No. The veterinary sources reviewed do not establish that apple cider vinegar (ACV) treats an upper respiratory infection (URI) in cats, so don’t give it as a remedy. URI symptoms can have different causes and may need veterinary assessment. For congestion, a veterinarian may recommend supportive care such as humidified air, wiping discharge, and encouraging food and water; seek veterinary help for breathing difficulty or other signs of serious illness.
Why ACV is not a proven treatment for cat URI
The veterinary sources cited here do not recommend apple cider vinegar for feline URI or provide a proven dose or treatment protocol. That is a bounded finding about these sources, not proof that no study exists anywhere. It is enough reason not to use ACV in place of veterinary advice or treatment.

There is also a safety concern: Cornell’s small-animal toxin guidance lists vinegar among acids that can cause severe tissue damage depending on concentration. It does not give a safe or harmful dose for oral ACV in cats, so there is no basis here for estimating a safe amount. If your cat has swallowed ACV, contact a veterinarian or animal poison-control service for guidance rather than trying to treat the exposure at home.

URI describes illness affecting a cat’s nose and throat; it is a syndrome, not one specific infection. VCA lists feline herpesvirus type 1 and feline calicivirus among common viral causes, and Bordetella bronchiseptica and Chlamydophila felis among bacterial causes. Signs can include sneezing, nasal congestion, eye or nasal discharge, conjunctivitis, reduced appetite, and lethargy. Severe illness may involve difficulty breathing.

Because causes and severity vary, a cat’s symptoms should not be self-diagnosed as a simple cold. ASPCA advises having a cat with suspected URI assessed by a veterinarian; some cats may be infectious and need isolation, antibiotics, or other care. Untreated infections can progress to pneumonia or other serious complications.
What you can do at home while following veterinary guidance
Supportive care can help a congested cat stay comfortable, but it does not replace diagnosis or medication when those are needed. VCA says many uncomplicated cases can be managed at home, while severe illness or dehydration may require hospitalization. Follow your veterinarian’s advice for your cat’s condition.

- Encourage eating and drinking. Cornell emphasizes nutrition and hydration during respiratory infections. VCA suggests offering highly palatable canned food when congestion makes eating less appealing.
- Gently clean discharge. VCA recommends wiping the face or eyes with a moist tissue. Cornell describes wiping with saline in its guidance on calicivirus; ask your veterinarian which approach is appropriate for your cat.
- Increase environmental humidity. VCA describes sitting with a congested cat in a steamy bathroom for 10–15 minutes several times a day. A humidifier is another possible way to increase room humidity, but no particular device is specified or endorsed.
These are general supportive measures, not individualized treatment instructions. A veterinarian may prescribe eye medication, antibiotics when bacterial disease or a secondary bacterial infection is involved, antivirals in some cases, or other care based on the suspected cause and severity.
