The twelve English-associated breeds below became notable through very different paths: some flushed birds, hunted foxes, tracked scent or controlled rats, while others moved from aristocratic households or farm work into companion life. Their histories come from the Daily Paws roundup by Maddie Topliff (January 21, 2022); they are historical context, not substitutes for current breed standards or veterinary advice.
What counts as an English dog breed?
England’s dog heritage is unusually broad. The list includes spaniels bred to find birds in cover, terriers developed for vermin control, hounds selected for scent and stamina, a sheepdog associated with cattle work, and toy-sized companions whose courtly connections made them fashionable. “English” can describe a breed’s place of development, its historical working culture, or its association with English people and institutions; it does not mean every breed originated within precisely the same modern borders.

The twelve breeds in this guide are drawn from Daily Paws’ “12 Posh English Dog Breeds From Across the Pond,” published January 21, 2022. The article is a descriptive roundup, so dates and historical details below should be read as that source’s account rather than as a current kennel-club standard.

Spaniels and courtly companions
English Cocker Spaniel
The English Cocker Spaniel’s historical job was practical: “cocking spaniels” accompanied hunters and flushed woodcock from cover so the birds could be taken. The Daily Paws account says the American Kennel Club recognized the Cocker Spaniel and the English Cocker as separate breeds in 1946, an institutional distinction that reflects how two related lines came to be defined on opposite sides of the Atlantic.

Mari-Beth O’Neill, identified in the article as the American Kennel Club’s vice president of Sport Services and an experienced breeder of Manchester Terriers and English Cocker Spaniels, describes English Cockers as one of England’s most popular breeds. Her concise description of their social orientation is: “They just want to be with you—they want to be with their person.” That is a quoted observation from the Daily Paws article, not a guarantee that every individual will have the same temperament.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is presented through its connection with European nobility and royalty from the Renaissance onward. The article associates King Charles II of England with breeding spaniels and links the breed’s four color patterns to noble families. Those associations explain the “posh” image: the breed’s story is as much about portraits, courts and fashionable households as it is about field work.
Historical prestige should not be confused with a formal ranking of quality. A modern dog’s behavior, structure and health depend on its breeding and individual circumstances, while the courtly imagery explains why this spaniel became a familiar symbol of English elegance.
Terriers: small dogs with working origins
Norwich Terrier
The Norwich Terrier began as a small ratter, valued for going after vermin. By the late 1800s it had become especially popular among Cambridge University undergraduates, giving it a distinctive student-culture association in addition to its working identity. The source says Norwich Terriers reached the United States in the 1910s.
The Norfolk Terrier is described as a closely similar variety that the AKC recognized separately in the 1970s. That split is useful context when older photographs or accounts seem to use the two names interchangeably: the relationship is historical, but the modern breed names are distinct.

Staffordshire Bull Terrier
The Staffordshire Bull Terrier’s history is difficult because it passes through the era of underground dog fighting. The Daily Paws article describes the breed as a Bulldog–Terrier cross that emerged after blood sports were banned, when enthusiasts continued those contests illegally. That origin is a historical account, not a description of the character or conduct of every modern Staffordshire Bull Terrier.
The article also distinguishes a taller, heavier American line that developed into the American Staffordshire Terrier. Keeping the two histories separate prevents a common error: treating related names as if they represented one unchanged breed on both sides of the Atlantic.
Manchester Terrier
The Standard Manchester Terrier is described as a small-game hunter and ratter. Its usefulness came from willingness to pursue quarry and work around people, rather than from size or ornamental appearance. O’Neill calls the breed active and ready to participate in different activities with its people. That quotation conveys an engaging working temperament, but it is an attributed breeder’s description rather than a universal behavioral test.
O’Neill also states, “Almost every terrier breed originated in England with the exception of the miniature schnauzer.” The Daily Paws article presents this as her observation; it should not be treated as a comprehensive historical census of every terrier breed.
Yorkshire Terrier
The Yorkshire Terrier developed in Yorkshire and Lancashire during the mid-1800s. The article describes a later transition from regional working roots to fashionable companion status, a pattern that helps explain why a tiny dog can have both a terrier’s historical identity and a lapdog’s public image.

