12 Curious Narwhal Facts: The Truth About the Arctic “Unicorn”

The narwhal’s famous tusk is an enlarged tooth—but its Arctic life holds plenty more surprises, from deep dives to wintering beneath sea ice.

Narwhals are Arctic whales, not sea unicorns: the long spiral-looking tusk is an enlarged tooth. Their lives are just as remarkable as that feature, shaped by seasonal migrations, deep dives and months spent around sea ice. Here are 12 curious facts about how narwhals look, live and cope with a changing Arctic.

What makes a narwhal’s tusk unusual?

1. The “horn” is actually a tooth

A narwhal is a toothed whale, and its famous tusk is an enlarged tooth that grows from the upper left jaw. NOAA Ocean Exploration explains that male narwhals have “a single long, straight tooth (or tusk) that protrudes two to three meters out of the upper left jaw” (NOAA Ocean Exploration’s narwhal explainer). The tusk can look like a horn, but it is part of the animal’s dentition.

2. Scientists are still studying what the tusk does

The tusk’s function is not settled. NOAA Fisheries describes social signaling as a leading proposed role, while sensory and prey-related functions have also been suggested (NOAA Fisheries’ narwhal profile). It is not established simply as a weapon or a proven hunting tool.

3. Some narwhals break the tusk stereotype

Tusks are most often found in males, but they are not exclusive to them: females with tusks have been documented. Some males have no tusk, and rare individuals have two (NOAA Fisheries; WWF’s narwhal facts).

How are narwhals adapted to Arctic life?

4. They are Arctic specialists

Narwhals live in Arctic waters, especially in the Atlantic sector. Their movements shift with the seasons: NOAA describes them migrating from pack ice in winter toward inshore waters in spring, coastal waters in summer and open waters in fall (NOAA Fisheries). This pattern connects their lives to the changing distribution of sea ice.

5. They can spend months beneath sea ice

WWF says many narwhals winter for as long as five months beneath sea ice in the Baffin Bay–Davis Strait region. Cracks in the ice give them access to air (WWF’s narwhal facts). This describes many animals in that region, not a universal schedule for every narwhal population.

6. Their dives can reach remarkable depths

NOAA Fisheries reports narwhal dives as deep as 3,937 feet and as long as 25 minutes (NOAA Fisheries). These are reported capability limits, not a description of a typical dive. Narwhals feed below the surface, so diving is part of how they use their Arctic habitat.

7. Their menu includes fish, squid and shrimp

NOAA lists Arctic cod, polar cod, turbot, squid and shrimp among narwhal prey; WWF also names Greenland halibut (NOAA Fisheries; WWF’s narwhal facts). Their diet is made up of Arctic marine prey, not just one signature food.

What do narwhals look like and how do they live?

8. Small pods can gather into enormous groups

A typical narwhal pod contains two to ten animals, according to NOAA Fisheries. The whales may also form much larger, dispersed aggregations numbering in the hundreds or thousands (NOAA Fisheries). A large gathering is therefore different from the smaller pod size often used to describe their usual social groups.

9. Their coloring changes with age

Young narwhals are brownish-gray. As they mature, they darken and become mottled; adults lighten again while retaining darker mottling, NOAA says (NOAA Fisheries). A whale’s coloring can therefore offer clues to its age.

10. Calves follow a long pregnancy

What pressures do narwhals face?

12. Their habitat is affected by environmental and human pressures

NOAA lists climate change, hunting, sea-ice loss, ice entrapment and contaminants among concerns for narwhals. WWF also identifies shipping and underwater noise as pressures (NOAA Fisheries; WWF’s narwhal facts). These are documented concerns, not a population trend or a quantified risk estimate.
