The 12 fluffiest dog breeds are an editorial selection, not an official ranking: no accepted test measures canine “fluffiness.” These breeds stand out for abundant, long, curly, shaggy, or double-layered coats, but their care requirements and temperaments differ dramatically.

The practical question is not only which dogs have fluffy coats. It is whether you can provide the brushing, bathing, professional grooming, exercise, training, and living arrangement each breed needs.

What “fluffy” means in this list

The American Kennel Club’s fluffy-breed features supply ten candidates—Standard Poodle, Old English Sheepdog, Keeshond, Collie, Bichon Frise, Chow Chow, Samoyed, Pomeranian, Siberian Husky, and American Eskimo Dog. Two more, Great Pyrenees and Tibetan Mastiff, appear in the AKC’s separate six-breed roundup. Together they form a useful, source-backed set of 12, rather than a measured top twelve. See the AKC selections at 10 Fluffy Dog Breeds and The 6 Fluffiest Dog Breeds.

“Fluffy” describes appearance. It does not mean a breed sheds little, feels soft all over, is easy to groom, or suits every family. A curly coat, a long outer coat, and a dense undercoat create very different ownership experiences.

The 12 fluffiest dog breeds at a glance

Breed What creates the fluffy look Care signal from the AKC guidance
Standard Poodle Dense, curly coat Daily brushing; many owners book grooming every four to six weeks
Old English Sheepdog Long, shaggy double coat Brush down to the skin at least weekly; multiple grooming sessions per month may be needed
Keeshond Thick stand-off coat and prominent neck ruff Weekly brushing, plus regular bathing and blow-drying
Rough Collie Long outer coat and fuller undercoat Weekly brushing; pay special attention behind the ears and in the undercoat
Bichon Frise Curled, cottony coat Regular undercoat brushing to prevent mats; infrequent shedding does not mean no grooming
Chow Chow Lion-like mane; rough or smooth coat varieties Regular grooming, with eye and ear care
Samoyed Long outer hair over a woolly undercoat Daily brushing and preparation for ongoing shedding
Pomeranian Small double coat with a pronounced chest frill Regular brushing with a pin brush
Siberian Husky Protective topcoat over a dense undercoat Weekly brushing, with heavier seasonal shedding
American Eskimo Dog White double coat and mane-like ruff Frequent brushing; avoid overly frequent bathing
Great Pyrenees Large, weather-resistant double coat Weekly brushing, increasing it during seasonal shedding
Tibetan Mastiff Immense double coat Protective, independent guardian type; the coat demands serious routine care

Breed-by-breed guide

1. Standard Poodle

The Standard Poodle’s dense curls give it a plush, cloud-like outline. Its low-shedding coat can still mat tightly, so “less hair on the floor” should never be mistaken for low maintenance. The AKC recommends daily brushing and notes that many owners use a professional groomer every four to six weeks. That recurring appointment is part of responsible ownership, not an optional beauty treatment.

Choose this coat if you are willing to learn line-brushing techniques, keep a consistent schedule, and budget for clipping. The curl also makes it important to check the skin rather than judging the coat’s surface: mats can conceal moisture, debris, or irritation.

2. Old English Sheepdog

The Old English Sheepdog is the archetypal shaggy dog, with a long double-coated appearance that can obscure the dog’s outline. AKC guidance says grooming needs to reach down to the skin and recommends at least weekly brushing; some owners may need several grooming sessions each month. A quick pass over the top layer will not remove packed undercoat or find tangles close to the body.

This is a commitment in time and handling. Introduce brushing, feet handling, ear checks, bathing, and drying while the dog is young. If you cannot maintain the coat yourself, professional grooming is a realistic part of the care plan.

3. Keeshond

A Keeshond’s thick stand-off coat and dramatic neck ruff create a rounded, foxlike silhouette. The AKC fluffy-breed guide recommends weekly brushing and regular bathing followed by thorough blow-drying. Drying matters because a dense coat can stay damp close to the skin long after the surface feels dry.

