A window catio is an enclosed extension that lets a cat reach fresh air, sunlight and outdoor views without roaming freely. The best design depends on your window’s opening, the wall structure, available footprint, weather exposure and how easily you can enter, clean and evacuate the enclosure. The twelve Instagram examples below—featured by Daily Paws on May 7, 2021—are visual inspiration, not tested products or universal construction plans.
Use them to decide what your cat needs most: a sunny bed, a high lookout, climbing levels, a sheltered den, toys or the smallest possible footprint. What makes a window catio different from a cat window perch?
A perch is usually a single platform attached to or near a window. A window catio is an enclosed, cat-accessible space connected to the home. It may be a shallow box, a tall multi-level structure, a bay-like room or a small solarium. Mesh or another appropriately secured barrier keeps the cat contained while the opening provides ventilation and a view.

A design that looks light in a photograph can still impose leverage and weight on a wall, window surround or bracket.

Novack’s scale advice is straightforward: “Build whatever you can afford to build with as much space as you can provide for them.” More area is useful only when the attachment, enclosure, escape prevention and maintenance plan are appropriate for the site.

A Room with a View
Percy and Fred’s enclosure in Maroubra, New South Wales, frames city and shore scenery. The useful takeaway is to design around the actual outlook rather than assuming any exterior-facing window will be stimulating. Check sightlines from a cat’s standing and lying positions, and consider whether nearby traffic, neighboring windows or reflective glass will make the location stressful.
Soaking Up the Rays
Maddie’s custom window box opens directly from a window and centers on a sunny lounging spot. A sun-first plan should include a shaded portion or an indoor retreat. Observe the window at different times of day; a pleasant morning patch can become excessively hot in the afternoon, particularly in a shallow enclosure.

Romeo, Oh Romeo
Jiji and Jude use a shallow, half-round solarium reached through a cat-door insert in the open window. Its compact profile suits a limited exterior footprint, but shallow depth leaves less room for a litter-free route, turning or multiple resting positions. Confirm that the insert closes securely and that the cat cannot push against the open sash or screen.

Aim High
This second-story enclosure uses a metal shed roof and brackets bolted to the house. Height can add a valuable lookout, yet it raises the consequences of a mounting mistake. Treat brackets, fasteners, wall condition and installer access as structural questions; do not assume the window frame itself can carry the enclosure.

Peppy’s sunlit window box is described by his person, Harshil Gupta, as “Peppy’s den.” This approach prioritizes a familiar, sheltered resting zone. Add a stable bed or platform, but leave enough clear floor for the cat to turn around and exit without squeezing past bulky furnishings.
Level Up
Elwing Works’ bay-like design has several levels and ramps; the article notes that a smaller version might be called a “catio-ette.” Vertical enrichment is useful when floor area is limited, provided every tier has a secure landing and a route back to the window. Ramps should not terminate at a drop or force a cat to leap onto an unstable shelf.
Greenhouse
Window Catio Creations’ colorful space for Max and Nala suggests a greenhouse-like room. Transparent or translucent surfaces can increase visual openness, but they also affect heat, glare and cleaning. Include ventilation appropriate to the enclosure and materials that tolerate outdoor moisture; never rely on a sealed, sun-heated box as the cat’s only option.

Toy Box
Hazey’s box includes toys, and the article notes that she also explores outdoors in a harness and on a leash. Toys can make a small catio more engaging, but dangling cords, loose parts and weather-damaged items create hazards. Use only secure, inspectable enrichment and remove anything a cat can chew apart.

Rowan’s perch emphasizes afternoon sun and people-watching from a downtown Cape Cod loft. A people-facing window may provide stimulation, but it can also expose a nervous cat to constant movement. Give the cat a way to retreat from the glass and consider whether evening lighting or privacy concerns affect the placement.

Frankie, Reese, Felvis and Bobby’s elevated enclosure feels surrounded by tree limbs and leaves. A leafy view can be enriching, but branches, falling debris and wildlife contact must remain outside the enclosure. Trim or redirect growth so it cannot compromise mesh, block the exit or give a cat a route over the barrier.

