Symbiosis is a close, sustained relationship between different species. It is not automatically beneficial to both partners: mutualism benefits all participants, commensalism benefits one without a measurable effect on the other, and parasitism benefits one while harming the host. The twelve examples below include animal–animal partnerships, animal–plant associations and one animal–algae mutualism, with caveats where the evidence is mixed or incomplete.
What “symbiosis” means in biology
The word symbiosis describes the closeness and persistence of an interspecies interaction; it does not describe the outcome by itself. A relationship can be mutualistic, commensal, parasitic or context-dependent. The Natural History Museum also distinguishes obligate mutualism, in which partners depend heavily on one another, from facultative mutualism, in which both benefit but can live apart.

That distinction matters because a familiar story such as “one animal cleans another” may leave out costs. Benefits can change with season, age, food supply or the particular species involved. Some associations below are well-supported mutualisms; others are documented close associations whose exact exchange is still being worked out.
A symbiotic partner need not be another animal. Plants, algae and fungi can form equally intimate relationships with animals, as the pitcher-plant, cactus and coral examples show.

Detailed examples of animals living in symbiosis
1. Pistol shrimp and goby: a lookout beside the burrow builder
A pistol shrimp excavates and maintains a burrow that it may share with a goby. The fish has better vision in open water and watches for predators. When it detects danger, it bolts toward the entrance; the shrimp, often keeping an antenna in contact with the goby, responds to the fish’s signals and retreats into shelter. The goby may also gain a maintained refuge while the shrimp can obtain food opportunities around the fish.
This is generally described as a facultative mutualism: the partners benefit, but the association is not equally obligatory for every species or individual. A Natural History Museum account cites a study in which the goby left the burrow first, but that observation should not be generalized to every goby–pistol-shrimp pairing.
2. Aphids and ants: honeydew traded for protection
Many aphid species excrete a sugary liquid called honeydew. Some ant species collect it and, in return, protect aphids from predators and parasitoids. Ants may also move aphid eggs or young to safer feeding sites, effectively tending the colony.

3. Woolly bats and Nepenthes hemsleyana: a pitcher plant used as a roost
Woolly bats roost inside the elongated pitcher of the Bornean plant Nepenthes hemsleyana. The bat gains a sheltered resting place, while its nutrient-rich droppings provide the plant with a valuable fertilizer source. This is an animal–plant mutual exchange, even though the plant is the larger and more conspicuous partner.
The same Natural History Museum account describes a comparable association between tree shrews and another pitcher plant, Nepenthes lowii. It is a reminder that carnivorous plants can obtain nutrients through multiple animal relationships, not only by trapping insects.
4. Tree shrews and Nepenthes lowii: a second pitcher-plant partnership
Nepenthes lowii is documented in association with tree shrews. The pairing belongs in a broad symbiosis list because a mammal repeatedly uses the plant’s pitcher while the plant gains resources from the interaction. The short account that documents it presents it as comparable to the woolly-bat partnership but does not establish a single, universal balance of benefits for every tree-shrew–plant encounter. Treat it as a documented close association rather than assume that all pitcher plants and mammals exchange identical services.

Corals are animals, and many reef-building corals live with microscopic photosynthetic algae commonly called zooxanthellae. The coral provides the algae with shelter and access to nutrients. In return, the algae produce photosynthetic products that the coral uses for energy and growth.

Heat and other environmental stresses can disrupt this partnership. The coral may expel its algae, causing bleaching. If the loss is prolonged, the coral’s energy budget can collapse and survival is threatened. Bleaching is therefore not a new type of symbiosis; it is a visible sign that an existing mutualism has broken down.
6. Oxpeckers and grazing mammals: a “cleaning” relationship with a serious caveat
Red-billed and yellow-billed oxpeckers feed on ticks and flies found on hosts such as wildebeest, rhinoceroses and zebras. The birds obtain food, and removing some parasites can help the mammal. That pattern is often presented as a textbook mutualism.
Field observations also show oxpeckers picking at wounds. That behavior can delay healing or otherwise harm the host, so the net effect is mixed and context-dependent. The safest description is a potentially beneficial association whose outcome depends on what the birds are feeding on and the condition of the mammal.

