You can make engaging cat toys from cardboard, paper, fabric and a few ordinary household items. The 13 projects below cover food puzzles, batting toys, hiding places and chase toys, so you can match the activity to your cat instead of buying specialized equipment. Build every item with adult tools away from your cat, inspect it before use, supervise new toys closely, and remove anything your cat tries to chew or swallow.

Start with safety, not supplies

A homemade toy is only useful when its materials suit the individual cat playing with it. Cats differ in how intensely they chew, whether they swallow objects and which games they enjoy. ASPCA guidance calls for close, active supervision while DIY items are available; remove an item if a cat attempts to ingest it. The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) likewise advises watching new toys for swallowed strings, ribbons or small parts.

  • Keep construction tools away. Scissors, craft knives, staples, tape, wet glue and loose decorations are for adult construction only. Let non-toxic glue cure fully, and do not assume a glued edge is safe for a cat that chews cardboard.
  • Remove high-risk loose pieces. Do not add buttons, beads, rubber bands, bells that can detach or short pieces of string. Avoid any component small enough to fit entirely in your cat’s mouth.
  • Treat string toys as interactive equipment. Never leave a cat alone with ribbon, yarn, fishing-style line or a feather wand. Put these toys in a closed cupboard after every session.
  • Use paper, not plastic, bags. ASPCA Pet Health Insurance and ASPCApro describe paper bags for hiding and pouncing; plastic bags can entangle or suffocate a cat.
  • Check every session. Discard a damp, splintered, shredded or heavily soiled item. A cat that persistently eats non-food objects should skip chewable DIY projects and receive individualized veterinary advice.

Food puzzles should use part of the cat’s normal daily kibble or measured treats, not unlimited extras. Introduce one new toy at a time so you can see whether the design, material and difficulty suit your cat.

Hide-and-Seek: The animal tail-shaped plush hides under the cover cloth, rotating irregularly to appear/disappear, creating a hide-and-seek game. It mimics real prey, bringing unpredictable chases to stimulate the cat's brain and senses. Irregular Rotating Butterfly: The top has an auto-rotating butterfly that rotates, pauses or swings to simulate real flight, keeping the cat engaged. Various interactions ensure the cat gets enough exercise to avoid obesity
  • 3 Adjustable Speed Modes: Customize the excitement with separate buttons for the butterfly and tail. Choose from 3 settings: Steady (Blue Light), Active (Purple Light), and Random (Yellow Light). Suitable for high-energy cats to burn off steam or for calm cats to enjoy gentle play. Keep your feline entertained and prevent boredom, especially when they are home alone
  • Touch-Sensitive Activation: Your Cat's in Control! With smart touch-sensor technology, just tap the device to fire up the fun mode, it will kick off a 5-minute automatic play session instantly. Right after the play session ends, it switches directly to touch-sensitive standby mode, where the purple indicator light flashes every 20 seconds. Combined with the random motions of the butterfly and tail, it creates an irresistible and engaging play experience that keeps your cat happily chasing even when they're by themselves

13 DIY cat toys you can make at home

1. Folded toilet-paper-roll treat puzzle

Best for: Food-motivated cats that enjoy batting and rolling. Materials: One empty toilet-paper tube, a pencil, scissors and a few pieces of the cat’s regular kibble or small treats.

  1. Mark several holes along the tube. Make each opening large enough for a kibble piece to pass through; holes that are too small frustrate cats and encourage tearing.
  2. Fold one end inward, add a few pieces of food, then fold the second end closed.
  3. Place the tube on a washable floor and let the cat roll or bat it to release food.

Supervise or store away: Watch for cardboard chewing. Remove the tube when it becomes wet, ragged or small enough to swallow. This design follows AAHA’s roll-puzzle concept.

2. Box-and-roll reach feeder

Best for: Cats that like reaching into holes. Materials: A clean, shallow cardboard box with a lid, several paper rolls, a pencil, scissors and kibble.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Trace the outside diameter of each roll on the box lid, spacing the circles so the cardboard remains strong.
  2. An adult cuts the openings and pushes the rolls through so they stand in the lid. Secure them only with fully cured, non-toxic glue if they shift; do not leave wet adhesive accessible.
  3. Drop a small amount of kibble into the upright rolls. The cat reaches, paws and tips a roll to retrieve pieces.

Supervise or store away: Check that no cut edge is sharp and that the rolls cannot break into swallowable strips. ASPCA describes this box-and-roll feeder as a simple interactive option.

3. Side-opening slow-feeder tube

Best for: Cats that gulp kibble and need a slower, hands-on meal. Materials: A sturdy paper tube, pencil, scissors and a measured portion of kibble.

  1. Mark several openings along the tube’s sides. Make them just large enough for individual kibble pieces to fall out.
  2. Close or fold the tube ends using the same inward-fold approach used for paper-roll puzzles.
  3. Add the measured meal and place the tube on a non-slip surface. Increase the hole size if food cannot emerge with normal pawing.

