This guide gives you more than 125 ideas, organized by Disney cats, other film felines, famous non-cat characters, coat color, and personality. Each character-based entry identifies whether the namesake is actually a cat, another animal, or a person, so you can choose a reference knowingly rather than assuming every famous name belongs to a feline.
There is no objective ranking of the “best” cat name. Coat and temperament can suggest a direction, but a name is a personal choice, not a demonstrated fit measured by a naming study.

How to use the list
Start with the category that matches your reason for looking: a beloved Disney character, a famous movie cat, a broader film reference, or a name that reflects appearance or behavior. Keep a short list of three to five favorites, say each one in ordinary sentences such as “Dinner time, ___” and “Come here, ___,” and consider whether visitors will understand the reference. This is practical household advice, not a scientifically tested naming method.
Character names are labeled as cat, other animal, or human/other character. A name can still be perfect for your cat when the original character is not feline; the label simply tells you what you are referencing.
Disney cat names
D23 identifies Figaro as Geppetto’s companion in Pinocchio and Sergeant Tibbs as a feline character in 101 Dalmatians. It also highlights cats from Alice in Wonderland and The Aristocats. Those are useful starting points when you want a clearly Disney-linked feline reference.
| Name | Source | Namesake | Why it works |
|---|---|---|---|
| Figaro | Pinocchio | Cat | Classic, two or three syllables, and unmistakably Disney. |
| Sergeant Tibbs | 101 Dalmatians | Cat | A sturdy choice for a watchful or authoritative cat. |
| Cheshire | Alice in Wonderland | Cat | Fits a sly, smiling, or hard-to-find companion. |
| Duchess | The Aristocats | Cat | Elegant for a poised white or cream cat. |
| Thomas O’Malley | The Aristocats | Cat | Use the full name for comedy or shorten it to O’Malley. |
| Marie | The Aristocats | Cat | Short, graceful, and easy to call. |
| Berlioz | The Aristocats | Cat | A distinctive musical reference for a dark-coated cat. |
| Toulouse | The Aristocats | Cat | Works especially well if you like place names. |

| Roquefort | The Aristocats | Mouse | A humorous choice when you enjoy an unexpected non-cat reference. |
| Dinah | Alice in Wonderland | Cat | Gentle and traditional without being overlong. |
| Lucifer | Cinderella | Cat | Suited to a dramatic, imperious, or black cat; the reference is the character, not a claim about your pet’s behavior. |
| Oliver | Oliver & Company | Cat | Friendly and familiar, with a direct film connection. |
| Mittens | Bolt | Cat | A cozy option for a cat with mitten-like paws or markings. |

Personality labels are prompts, not diagnoses. A kitten that seems shy on the first day may become adventurous later, so choose a name you will still enjoy if behavior changes.
A simple decision process
- Choose your reference route. Decide whether the important connection is Disney, a specific movie cat, a broader character, color, or personality.
- Make a short list. Keep three to five names that everyone in the household can pronounce and remember.
- Check the everyday sound. Say each name in a greeting, a recall, and a gentle correction. Notice whether the name is comfortable at normal volume.
- Check the reference. If the name comes from a character, confirm that you like the character’s story and that the species label matches what you intend.
- Live with the finalists. Use each name for a day before deciding. This is an informal way to notice which one feels natural, not a measured test of naming success.
- Keep the spelling practical. A distinctive spelling may look appealing, but a simple spelling is easier for veterinary records, tags, and other caregivers.
What the available Disney counts do—and do not—tell you
Disneyclips, a secondary compiled index rather than an official Disney authority, reports 47 feline characters among 1,283 identifiable characters in the official animated canon. The site’s catalog count reflects its own inclusion method and was shown as approximately 2.2 years old relative to an October 2026 search. It is useful for showing how many feline references exist, but it is not a Disney-published statistic and does not show that one name is more suitable or more popular with cat owners.
D23’s editorial descriptions support the straightforward identities of Figaro, Sergeant Tibbs, and the feline characters associated with Alice in Wonderland and The Aristocats. Broader claims about the objectively best name, naming success, or coat-to-name compatibility are not established by these sources.