Compatible clownfish live among the stinging tentacles of host sea anemones, gaining protection from many predators. The anemone may benefit when fish remove parasites, fan their fins to circulate water, supply nutrient-rich waste and deter predators that would eat the anemone.

Before entering a host, a clownfish acclimates its skin mucus; the precise mechanism that prevents the anemone’s stinging cells from firing remains unsettled. The Florida Museum of Natural History describes this mucus-acclimation process, while an American Museum of Natural History article emphasizes how much is still unknown about the anemone’s side of the partnership. Estefanía Rodríguez, an associate curator at that museum, wrote on June 26, 2019: "It’s astounding that when we look at the relationship between clownfishes and sea anemones, which is perhaps one of the most popular examples of symbiosis out there, we have essentially no clue what is going on with one of the two major players." The visible association is real even though its full mechanism is not.
8. Greater honeyguides and human honey hunters: cooperation shaped by culture
Greater honeyguides can lead people toward bee nests. A person opens the nest, takes the honey and leaves behind beeswax, eggs and larvae that the bird can eat. The bird gains access to food it might struggle to open alone, while the human hunter receives help locating a difficult-to-find resource.
The Natural History Museum identifies Hadza people of Tanzania among the groups known to work with honeyguides. This is a culturally learned human–wildlife interaction, not an identical instinctive service performed everywhere. The behavior depends on local traditions and on people recognizing and responding to the bird’s signals.
9. Senita moths and senita cacti: pollination that also costs the plant
Female senita moths transfer pollen among the cactus’s night-blooming flowers while laying eggs. Their larvae later consume some developing fruit tissue and seeds. The cactus receives pollination; the moth receives a nursery and food for its offspring.

The moth is described as the cactus’s only nocturnal pollinator, but not its only pollinator overall. Because larvae consume reproductive tissue, this is a specialized mutualistic interaction with a built-in cost rather than a one-sided benefit for the plant.
10. Sea anemones and hermit crabs: a documented partnership with details that vary
The Australian Museum records sea anemones living on hermit-crab shells. The mobile crab can carry an anemone into new feeding locations, while the anemone’s position on the shell may provide defensive stinging cells. However, the short factsheet does not establish the exact reciprocal benefit for every species pair. The observation proves a close association; it does not, by itself, prove that both partners always gain equally.
11. Sea anemones and snails: another shell-based association
Sea anemones are also reported living on snail shells. As with hermit-crab pairings, the shell provides a moving surface and may place the anemone where food particles pass, but the cited short account does not specify a universal exchange or demonstrate mutualism for every snail–anemone combination. Classifying it as a documented association is more accurate than calling every instance a guaranteed two-way benefit.

12. Sea anemones and boxing crabs: anemones carried on the claws
Boxing crabs are reported carrying sea anemones on their claws. The arrangement is visually striking and clearly intimate: the crab transports the anemones while keeping them positioned at its front. The available factsheet records the association but does not provide enough detail to assign a single reciprocal benefit to all boxing-crab and anemone species. It belongs in a broad symbiosis article, while its exact ecological outcome remains pairing-specific.

Ask five questions before labeling any close relationship “mutualism”:
- What does each partner gain or lose? Food, shelter, nutrients and protection are benefits; tissue damage, lost reproductive output or increased disease risk are costs.
- Can either partner live without the other? If yes, the relationship may be facultative. If dependence is strong, it may be obligate.
- Is the outcome consistent? Oxpeckers can remove parasites or feed on wounds; aphids can exchange honeydew or exploit ants.
- Are the partners animals? A plant or alga can be the symbiotic partner, as in pitcher plants, senita cactus and coral.
- How strong is the evidence for the mechanism? A repeated association is evidence that partners meet; it is not automatically proof that both benefit or that scientists know how the interaction works.
These checks explain why no single example represents all symbiosis. The term covers a spectrum of relationships, from tightly coordinated burrow sharing to partnerships whose benefits shift with circumstances or remain only partly understood.
