No single dog crate is best for every dog: the right choice depends on your dog’s behavior, the crate’s intended use, and a proper fit. This comparison covers options for puppy training, home use, escape-prone dogs, car travel, portability, airline-style travel, and furniture-style design; it is not a claim of hands-on testing of every crate.
Chewy’s selections, for example, are based on customer-review analysis, veterinarian input, and popularity rather than hands-on product tests. Check current product details and travel rules before buying, and treat crash-test claims as applying only to the specific tested crate and anchoring configuration.

The 10 best dog crates
1. MidWest LifeStages Double-Door Folding Crate: best budget crate for many puppies
The MidWest LifeStages is a practical starting point for many households. It comes in six sizes, from 22 to 48 inches, and includes a divider panel, removable leak-proof pan, two doors, rubber feet, and a folding frame.
The divider lets you reduce the available sleeping area while a puppy is small, then expand it as the dog grows. Choose a crate that fits the dog’s expected adult size and position the divider to provide comfortable space as the puppy grows. An oversized open space can let a puppy use one end as a bathroom and retreat to the other.

- WE DON'T CUT CORNERS, WE PERFECT THEM: Precision welding, rounded corner clips & slide-bolt latch with Paw Block mitigate snags, cuts & escapes. With rigorous safety testing, iCrate provides peace of mind knowing your dog is safe while you're away.
- DURABLE CONSTRUCTION: Sturdy metal wire design with a protective black e-coat finish, the iCrate resists rust and everyday wear. Complete with leak-proof tray, rubber feet, carry handle, and tool-free assembly, it's ready for years of use.
- SUPPORTS CRATE TRAINING: A divider panel lets the crate grow with your dog, from puppy kennel to full-size crate. Large openings and low thresholds ease the crate training process and help your dog feel more at home.
- LIFE GOES BETTER WITH PETS: A family-owned business based in Indiana, MidWest Homes for Pets brings over 100 years of pet product expertise and a commitment to quality, rigorous safety testing, and excellent US-based customer service.
The slide-bolt latch includes a Paw Block intended to make it harder for a dog to nose the door open. It is a useful feature, not an escape-proof guarantee. Check the latch, welds, corners, and pan after any attempt to force the door.
Choose it if: you want an affordable crate for training, sleeping, and ordinary home use.
2. MidWest Ultima Pro Double-Door Crate: best heavier-duty wire crate
The Ultima Pro is a separate model from the standard LifeStages line and is the better MidWest choice when you want a more robust wire crate. It suits owners who prefer wire visibility and airflow but want a sturdier option than a basic folding crate.
Wire crates are easy to inspect, clean, fold, and cover partially for a quieter resting space. They also have predictable failure points: latches can be manipulated, wire can bend, and paws or mouths can become caught in damaged sections. A dog that repeatedly attacks a wire door needs a different containment strategy rather than simply a stronger-looking latch.
MidWest’s instructions warn owners to remove collars, tags, and leads before crating because they can create an entanglement hazard.
Choose it if: you want a sturdier wire crate for home use and your dog is not a persistent wire bender or latch manipulator.
3. Diggs Revol Collapsible Dog Crate: best premium home crate
The Diggs Revol is aimed at owners who want a crate that looks and functions more like permanent home furniture. It has a ceiling hatch, garage-style door, and wheels, and it collapses for storage rather than requiring complete disassembly.
The available sizes are Small, Medium, Intermediate, and Large. The Large model has a 42.5-by-28-by-30-inch interior, weighs 53 pounds, and collapses to 48 by 31 by 13 inches. Compare interior dimensions with your dog’s measurements rather than relying only on the manufacturer’s size name.

A premium frame does not eliminate the need to assess ventilation, door security, cleaning, and behavior. Measure doorways and the intended floor space before ordering the largest version.
Choose it if: the crate will remain visible in your home and you value collapsibility, access, and finish over the lowest price.