During a brushing session, work through the ruff, rear furnishings, and other areas where friction creates knots. A Keeshond is a good example of why a glamorous outline represents an ongoing maintenance routine rather than a one-time grooming project.

4. Rough Collie

The rough Collie has a long coat with a fuller undercoat; it is distinct from the smooth Collie, whose coat is short. Weekly brushing is the AKC recommendation for the rough variety. Concentrate on the undercoat and on friction zones behind the ears, where mats can form before they are visible from a distance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate small sections and brush methodically instead of dragging a tool across the entire coat. If a tangle will not yield gently, stop and seek a groomer rather than pulling at the skin.

5. Bichon Frise

The Bichon Frise’s curled, cottony coat produces a soft, rounded look, and it sheds infrequently compared with many heavily coated breeds. Its undercoat still needs regular brushing: loose hair can remain trapped and felt into mats. “Infrequent shedding” is not a guarantee of a hypoallergenic dog, and no breed can promise that every allergy sufferer will react comfortably.

Families considering a Bichon should plan for routine coat work and professional trimming. The small size of the dog does not make a neglected mat easier to remove; it can make close, careful handling even more important.

6. Chow Chow

The Chow Chow’s lion-like mane is available in rough and smooth coat varieties, with the rough coat delivering the most conspicuous fluff. The AKC includes regular grooming and dedicated eye and ear care in its guidance. Those checks should be part of the normal routine, not reserved for visible problems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The coat is only one part of the decision. A Chow Chow’s maintenance plan should include teaching calm cooperation for brushing around the head, neck, eyes, and ears, where resistance can turn a simple session into a struggle.

7. Samoyed

The Samoyed combines long outer hair with a woolly undercoat in a dense, weather-protective coat. The AKC breed guidance calls for daily brushing and notes ongoing shedding. That combination makes the Samoyed one of the most demanding choices on this list for anyone trying to keep loose hair under control.

Daily brushing is easier when divided into manageable sections and started before the coat becomes packed. Expect seasonal changes in the amount of loose undercoat and plan for extra time rather than treating shedding as an occasional surprise.

8. Pomeranian

The Pomeranian is a small dog with a fluffy double coat and a pronounced chest frill, so a modest body can carry a surprisingly abundant outline. The AKC recommends regular brushing with a pin brush. Work gently through the frill, behind the ears, and around the hindquarters, where friction and fine hair encourage tangles.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Small does not mean maintenance-free. A Pomeranian’s compact size may shorten each session, but the sessions still need to happen consistently.

9. Siberian Husky

The Siberian Husky has a protective outer layer over an insulating undercoat. The AKC fluffy-breed article recommends weekly brushing and highlights seasonal shedding. A Husky’s coat is built for weather, so removing loose undercoat is a routine task rather than a way to make the dog permanently shed-free.

Consider your tolerance for seasonal hair, your storage for grooming tools, and your ability to provide the exercise and training a working sled-dog type requires. A beautiful coat does not replace those daily needs.

10. American Eskimo Dog

The American Eskimo Dog’s white double coat and mane-like ruff create a particularly bright, voluminous appearance. The AKC recommends frequent brushing to manage shedding and cautions against overly frequent bathing. Excessive bathing can strip the coat’s natural condition and create more work without solving the underlying shedding cycle.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use brushing to remove loose undercoat and inspect the skin, then bathe when the dog is genuinely dirty or when your veterinarian or groomer advises it. Keep the white coat clean with sensible routine care rather than repeated harsh washing.

11. Great Pyrenees

The Great Pyrenees is a large working guardian with a dense, weather-resistant double coat. AKC guidance recommends weekly brushing and more frequent sessions during seasonal shedding. Its independent, strong-willed guardian temperament is as consequential as its size and coat.

This breed needs an owner prepared for a substantial dog that may make its own decisions. Do not choose a Great Pyrenees solely because its coat photographs beautifully; evaluate space, training expectations, handling ability, and your comfort living with an independent guardian.

