Cat enrichment is not just a collection of toys. It means giving a cat safe places to rest and hide, separated access to essential resources, chances to scratch, play and seek food, and control over when to interact or retreat. The 12 practices below are grounded in feline-care guidance; they are not a formally prescribed veterinary checklist.

What does a cat need to be happy indoors?

The AAFP and ISFM describe environmental needs that include safe places, separate resources, opportunities for play and predatory behavior, positive interaction with people, and attention to smell. The AAFP’s 2024 position statement also names food, water, safe resting places, simulated hunting and foraging, play, vertical territory, and clean toileting areas as essentials for indoor-only cats. Read the AAFP and ISFM Feline Environmental Needs Guidelines and the 2024 Indoor/Outdoor Lifestyle Position Statement.

In practice, enrichment is about access and choice as much as equipment. A simple box, an accessible shelf, or a play routine may be more useful than a new object a cat cannot or does not want to use.

How can I keep my indoor cat entertained?

1. Add accessible height

Offer a stable perch, shelf, or cat tree where your cat can look around and rest. Choose a surface large enough for the cat to stretch out. Make elevated spots easy to reach: kittens and cats with limited mobility may need a low perch or ramp rather than a tall jump.

2. Provide hiding places

Give your cat quiet places to conceal itself, such as a cardboard box or a sheltered bed. In a multi-cat home, provide more than one retreat and position them so another cat cannot easily block the way in or out.

3. Offer scratching surfaces

Scratching is a normal activity, so make suitable scratching areas available. Cats differ in whether they prefer a vertical post or a horizontal pad and in which surface they use. Offer an appropriate option and watch what your cat actually chooses.

Combined with the random motions of the butterfly and tail, it creates an irresistible and engaging play experience that keeps your cat happily chasing even when they're by themselves

4. Keep different resources in separate places

Make food, water, litter, resting, play, and scratching areas distinct rather than clustering them together. The AAFP and ISFM guidelines specifically recommend separating food and water and placing toileting areas away from other resources. That separation gives cats more choice about where and when to use each resource.

5. Distribute resources in homes with more than one cat

Provide enough resources in different locations that each cat can reach them without having to pass or compete with another. Separate feeding stations and multiple resource choices can reduce blocked access. An extra resource per cat is a practical rule of thumb, not a substitute for observing whether each cat can use the resources comfortably. See the Cats Protection Behaviour Guide and Singapore’s Animal and Veterinary Service cat-care guidance.

6. Make play resemble prey movement

Use an interactive toy to move like prey, along the floor or through the air according to your cat’s play style. Follow the cat’s interest rather than forcing a particular pace or pattern. The AAFP and ISFM guidelines describe opportunities for pseudo-predatory play and feeding behavior as part of feline environmental needs.

7. Let your cat catch the toy

Build in chances to catch the toy during play. Repeatedly teasing a cat with a toy that can never be caught may leave the activity unresolved; a capture gives the sequence a satisfying finish.

8. Turn some meals into food-seeking activity

If it suits your cat’s diet and feeding plan, hide or scatter some of its regular food, or use a puzzle feeder. Count that food as part of the usual daily plan rather than adding extra treats on top. The guidelines include food-hiding, scatter-feeding, and puzzle-feeding activities among ways to provide foraging opportunities.

10. Protect quiet sleeping places

Make comfortable, quiet resting spots available where your cat can sleep without being disturbed. A cat should be able to choose a safe place to rest, not only a busy shared area.

11. Give cats room to avoid one another

In a multi-cat household, each cat needs the option to retreat, reach resources, and avoid unwanted interactions. Another cat is not automatically enrichment: social compatibility varies, and adding a cat does not replace providing separated resources and safe places.

12. Adapt enrichment to your cat, and consider controlled outdoor access if suitable

Adjust play intensity and access to suit the individual cat. Older cats still benefit from play, but may prefer a different pace; kittens and cats with mobility limits may need lower resting places or ramps. For cats and households where it is appropriate, the AAFP describes enclosures, cat-safe fencing, and positively trained harness walks as ways to provide stimulation while reducing outdoor risks. These are options, not requirements: indoor-only living can meet a cat’s needs when its environment is adequately enriched.

Are string toys safe for cats?

Do not leave string, yarn, rubber bands, or aluminium foil available as toys. Singapore’s Animal and Veterinary Service warns that cats may swallow these materials and suffer a fatal bowel obstruction. Keep small or ingestible play materials out of reach when you are not supervising. The agency’s cat-care guidance was updated on 1 October 2026.

How many litter boxes do I need for two cats?

The guidance used here emphasizes providing sufficient resources in separate locations and ensuring each cat can reach them without competition; it does not establish one universal litter-box count for every home. As a practical rule of thumb, households often provide an extra resource per cat, but distribution and reliable access matter. Place toileting areas apart from food, water, and other resources, and make sure one cat cannot prevent another from using them.