4. Gunner G1 Kennel: best for car travel
The Gunner G1 is a vehicle-focused choice. The Small, Medium, and Intermediate models are listed as 5-Star crash-tested by the Center for Pet Safety (CPS). Gunner specifies strength-rated tie-downs and recommends anchoring the kennel through its tie-down pins.
A crash-test result applies to the tested crate size and anchoring configuration; it does not mean every setup, vehicle position, strap, or size will perform identically. CPS’s crate testing concerns hard-sided crates anchored in the vehicle’s cargo area. A heavy kennel placed loose in a trunk is not equivalent to a correctly secured one.
The Large model weighs 72 pounds empty, so two-person handling may be necessary even before adding a large dog. Confirm that the kennel fits the cargo area and that your vehicle’s tie-down points can be used as specified.
Choose it if: your priority is a hard-sided vehicle kennel with a documented CPS test listing for the relevant models.
5. Impact High Anxiety Crate: best for escape-prone dogs
The Impact High Anxiety Crate is built for dogs that damage ordinary crates or repeatedly attempt to escape. Current Impact documentation lists sizes from Medium through 2XL, with dimensions ranging from 30.5 by 20.5 by 26 inches to 48.5 by 27 by 33.5 inches.
Its reinforced construction makes it a more sensible starting point than a lightweight wire or fabric crate for a determined dog. Still, no crate should be described as universally escape-proof or indestructible. The dog’s size, bite strength, anxiety level, previous escape behavior, and acclimation all affect the result.
Impact states that the High Anxiety model is not airline-compliant. Do not assume that its construction makes it suitable for aircraft travel; Impact’s collapsible crate is a different product.
Choose it if: your dog has already bent wire, defeated latches, or damaged weaker crates, and the kennel will be used at home or for appropriate ground transport.
6. EliteField 3-Door Soft-Sided Crate: best portable soft crate
The EliteField 3-Door is a convenient type of crate for indoor travel, hotel stays, visiting family, and overnight trips. Multiple doors make placement easier, while fabric construction reduces weight and bulk compared with a steel or molded-plastic kennel.
This convenience comes with a strict behavioral requirement: the dog should already be comfortable and reliable in a crate. Mesh, seams, zippers, and fabric corners are vulnerable to chewing and clawing. A dog that panics when confined can destroy a soft crate quickly or injure its mouth and paws while trying to escape.

Use it indoors or during ordinary travel only after checking that the frame is stable, the zippers close fully, and the dog settles rather than attacks the sides. It is not a substitute for a reinforced crate or a crash-protection system.
Choose it if: you need a light, portable crate for a crate-trained dog that does not chew or claw at fabric.
7. Pet Gear “The Other Door” Steel Crate: best for multiple-entry access
Reviewed identifies Pet Gear’s “The Other Door” as an overall option for dogs that benefit from easier entry and exit, thanks to its multiple access points.
Additional doors can help in a tight room, beside furniture, or when a dog resists being guided through a single front opening. They also add hinges, latches, and seams to inspect. Verify the currently sold door layout and dimensions before buying because retailer listings and configurations can change.
As with other steel crates, assess the latch from the dog’s perspective. A dog that paws or noses at every opening may need more secure containment than a standard multi-door design provides.
Choose it if: room layout, mobility limitations, or a nervous dog makes front-only access inconvenient.
8. Petmate Sky Kennel: best airline-style hard kennel
The Petmate Sky Kennel is a hard-sided option for ground travel and airline-style kennel requirements. Its molded construction is more resistant to chewing than fabric, and the enclosed sides can offer a more sheltered environment than an open wire crate.
Do not call it universally “airline-approved.” Airline rules depend on the operating carrier, aircraft, route, cabin or cargo arrangement, kennel dimensions, ventilation, and current requirements. Delta’s guidance says cabin pets must fit comfortably in a kennel that fits beneath the seat. Its general guidance cites a soft kennel no larger than 18 by 11 by 11 inches for most aircraft, but under-seat space varies.

9. Fable Pets Crate: best furniture-style crate
The Fable Pets Crate is designed for homes where a conventional wire kennel would be visually intrusive. Its furniture-style appearance can make it easier to keep the crate in a living room, office, or bedroom.
Appearance should be the last step in the decision, not the first. Check that the interior gives the dog room to stand, turn around, lie down naturally, and change position. Also examine ventilation, door security, chew resistance, cleaning access, and whether the finish can tolerate the dog’s nails and normal use.
A dog that chews furniture or panics when confined may be a poor match for a decorative crate. Introduce it gradually with treats, an open door, and voluntary use rather than relying on the furniture design to make confinement comfortable.
Choose it if: your dog is a settled crate user and you want the crate to function as part of the room’s furniture.
10. Frisco Fold & Carry Wire Crate: best lower-cost alternative
Chewy lists Frisco Fold & Carry models among its leading crates based on customer ratings, review volume, and product attributes. This supports including it in a buying comparison, but not a claim of independent hands-on testing.
Customer ratings are not standardized durability, safety, or crash tests. Treat them as evidence of customer experience rather than proof that the crate will withstand a particular dog. Inspect the folding joints, door alignment, latch, welds, and pan as soon as it arrives.