Supervise or store away: Offer this only while you can observe the cat, especially if it shreds paper. Replace it at the first sign of loose fibers. The ASPCA slow-feeder concept uses a paper tube and kibble rather than a purchased feeder.

4. Cardboard box maze

Best for: Curious cats that enjoy navigating and choosing routes. Materials: A clean cardboard box, pencil, ruler and adult-use scissors or craft knife.

The shell of this kitten toys is made of safe silicone material, so you don't need to worry even if your pet chews it. The durable design means it can withstand daily wear and tear, providing long-lasting companionship for you and your pet
  1. Sketch a few cat-sized doorways on the sides and, if the box is deep enough, on the top.
  2. Cut the openings with an adult tool. Round or cover rough edges with a second layer of cardboard; do not leave exposed sharp points.
  3. Place a toy or a few pieces of kibble at different points so the cat explores rather than simply climbs inside.

Supervise or store away: Keep the maze on a stable, dry surface and remove it if it collapses or the cat begins eating the walls. ASPCA lists cardboard mazes among its enrichment builds.

5. Cardboard hideout or tunnel

Best for: Hiding, ambushing and resting. Materials: One suitably sized box, pencil and scissors or a craft knife.

  1. Choose a box large enough for the cat to turn around without becoming wedged.
  2. Cut two or more wide entrances so the cat has an exit route. Remove all packing tape, plastic film and staples.
  3. Set the box in a quiet area and allow the cat to investigate at its own pace. A paper ball can be placed just outside the entrance to invite a pounce.

Supervise or store away: Inspect the structure each day for crushed panels and sharp edges. Do not use a box that can tip onto a small cat. ASPCA’s house-and-tunnel guidance emphasizes appropriate sizing and supervision.

6. Connected-box castle

Best for: Climbing, moving between rooms and multi-cat exploration. Materials: Two or more clean cardboard boxes, pencil, scissors or craft knife and fully cured non-toxic glue or paper tape for adult assembly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Arrange the boxes on the floor before cutting so the finished structure cannot block a doorway or heater.
  2. Cut cat-sized openings between adjoining boxes and at least one easy exit from each level.
  3. Join the boxes only after the surfaces are dry and secure. Keep the castle low and wide unless you can anchor it against tipping.

Supervise or store away: Test the castle with gentle hand pressure before letting a cat inside, then inspect it whenever boxes shift. AAHA presents connected boxes as a simple castle-style enrichment project.

7. Crumpled paper ball

Best for: Batting, carrying and short chase games. Materials: One sheet of plain, uncoated paper.

  1. Remove staples, tape, labels, foil and plastic film from the sheet.
  2. Loosely crumple it into a ball large enough not to fit entirely in the cat’s mouth.
  3. Roll it across a clear floor or toss it a short distance for the cat to bat.

Supervise or store away: Paper softens quickly when wet. Replace it when it unravels into strips. ASPCApro includes paper balls among low-cost feline enrichment ideas.

  1. Cut off both handles completely so they cannot loop around a neck or leg.
  2. Open the bag fully and lay it flat, or place it on its side with the mouth unobstructed.
  3. Drag a paper ball past the opening or place a treat nearby; let the cat choose whether to enter.

Supervise or store away: Use paper only, never plastic, and remove the bag if it collapses, tears or traps a paw. ASPCA Pet Health Insurance and ASPCApro describe paper bags as hiding enrichment.

9. Fabric catnip bundle

Best for: Cats that respond to catnip and enjoy rubbing or wrestling. Materials: A square of tightly woven, washable fabric, a small amount of dried catnip (optional) and a strong fabric tie or several secure stitches.

  1. Put a small pinch of catnip in the center of the fabric. Catnip is optional; many cats show little or no response.
  2. Gather the fabric into a compact bundle and secure it so no filling can escape. Avoid long tails, beads or buttons.
  3. Offer it for a short session, then check the seams before the next use.

Supervise or store away: Remove the bundle if the cat opens the seam or pulls out fibers. ASPCA Pet Health Insurance describes a secured fabric catnip toy; it is not necessary for cats that do not enjoy catnip.

10. Feather wand

Best for: Chasing, leaping and controlled interactive play. Materials: A sturdy stick or dowel, a short length of strong string and clean feathers that cannot shed sharp shafts easily.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. An adult attaches the string firmly to the dowel and secures the feathers at the far end. Trim or remove any loose thread.
  2. Move the wand along the floor and behind furniture, allowing the cat to stalk and catch it. Avoid forcing jumps or dangling it over a sleeping cat.
  3. End the session by letting the cat catch the toy, then put the entire wand in closed storage.

Supervise or store away: This is never a leave-alone toy. AAHA supports the feather-wand concept, and ASPCA Pet Health Insurance advises monitoring fishing-style toys because string and feathers can be swallowed.