Window Box Catio With Climbing Shelves
This narrow, tall design fits between windows and uses multiple climbing tiers plus a wall-installed cat door for two cats. A vertical footprint saves exterior space, but two cats need enough passing and resting room to avoid one blocking the return route. Locate shelves so each level can be inspected and cleaned from a safe position.
Measure the site before choosing a shape
Webvet’s September 27, 2026 guide separates three measurements that are often confused: the usable window opening, the attachment area around the window and the actual interior cat space. Take all three before buying materials or selecting a kit.
- Window opening: record the clear width and height available for the cat’s route, not just the manufacturer’s nominal window size.
- Window type: vertically sliding, horizontally sliding and outward-opening casement windows require different connection details. A casement window may need a frame or insert that does not interfere with its hinges or emergency operation.
- Attachment area: identify solid wall material, trim, siding and the locations of studs. Do not count on the window frame alone to support an enclosure.
- Interior cat area: measure the usable floor, headroom, turning space and any shelf or ramp clearance after the barrier and entry hardware are installed.
- Access: confirm that you can clean, inspect and repair the enclosure without leaning out of a window.
For an upper-floor installation, safe access is a prerequisite, not a convenience. If the only way to reach the outside is to lean through or out of the window, choose another arrangement or hire a properly equipped installer.
Mounting and construction considerations
The British Columbia Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (BC SPCA) DIY plan says to measure the window and enclosure depth and locate a wall stud before construction. Its example attaches support brackets to a stud. The plan’s dimensions—3 feet, 5 feet and 4 feet 8 inches—are examples to modify for the individual space, not standard or universally safe dimensions.

The same plan lists 2×2 boards, 2×4 support-bracket boards, 5/8-inch plywood, 1×1 stainless-steel or galvanized wire mesh, 3½-inch deck screws, staples, drill bits, wire or tin snips, a saw, a drill and a staple gun. Those materials describe one DIY approach; your wall, climate and local code may require different fasteners or framing.
Untreated exposed plywood can break down or mold. The BC SPCA advises a pet-safe, water-based, low-VOC preservative free from heavy metals and warns against creosote. It also recommends a sloped roof for weatherproofing and notes that stucco and vinyl siding require extra steps. Follow the plan’s cautions, then adapt the details to the actual building rather than copying a photograph.
A practical planning sequence
- Define the cat’s priority. Choose one main purpose—sun, view, retreat, climbing or play—and one secondary purpose. This prevents a tiny window box from becoming overcrowded.
- Inspect the window. Identify its opening direction, locks, screens, sill condition and whether it must remain usable as an emergency exit.
- Map the wall. Locate studs or other suitable structural points and document siding, masonry, stucco or trim that will affect attachment.
- Draw the full route. Include the indoor opening, cat door or insert, every shelf and the return path. Mark where a cat could climb, squeeze, push or become trapped.
- Set the footprint. Compare the available depth and width with the cat’s turning and resting needs. A smaller but accessible enclosure is preferable to a larger one that cannot be inspected.
- Plan weather control. Provide a roof or cover, drainage, shade and ventilation suited to the site. Avoid heat buildup in clear or greenhouse-like designs.
- Select materials and fasteners. Use exterior-appropriate framing, securely attached mesh and finishes that are safe for animals after curing. Match fasteners to the wall substrate.
- Get permission and arrange safe installation. Renters and residents of shared buildings should obtain written approval and clarify responsibility for drilling, exterior appearance and removal.
- Test before opening access. Push and pull on the assembled frame, inspect every edge and fastener, and verify that doors, mesh and roof remain secure. Introduce the cat gradually while supervising.
How to choose among DIY, a kit and a custom build
DIY construction
DIY offers control over width, depth, shelves and finishes, and the BC SPCA plan provides a materials starting point. It also places responsibility for structural attachment, weatherproofing, mesh tension and safe installation on the builder. Use the plan as an example, not as a stamped design for every building.

A commercially made kit
A kit may simplify cutting and hardware selection, but fit is not automatic. Before ordering, compare the manufacturer’s current manual with your window type, attachment surface, cat-door route, cleaning access and local permission requirements. Webvet specifically advises checking exact, current instructions rather than relying on a listing photograph.
Custom fabrication
A custom builder can work around unusual windows, narrow spaces or multiple levels. The inspiration article names Elwing Works and Window Catio Creations as examples of the custom-design category, not as endorsements or guarantees of service, structural performance or availability. Ask any builder to explain attachment points, weather management, maintenance access and removal.
Safety and maintenance checklist
- Inspect mesh, staples, screws, hinges and roof edges regularly for looseness, corrosion or sharp points.
- Confirm that no gap allows a head, paw or collar to become caught.
- Keep the indoor connection usable so the cat can return without climbing an exposed route.
- Provide shade and a retreat from direct sun, especially in shallow or clear enclosures.
- Remove wet bedding, moldy wood, damaged toys, leaves and animal droppings promptly.
- Check after storms, strong winds, snow or contact with branches.
- Keep harnesses and leashes separate from the enclosure unless the cat is actively supervised; they are not substitutes for a secure barrier.
- Have a plan for bringing the cat inside quickly during a fire alarm, severe weather, wildlife encounter or medical emergency.
A window catio can offer fresh air, sunlight and bird-watching without exposing a cat to the broader dangers of free-roaming outdoors. Its success depends less on copying a cute image than on matching the enclosure to the building, the window and the individual cat.