Its appeal is straightforward: a folding wire format, familiar ventilation, and a lower entry price. It is best suited to ordinary home use, especially when the dog is learning calm crate behavior.
Choose it if: you need a basic foldable wire crate and want to spend less than you would on a premium model.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose the right crate size
Measure the dog rather than choosing by breed label alone. The dog should be able to stand without crouching, turn around without squeezing, lie down naturally, and change position. Interior dimensions matter more than exterior measurements, particularly when thick walls or a molded shell reduce usable space.
For a puppy, select a crate that will fit the adult dog and use a divider to limit the initial space. Move the divider as the puppy grows. A divider helps manage the interior; it does not make an unsuitable adult-size crate safe or comfortable.

Safety checks before regular use
- Inspect the door: Test the latch with one hand, then check whether your dog can nose or paw it open.
- Look for entanglement hazards: Remove collars, tags, and leads before crating unless a qualified professional has given different instructions for a specific situation.
- Check for damage: Examine welds, mesh, hinges, seams, corners, and the tray after every escape attempt.
- Secure vehicle crates: A heavy kennel is not automatically crash-safe. Anchor it in the cargo area using the manufacturer’s specified connectors or strength-rated straps.
- Introduce it gradually: Offer treats near and inside the crate, leave the door open initially, and increase closed-door time only while the dog remains settled.
- Monitor heat and airflow: Covering part of a crate can reduce visual stimulation, but never block ventilation or leave the dog in a hot vehicle.
What “tested” and “crash-tested” should mean
A genuine hands-on crate test should identify the tester, the dog’s size and temperament, how long the crate was used, and the criteria assessed. Those criteria can include setup, latch operation, cleaning, ventilation, dog fit, portability, durability, and behavior during acclimation. This article does not claim that its author conducted those tests on every product listed.
“Crash-tested” is narrower. It should identify the organization, crate size, anchoring method, and test configuration. CPS’s published crate testing is for hard-sided crates anchored in a vehicle’s cargo area. It is not a guarantee of protection in every vehicle, crash, or installation.
Do not treat retailer star ratings, popularity, or a manufacturer’s unspecific safety language as equivalent to independent certification. Check the current CPS certified-products list when a CPS certification claim is central to your decision.

What is the best dog crate for most puppies?
The MidWest LifeStages Double-Door Folding Crate is a practical choice for many puppies because it includes a divider, removable pan, two doors, and six size options. Use the divider as the puppy grows, and choose the adult size based on the dog’s measurements.
What is the safest dog crate for car travel?
The Gunner G1 is the vehicle-focused option in this comparison. Its Small, Medium, and Intermediate models are listed as 5-Star crash-tested by the Center for Pet Safety. It must still be installed with the specified anchoring system, and the test result should not be generalized to every size or vehicle setup.
Are soft-sided dog crates safe?
They can suit calm, reliably crate-trained dogs during ordinary indoor travel. They are poor choices for chewers, clawers, or dogs that panic when confined because mesh, zippers, and fabric seams can fail.
How much bigger should a dog crate be?
The crate should allow the dog to stand, turn around, lie down naturally, and change position without pressing against the walls. For puppies, use an adult-size crate with a divider rather than leaving the entire interior open from the start.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallThe Bottom Line
For puppy training and ordinary home use, consider the MidWest LifeStages. Choose the MidWest Ultima Pro for a sturdier wire format, the Gunner G1 for properly anchored vehicle travel, and the Impact High Anxiety Crate for a dog that has defeated lighter crates. The EliteField is convenient for calm, crate-trained travelers, while the Diggs Revol and Fable suit owners who want a more polished home setup.
Whichever model you buy, fit matters more than breed labels, a divider does not replace training, and no “crash-tested,” “airline-style,” or “heavy-duty” label removes the need to verify the exact use case.
