Keeping a cat indoors can reduce exposure to traffic, attacks, disease, poison, severe weather and other outdoor hazards—and it prevents your cat from hunting wildlife. Indoor living is not automatically a complete welfare plan, though: cats still need safe resting places, play, opportunities to forage, vertical space and clean toileting areas. The best arrangement depends on the individual cat and whether you can meet its needs.
12 reasons to keep your cat indoors
-
Lower risk of being hit by a vehicle
Roaming cats can encounter traffic, where a collision may cause severe injury or death. Keeping your cat inside limits its exposure to this hazard. The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) identifies vehicles among the risks of free-roaming, and the ASPCA also advises that outdoor cats face traffic dangers.

-
Fewer encounters with animals that may attack or injure it
Outdoor cats can be attacked by other cats or animals. Indoor living reduces opportunities for those encounters, although it cannot prevent every injury inside the home.

-
Protection from harsh weather and temperature extremes
Outside, a cat may be exposed to severe weather and temperatures without a reliable way to reach shelter. Indoor life offers a more controlled environment.
-
Lower exposure to infectious and parasitic agents
Contact with other animals and the outdoor environment can expose cats to infectious and parasitic agents. Staying indoors reduces some of those opportunities; it does not replace veterinary care or appropriate preventive measures.
-
Fewer opportunities for bite-transmitted FIV
Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) is mainly spread through bite wounds. Cornell Feline Health Center says keeping cats indoors and away from potentially infected cats markedly reduces the likelihood of infection. This is a specific example of how limiting outdoor encounters can reduce disease exposure.

Less contact with animals involved in zoonotic disease pathways
Roaming can bring cats into contact with wildlife and animals that live near people, some of which may be involved in the spread of diseases that can affect humans. Indoor living limits those contacts but does not eliminate zoonotic risk. Handwashing, veterinary care and appropriate preventive measures remain important. See the Cornell Feline Health Center’s overview of zoonotic diseases.

-
Less hunting and harm to wildlife
Cats may hunt even when they are well fed. Roaming gives them opportunities to injure or kill wildlife, which can affect native populations and ecosystems. Keeping your cat indoors limits its chance to hunt wild animals.
-
Less exposure to predators
Depending on where you live, outdoor cats may encounter predators. The 2024 FelineVMA/AAFP lifestyle statement includes exposure to predators and other outdoor animals among the hazards to consider. Indoor living removes many such encounters.
-
Fewer uncontrolled environmental hazards
Roaming cats face conditions and hazards beyond a caregiver’s control. A home environment can reduce this exposure, though the home itself still needs to be made safe for a cat.

Less chance of getting lost
A cat allowed to roam may travel beyond familiar areas or become separated from home. Limiting unsupervised roaming reduces that opportunity, though no lifestyle can guarantee a cat will never get lost. The FelineVMA/AAFP statement recommends identification, including a microchip and visible ID when appropriate, for cats allowed outside.

More protection from theft or intentional removal
A cat outdoors without supervision may be taken or kept by someone else. Keeping it indoors reduces this possibility, but the sources reviewed do not quantify how often it happens.
Indoor cats still need an environment that supports their welfare
Safety from outdoor hazards is only one part of a cat’s wellbeing. The 2024 FelineVMA/AAFP statement says indoor-only caregivers must make significant efforts to meet cats’ environmental needs. It identifies food and water, comfortable resting places, simulated hunting and foraging, play, safe territory with vertical space, and appropriate clean toileting areas. When these needs are unmet, anxiety, stress-related illness or behavior concerns may result.
The FelineVMA’s 2025 indoor-cat guidance groups those needs into five pillars:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- A safe place.
- Multiple, separated key resources.
- Opportunities for play and predatory behavior.
- Positive, consistent and predictable interaction with people.
- An environment that respects a cat’s sense of smell and other senses.
Interactive toys and food puzzles can support play and foraging; scratching surfaces give cats an appropriate place to scratch; and perches provide vertical territory. These are ways to support specific needs, not substitutes for caregiver interaction, veterinary care or the rest of a cat’s environment.

Indoor-only, controlled access or free roaming?
There is no universal arrangement that suits every cat and household. The veterinary guidance recognizes that indoor-only, indoor/outdoor and outdoor-only lifestyles have different risks and benefits, and that individual cats vary. Consider both outdoor exposure and whether you can provide a stimulating, safe environment.
| Arrangement | Outdoor exposure | Wildlife opportunity | What to consider |
|---|---|---|---|
| Indoor-only | Limits exposure to many outdoor hazards, but does not eliminate all risks. | Limits opportunities for the cat to hunt wildlife. | Provide essential resources, play, foraging, vertical space, safe resting places and clean toileting areas. |
| Controlled outdoor access | Allows outdoor experience while limiting unsupervised roaming. | Restricts opportunities to hunt compared with free roaming. | Possible approaches include an enclosure, cat-safe fence or harness-and-leash walks; suitability depends on the cat. |
| Free roaming | Exposes the cat to hazards and animal encounters beyond the caregiver’s control. | Gives the cat opportunities to hunt and harm wildlife. | Consider local conditions, the individual cat’s needs and identification, including a microchip and visible ID when appropriate. |
How to transition an outdoor cat to indoor life
A cat accustomed to going outside may meow at doors or windows during the transition. The ASPCA notes that consistency can give a cat time to adjust and identifies an enclosure as one option for outdoor time. A sudden or persistent behavior change should not automatically be treated as protest; medical causes may need veterinary evaluation.
-
Set up the indoor environment
Before changing access, provide the essentials: food and water, comfortable safe resting places, clean toileting areas, places to climb or perch, and ways to play and forage.

Keep the new boundary consistent
Responding inconsistently to requests to go out can make the boundary harder to establish. Give the cat time to adapt while ensuring its indoor needs are met.

Consider controlled outdoor time if it suits your cat
An enclosure or cat-safe fence can offer outdoor access with less roaming. Harness-and-leash walking is another option for cats that tolerate it; it is not suitable for every cat. Use identification when a cat is allowed outside.
-
Ask a veterinarian about concerning behavior changes
If meowing or other behavior changes are sudden, persistent or worrying, seek veterinary advice rather than assuming the cause is the transition.
What the available evidence does—and does not—show
The veterinary and animal-welfare sources cited here describe hazards and welfare considerations, but they do not establish a universal lifespan advantage or a precise number of wildlife animals killed by cats. The practical case for indoor living is about reducing exposure and hunting opportunities, while recognizing that indoor caregivers must meet cats’ needs and that individual circumstances matter.