The source records that the first Yorkie recorded by the AKC in the United States, in 1885, was named Belle. That single registration detail anchors the breed’s early American record without implying that Belle represented every Yorkie of the period.
Spaniels and dogs built to find birds
English Springer Spaniel
The English Springer Spaniel was developed to flush birds from cover such as brush or tall grass. “Springing” game into the open allowed a hunter to take a shot, so the dog’s contribution was movement, nose work and persistence rather than retrieving alone.
The Daily Paws account adds that the breed’s endurance and sense of smell have led to use in detection work. That is a historical and occupational observation; it does not establish a particular dog’s aptitude for service work or predict the training outcome of an individual animal.
English Setter
The English Setter’s name preserves an older hunting technique. The source says these dogs located game birds and then “set,” or lay down, so hunters using nets could approach without startling the birds. After firearms changed hunting practice, the preferred posture shifted toward an upright point.
The breed reached the United States in the 19th century, according to the article. Its history therefore records two changes at once: a change in equipment, from nets to guns, and the spread of an English working type across the Atlantic.

Hounds: scent, speed and endurance
English Foxhound
The English Foxhound is tied to organized fox hunting in Britain. Selective breeding emphasized scent, endurance, speed and agility—four abilities that had to work together over a long pursuit. The article contrasts it with the American Foxhound, saying George Washington helped develop the American form and describing that line as taller and slimmer.
This is a useful example of how a shared hunting purpose can produce related but separately described national types. “English” in this context points to the British development of the foxhound tradition, not to a claim that all foxhounds look or work identically.
Bloodhound
Bloodhounds are presented as scent trackers whose modern form was perfected in Western Europe roughly 1,000 years ago, with older ties to Mediterranean dogs. Their reputation rests on following a scent trail rather than on speed alone.
The article explains the name “bloodhound” as deriving from “blooded hounds,” meaning hounds of aristocratic or noble breeding. That etymology is the source’s account and is best treated as a historical explanation rather than settled linguistic fact. The important working distinction is clearer: the breed’s identity has long been connected with extraordinarily deliberate scent tracking.

Livestock work and a famous musical namesake
Old English Sheepdog
The Old English Sheepdog appeared, according to the source, in the late 1700s. The article describes ancestry from Scotland and Russia and says the breed was employed primarily with cattle, placing it in the world of droving and farm transport rather than only sheep management.

Its cultural afterlife is unusually recognizable. Paul McCartney’s dog Martha is associated with the breed, and the Beatles song “Martha My Dear” is linked to her. That story explains a pop-culture connection; it does not replace the breed’s livestock-working history.
Bulldogs and the shift from blood sports to companionship
English Bulldog
The Daily Paws article traces the English Bulldog to 13th-century England and says it was originally used in dog fighting. After animal blood sports were prohibited in England, breeders reshaped the dog toward companion life. The source says the American Kennel Club recognized the breed in 1886.
That timeline matters because it separates origin from later purpose. A breed can carry a historical name and silhouette while its socially accepted role changes substantially. The fighting-era account should never be used to assume that an individual modern dog is dangerous; present-day behavior depends on breeding, socialization, management and the individual animal.
How to use this list responsibly
Separate history from a buying decision
This roundup answers “What are some English dog breeds?” and “What were they originally bred to do?” It does not provide current exercise requirements, grooming schedules, health-screening recommendations or household-suitability rankings for all twelve breeds. Those decisions require up-to-date breed-club standards and veterinary guidance for the specific dog, age and home.
Notice the working pattern
Several entries began with a job: Cockers and Springers flushed birds; Setters located and indicated game; Foxhounds pursued scent trails; Bloodhounds tracked scent; Norwich and Manchester Terriers controlled vermin; and the Old English Sheepdog worked with cattle. The Bulldog and Staffordshire Bull Terrier histories show how a dog’s role can change when laws and social expectations change, while the Cavalier and Yorkshire Terrier illustrate movement toward fashionable companionship.
Use “posh” as a cultural shorthand
The word captures courtly associations, polished public images and famous owners, but it says nothing precise about pedigree quality, temperament or care needs. For a current ownership decision, verify the relevant breed standard, meet adult dogs from responsible breeders or shelters, and ask a veterinarian about health and welfare rather than relying on historical glamour.
Together, these twelve breeds show why English dog history cannot be reduced to one look or one lifestyle. Their common thread is a long relationship with people—through sport, farm work, vermin control, scent work, royalty or companionship—and the way those relationships continue to shape how the breeds are understood.