11. Sock-and-catnip toy

Best for: Wrestling and carrying. Materials: A clean sock without loose threads, soft fabric filling or another washable soft filler, optional catnip and, only for supervised interactive play, a short string or ribbon.

  2. Tie or sew the opening closed with a seam that cannot unravel easily.
  3. If you use a tether, attach it securely for a brief play session. For cats that chew string, omit the tether entirely and use the stuffed sock as a handheld or floor toy.

Supervise or store away: Store the toy after play, and remove it at the first pulled thread or opened seam. AAHA describes a sock toy with optional catnip and a string or ribbon; the tether increases supervision requirements.

12. Treat box puzzle

Best for: Cats that prefer nose work and easy food puzzles. Materials: A small clean cardboard box or paper container, pencil, scissors and the cat’s measured kibble.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Cut several openings in the lid or sides. Make them large enough for a paw and a kibble piece, with no sharp corners.
  2. Put a small portion of kibble inside and close the box without staples or loose tape.
  3. Place it on the floor and let the cat work out whether to paw, tip or nudge it. Make the puzzle easier by enlarging openings if the cat gives up.

Supervise or store away: Watch for cardboard ingestion and discard the box when wet or damaged. ASPCApro describes cut-opening boxes as a basic food puzzle.

13. Cardboard roll-ring puzzle

Best for: Cats that enjoy fishing individual pieces from a container. Materials: Several paper rolls, scissors, a shallow box and kibble.

  1. Cut the rolls into rings of roughly equal width. Remove scraps and inspect each ring for sharp edges.
  2. Place the rings loosely in the box so they form a light layer rather than a tightly packed mass.
  3. Scatter a measured amount of kibble among the rings. The cat moves the rings with its paw to uncover food.

Supervise or store away: Use a box large enough for easy paw access and remove rings that become shredded. The Ontario SPCA’s June 5, 2025 tutorial uses this box-and-roll arrangement for kibble enrichment.

How to introduce a new toy

  1. Start easy. Let the cat sniff the object before adding food or movement. For a puzzle, leave some kibble visible so the first success comes quickly.
  2. Match the session to the design. Food puzzles can replace part of a meal; wands and chase toys work best in short, active sessions that end with a catch.
  3. Read the cat’s signals. Interest may look like pawing, stalking, rubbing or returning to the toy. Hiding, flattened ears, frantic biting or repeated frustration means stop and simplify.
  4. Change one variable. Enlarge a hole, reduce the amount of food or move a box to a quieter area before abandoning the idea. A different texture may suit the cat better.

Cleaning and rotating homemade toys

ASPCApro advises disinfecting reusable toys and rotating toys into an enclosure every day or two; AAHA also recommends rotating enrichment without specifying a fixed schedule. In practice, keep only a few items available, wash or wipe materials that tolerate cleaning, and let fabric dry completely before reuse. Replace disposable paper and cardboard rather than trying to sanitize them once they are damp or torn. Store string, ribbon and wand toys in a closed container, separate from unsupervised cardboard toys.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Rotation does not require a large collection. Put away a familiar toy before interest disappears, then bring it back after another activity has had a turn. Keep food portions consistent when switching between puzzles so enrichment does not quietly increase calorie intake.

Common problems and fixes

The cat ignores the toy

Move it near a preferred resting place, add a familiar scent, or use a few pieces of the cat’s normal food. Some cats prefer hiding and ambushing to batting; switch from a ball to a box or paper bag. Do not force interaction.

The puzzle is too difficult

Make openings larger, use fewer rings, leave food partly exposed or offer the puzzle on a flat surface. Success should happen within a few paw movements at first. Increase difficulty only after the cat solves the simple version reliably.

The cat tears or eats the material

End the session immediately and remove the damaged item. Avoid that material in future projects, especially for a cat known to swallow non-food objects. Contact a veterinarian promptly if you suspect ingestion, choking or an intestinal problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Several cats compete

Provide separate food portions and more than one hiding or batting station. Supervise the first sessions so a confident cat cannot block another cat’s access or turn a box into a source of conflict.

When a ready-made toy is the safer choice

DIY enrichment is optional. Choose a purpose-made toy when you cannot produce smooth edges, secure seams or stable construction, or when your cat repeatedly destroys household materials. A veterinarian can help select safer enrichment for cats with dental disease, swallowing behavior, mobility limits or a history of gastrointestinal obstruction. The goal is appropriate, supervised activity—not proving that every toy must be homemade.

Bottom line

Begin with the simplest project that matches your cat’s preferred behavior: a paper ball for batting, a box for hiding or a small food puzzle for foraging. Build one item, watch how your cat uses it, and keep only toys that remain intact and enjoyable. Active supervision for strings and small parts, regular inspection, cleaning and rotation turn inexpensive household materials into safer daily enrichment.
