Cats vocalize to communicate, and the same sound can mean different things depending on the cat and the situation. Meows, yowls, chirps, growls, hisses, and spits are not a universal code—and a sound alone cannot diagnose a health problem. If your cat’s vocal pattern is new, persistent, or accompanied by other changes, contact a veterinarian before trying to suppress it.
What these seven cat sounds may mean
This is a practical grouping of familiar sounds, not an official or ranked list. Notice what happens before and after the sound, along with your cat’s posture and behavior.

1. Meowing
A meow may be a request for food, attention, or access to a room. Frequent or newly changed meowing can also accompany a health issue, so consider the broader pattern rather than assuming your cat is simply demanding something. VCA’s guide to feline vocalization describes common behavioral reasons for persistent crying.

A loud, drawn-out yowl may be associated with mating behavior, territorial triggers, insecurity, attention-seeking, pain or illness, or age-related cognitive changes. The sound by itself does not identify which cause applies. VCA’s caterwauling guidance discusses several possible causes.

- Catnip Inside: Packed with catnip for high energy excitement during self play, keeping them busy and engaged
- Swat-Activated: Emits a quick one-second squeak with each bat, swat, or pounce
- Easy to Carry: Lightweight and compact for carrying, chasing, and swatting; cats of all sizes and ages from kittens to adult and senior cats will enjoy it
- Soft Plush: Soft faux fur and a floppy tail ensure this toyresembles real mice prey; let the hunt begin
3. Chirping or trilling
Chirps and trills are often friendly communication, such as a greeting or a sound made while approaching food. They are not automatically a problem to correct. The ASPCA’s overview of common cat behavior notes that vocal signals should be considered in context.
4. Growling
Growling is a warning that your cat does not want interaction. Stop approaching or handling the cat; continuing to press may escalate the response. If growling when approached is new, pain is one possible explanation and warrants veterinary advice.
5. Hissing
Hissing is another warning to back away, sometimes directed at another animal. Give the cat room and avoid forcing contact. A hiss can signal fear or defensiveness; it does not, by itself, reveal why the cat feels threatened.

6. Spitting
Spitting can occur as a defensive escalation alongside hissing. Treat it as a clear request for space: do not corner, scold, or reach toward the cat.
7. Distressed or pain-associated vocalizing
There is no single sound that reliably identifies pain. A cat in pain may vocalize more than usual, growl, or hiss when approached. VCA’s list of possible pain signs includes increased meowing and growling or hissing when touched or approached. A change in sound should be assessed alongside behavior and health changes.
When should you contact a veterinarian?
Arrange veterinary advice for a new or persistent change in vocalization, especially if it comes with changes in activity, appetite or weight, grooming, mobility, aggression, or social behavior. Do not try to quiet a cat with possible pain or illness through punishment or enrichment alone.

- Contact your care team if your cat frequently meows at night, vocalizes in the litter box, or develops a changed or raspy voice.
- Note whether the cat is reluctant to move, grooming poorly, losing weight, unusually active, or reacting painfully when approached.
- Seek timely advice if the sound occurs alongside other worrying health changes; your veterinarian can assess the full pattern rather than relying on the sound alone.
These signs do not establish a diagnosis. A veterinarian can help determine whether a medical issue, environmental trigger, or learned behavior is involved.
How to figure out what is prompting the sound
Before changing your cat’s routine, look for the pattern and any consequence that may be maintaining it. For several episodes, record:
- When and where the sound happens, and what occurred just beforehand.
- Your cat’s posture, activity, and response to people or other animals.
- Whether eating, drinking, toileting, moving, grooming, or social behavior has changed.
- What happens immediately afterward—for example, whether the cat receives food, attention, or access to a room.
This record can help you spot an environmental trigger and give your veterinarian a clearer description if the change persists.

What can help, depending on the cause?
If your cat seems to need more activity or attention
Build a predictable routine that includes social play, exploration, climbing or perching, and food-based activity. A puzzle feeder or other manipulation-feeding toy is one optional way to occupy some cats; it is not a proven treatment for vocalization and will not suit every cat. Choose an activity appropriate to your cat’s feeding style and supervise when needed.
When a meow is a demand for attention, food, or play, consistently providing that reward in response can reinforce the pattern. Instead, notice and reward calm, quiet behavior. For nighttime vocalization, daytime activity and a consistent food-and-play routine may help when unmet activity is contributing, but they will not address every cause.
If something outside is triggering the noise
If your cat reacts to visible outdoor animals, temporarily limiting the view may reduce that particular trigger. Preserve suitable indoor stimulation so the cat still has ways to play, explore, and observe safely.

If a household change is unsettling your cat
For a new person or pet, provide reassurance and make introductions gradually rather than forcing interaction. Give your cat a safe place to retreat and time to adjust.
If mating behavior may be involved
Unspayed or unneutered cats may yowl in response to mating hormones. Ask a veterinarian whether spaying or neutering is appropriate and discuss timing for your cat.
If a health cause is possible
Prioritize veterinary advice rather than trying toys, reward changes, or trigger blocking as a substitute for assessment. Once medical concerns have been considered, a veterinarian can help guide any behavior changes that are appropriate.

Quick Recap
What not to do
- Do not hit, frighten, or otherwise physically punish a vocalizing cat. Punishment can increase fear and anxiety without addressing the cause.
- Do not keep approaching a cat that is growling, hissing, or spitting. Give it space and let it settle.
- Do not assume every loud sound is a behavioral problem or that a familiar sound rules out illness when its pattern has changed.
