for fetch-style play
ROBO DASH D focuses on physical play. It uses gestures and an included ball-shaped remote to trigger behaviors such as following, barking, walking, tail-chasing, and fetching. That makes it a reasonable choice for children who would rather roll a ball and guide a robot than use an app or listen to extended voice interaction.
Retailer information described the functions but did not expose a consistently visible current price in the search result. Check the live listing for stock, shipping, the included ball remote, and battery requirements before buying.
9. SUGIFT Smart Interactive Robot Dog: best feature-heavy toy under $100
The SUGIFT model listed by Target packs a large number of toy functions into a relatively inexpensive wheeled robot. It includes voice and remote control, touch sensors, 13 voice commands, omnidirectional mecanum-wheel movement, a ball launcher, and a spray function. Target listed it in stock at $74.99, marked down from $149.99 during the research snapshot.
Its unusual features may appeal to children who want action-oriented play, particularly the ability to move sideways and launch a ball. However, this is a wheeled toy, not a lifelike walking dog. The launcher and spray functions may be unsuitable around pets, delicate furniture, or very young children, so supervise play and check exactly what the spray feature involves.

10. XiaoR GEEK MechDog/XR Dog: best programmable metal quadruped
The XR Dog, also called MechDog, is a robotics platform rather than a cuddly companion. RobotShop lists it at $379, with a 12-degree-of-freedom servo system, aluminum-alloy body, camera, iOS and Android control app, and more than 18 built-in actions.
It is a good middle ground for robotics students, technically inclined teenagers, and adult makers who want a four-legged machine without moving into the price and service model of a premium commercial robot pet.
Because it is marketed as an educational and research platform, treat it like a small robot project. Moving joints, hard body parts, and unexpected motion call for supervision around children and pets. It is not designed for cuddling or unsupervised household roaming.
11. Trendmaster Akita Inu Hachi EX: best limited-edition comfort robot
Hachi EX is a plush Akita-style companion with touch sensors, recorded real-dog sounds, and responses to stroking and voice. RobotShop listed the limited edition at $137.41, with nine units in stock when checked.

This model suits someone who wants tactile companionship rather than walking, tricks, coding, or an internet-connected AI pet. The major drawback is its limited availability: Trendmaster says the Hachi EX edition is capped at 500 units, so remaining stock should not be treated as continuing production.

The standard Hachi has sensors in its head, back, and tail, along with a sound sensor and recorded real-dog voices. Its barking changes depending on whether it is touched or stroked, creating a more responsive experience than a plush dog with a single button.
RobotShop lists it as using four AAA batteries, which are not included. The important buying distinction is that Trendmaster says the regular Hachi line ended sales in February 2025. Retailer listings may still have units, but this is remaining stock rather than a currently manufactured mainstream model.
How to choose a robot dog
- Decide whether legs matter. Loona, SUGIFT, and other wheeled models can be entertaining and capable indoors, but they do not walk like a quadruped. For legged movement, look at aibo, Bittle X V2, or MechDog.
- Match complexity to the user. Contixo R3 and ROBO DASH D are easier for young children. Bittle X and MechDog require more technical involvement. aibo and Loona are companion products rather than ordinary toys.
- Check power before checkout. Some models use replaceable AA, AAA, or C batteries; others charge by USB-C or use a rechargeable battery. Confirm whether batteries are included.
- Verify phone and service compatibility. Dog-E’s Android 14 support was still pending in the checked listing. Connected robots may also depend on current apps, accounts, Wi-Fi, or regional services.
- Inspect the play environment. Hard quadrupeds, wheels, launchers, sprays, pinch points, and loose accessories can be a poor match for toddlers, cats, dogs, fragile furniture, or cluttered floors.
- Separate “interactive” from “intelligent.” A toy may react to touch, sound, or preset commands without learning or using AI. Use the manufacturer’s documented features rather than assuming every marketplace claim means genuine AI.
Safety notes for homes with children and pets
Robot dogs are toys or machines, not automatically pet-safe products. Moving legs and wheels can pinch fingers or frighten animals; small accessories and batteries can create hazards; loud sounds may stress sensitive dogs and cats. Follow the stated age range, supervise young children, keep battery compartments secured, and introduce a moving robot slowly to resident pets.

Do not let a plush companion get soaked, and do not leave a programmable or hard-bodied quadruped operating near a sleeping pet, stairs, or a child who may grab its joints.
