The best funny cat name is the one that makes you smile and still feels affectionate toward your cat. Try a style that suits your sense of humor—wordplay, food, an unexpected human name, pop culture, personality, or appearance—then say your favorite choices aloud to see which one feels natural.

Funny cat names by style

These ideas are prompts, not a ranking: humor is personal, and a name that fits one household may not be another person’s favorite. The categories draw on naming approaches featured by Catster, Rover, Purina UK, and RSPCA South Australia.

How to find a name that fits your cat

Use the lists as starting points, then personalize the joke. Rover’s examples include names based on behavior, while RSPCA South Australia suggests drawing on a cat’s distinctive traits or story. Purina UK also offers character references and food names. These are optional routes to inspiration, not rules for naming a cat.

  • Start with your humor. Choose the kind of joke you enjoy: a pun, an ordinary name in an absurd context, a food reference, or a character allusion.
  • Notice what is distinctive. A habit, sound, coat marking, or adoption story might suggest a name with a personal connection.
  • Check that the joke stays kind. An affectionate, lighthearted name is more likely to remain fun for you and comfortable to use around others. Catster advises keeping funny names chipper and sweet rather than embarrassing or harsh.
  • Try it aloud. See how the name sounds in everyday use and whether it is easy for you to say. For a longer joke name, RSPCA South Australia recommends using a short name or nickname.

Make the name practical for everyday use

A long, elaborate name can still work if you have a shorter call name. For example, “Professor Naps” could become “Naps,” and “Sir Fluffington” could become “Fluff.” Petco advises avoiding names that sound very similar to common household words or training cues; its guide also recommends putting the cat’s name and the owner’s contact information on a secure ID tag. That is practical brand-published advice, not a clinical finding.

Once you settle on a name, you can put it alongside current contact details on an ID tag, as Petco recommends. Keep the joke warm enough that you will be happy to use the name in a vet’s waiting room, on a tag, and at home.

Sources and scope

The name examples and practical ideas here reflect editorial suggestions from Catster, Rover, Purina UK, RSPCA South Australia, and Petco. They are inspiration rather than tested alternatives or evidence that one naming style is funnier than another. No scientific statistic is needed to choose a cat’s name.