12. Tibetan Mastiff

The Tibetan Mastiff is described by the AKC’s fluffy-breed roundup as having an immense double coat and a protective, independent guardian temperament. That combination signals a serious commitment in both management and training.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its coat volume can make brushing physically demanding, while its guardian nature calls for thoughtful socialization and boundaries. Prospective owners should seek breed-specific guidance from veterinarians, trainers, and experienced breeders before assuming that a giant fluffy dog will fit an ordinary household routine.

How to choose among fluffy dog breeds

Use the coat as the starting point, not the deciding factor. Compare candidates against four practical questions:

  • How much hair and brushing can you handle? Daily brushing is a different lifestyle from weekly brushing, and seasonal shedding can temporarily increase either workload.
  • Will you pay for professional grooming? Standard Poodles, Old English Sheepdogs, and other long or curly coats may require regular appointments in addition to home care.
  • What temperament and activity level fit your home? Great Pyrenees and Tibetan Mastiffs are independent guardians; a fluffy appearance does not predict an easygoing companion.
  • Can you maintain the routine year-round? Coat care includes brushing, bathing when appropriate, drying, checking ears and eyes where relevant, and addressing mats before they become painful.

Ask a breeder or rescue organization to demonstrate the adult coat, not just show photographs of puppies. Puppy coats can look deceptively simple before the mature undercoat and furnishings arrive. Also ask what tools, appointment frequency, and handling practice the adult dog has required.

How double coats work

A double coat has a coarser outer topcoat and a softer, dense undercoat. The outer layer helps repel dirt and water; the undercoat insulates and contributes to temperature regulation. Coat density, length, curl, and shedding cycles vary by breed, which is why one universal grooming schedule fails.

The AKC explains that many double-coated dogs benefit from at least weekly brushing, while heavier coats may need more frequent care during shedding periods. A slick surface can hide loose undercoat underneath, so brush in sections and check that your tool is reaching the skin without scraping it.

Tools and a safe brushing routine

Match the tool to the job rather than buying the stiffest brush available:

  • Grooming rake or quality steel comb: useful for loosening and lifting undercoat.
  • Slicker brush: helpful in denser areas when used gently and methodically.
  • Wide-tooth steel comb: suited to working through tangles without forcing a narrow tool through the coat.

The AKC advises choosing tools that fit comfortably and avoiding combs with bent teeth that can snag or damage hair. Start with a calm, dry dog; separate the coat into small sections; brush from the skin outward; and stop when the dog is uncomfortable. A mat that cannot be opened gently should be handled by a professional rather than cut blindly against the skin.

Why shaving a double-coated dog is usually discouraged

Grooming professionals generally advise against shaving a double coat. The layers may regrow at different rates, and shaving can affect the coat’s function, temperature regulation, and skin protection. Removing the outer layer also does not turn a weather-adapted coat into a reliable cooling system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

As Teri Becker DiMarino, president of the California Professional Pet Groomers Association, puts it in the AKC grooming guidance: “Shaving doesn’t do anything to cool dogs off because a dog’s cooling system is different than ours,” the AKC explains. Exceptions can exist for medical treatment or severe, welfare-threatening matting; those decisions belong with a veterinarian or qualified groomer.

A realistic care plan before you commit

  1. Record the recurring work. Put weekly or daily brushing on your calendar, along with bathing, drying, nail care, and coat checks.
  2. Price professional help locally. Ask groomers what they charge for the adult size and coat, how often they recommend appointments, and whether they accept a dog that needs desensitization.
  3. Practice handling early. Reward calm contact with paws, ears, eyes, tail, ruff, and belly before introducing longer sessions.
  4. Plan for shedding seasons. Keep washable covers, a safe storage place for tools, and enough time for extra brushing when the undercoat releases.
  5. Build in veterinary support. Persistent itching, odor, redness, painful mats, or sudden coat changes need professional evaluation rather than a change of brush alone.

The fluffiest dog is therefore not a universal winner. A Standard Poodle may suit someone who welcomes daily brushing and scheduled clipping; a Pomeranian may offer a smaller package with regular coat work; and a Great Pyrenees or Tibetan Mastiff demands readiness for an independent guardian as well as a powerful double coat. Choose the coat, care routine, and temperament together.
