Fluffy cats come in different coat lengths, textures, and layers—and they do not all need the same care. These 12 breeds are known for plush, long, curly, or shaggy coats, but there is no scientific ranking that establishes which is “fluffiest.” The Cat Fanciers’ Association offers a rough description: more than one inch of hair, in a 2024 coat-care article. That is not a formal measurement standard for comparing breeds.

What makes a cat look fluffy?

Coat length is only part of the picture. A cat can look especially full because its coat is layered, dense, curly, or longer around the neck, belly, tail, or paws. The Norwegian Forest Cat, for example, has a layered coat with a woolly undercoat and coarse guard hairs; the Siberian is described as having a thick triple coat. Other breeds, such as the Ragdoll, are longhaired but are described by the CFA as having primarily guard hairs and little significant undercoat.

These differences affect appearance and grooming. The CFA’s “more than one inch” description is a helpful rough rule of thumb, not a scientific cross-breed test. Breed profiles describe tendencies; an individual cat’s coat and care needs can vary.

How grooming needs differ

“Longhaired” does not mean that every cat needs the same routine. PetMD’s guide ranges from daily brushing for the Himalayan to weekly combing for the RagaMuffin and Japanese Bobtail. Ragdolls are generally combed once or twice a week, while the Norwegian Forest Cat and Maine Coon are brushed several times weekly. Seasonal shedding can change the routine: Siberians may need much more frequent brushing in spring and fall, and Norwegian Forest Cats need added attention during their twice-yearly shedding periods.

For long or dense coats, a wide-toothed metal comb can help separate mats and remove loose hair without pulling as strongly on healthy fur. The CFA discusses this type of comb in its coat-care guidance. Use a gentle touch and adjust the tool and schedule to the cat’s coat and tolerance; curly coats such as the Selkirk Rex’s can become frizzy if over-brushed.

Which fluffy cat needs the least grooming?

Among the breeds in this list, PetMD describes weekly combing as usually sufficient for the RagaMuffin and says weekly brushing helps manage the Japanese Bobtail’s silky coat. The CFA characterizes the Birman’s intermediate-length coat as easy to groom. These descriptions are useful starting points, not guarantees: mats, shedding, coat condition, and an individual cat’s tolerance can mean a different routine is needed.
