13 Evidence-Based Home Safety Tips for Small Children and Cats

A practical, source-based guide to keeping babies and toddlers safe around cats while removing household hazards that can injure or poison either species.

Cats and young children can share a home safely when adults control access, supervise contact and remove hazards at both species’ reach. The 13 measures below draw on guidance from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the ASPCA. They reduce preventable injuries and poisonings, but no barrier or routine guarantees safety; a responsible adult still needs to watch interactions and reassess the home as a child becomes more mobile.

The sources are organizational safety guidance, not a veterinarian’s examination or approval of this exact list. If you are pregnant and concerned about toxoplasmosis or another personal health issue, ask your clinician and veterinarian for advice specific to your household.

1. Supervise every child–cat interaction

An adult should remain close enough to intervene whenever a baby, toddler or other young child is with the cat. The AAP’s wording is direct: “Never leave a young child alone with an animal.” Familiarity does not remove risk. A cat may scratch or bite when frightened, cornered, hurt or overstimulated, and a child may not recognize the warning signs.

Many bites occur during rough play, according to the AAP. Supervision means watching the child and cat continuously, not merely being somewhere in the house or relying on a camera. If you must leave, place the child and cat in separate, secure areas.

2. Teach gentle, predictable behavior

Show the child how to stroke the cat with an open hand and stop when the cat moves away. Set rules that are simple enough to repeat every day:

  • Do not pull the tail, ears or fur.
  • Do not chase, corner, tease or pin the cat.
  • Do not grab food or toys from the cat.
  • Do not touch the cat while it is eating or sleeping.
  • Keep the child’s face away from the cat’s face.

Adults should model these rules and end play at the first sign of tension, such as hissing, growling, flattened ears, a rapidly flicking tail or an attempt to escape. Young children need reminders because impulse control develops gradually.

3. Create a quiet retreat the child cannot enter

Every cat needs a place to rest away from child traffic. A separate room, high perch or gated area can work if the cat can reach it freely and the child cannot follow, grab or wake the cat there. Keep food, water and the litter box arranged so the cat is not forced into a busy play area.

This retreat is not a substitute for supervision. It gives the cat a way to end an interaction before defensive behavior develops and protects uninterrupted sleep, which is especially important during the noisy, unpredictable months after a baby arrives.

4. Prepare the cat before the baby arrives

Use pregnancy to introduce changes gradually rather than making every adjustment on the day the baby comes home. The ASPCA recommends acclimating a cat to baby sounds and odors and practicing new routines in advance. Play recordings of crying at low volume, let the cat investigate baby equipment at its own pace and reward calm behavior. Never force the cat toward a new object or sound.

If feeding, play or cleanup will shift from one adult to another, make that change one to two months before the birth. Gradual schedule changes help the cat form a new pattern without associating the baby’s arrival with sudden loss of attention. Keep normal play and predictable quiet time where possible.

5. Keep the cat out of infant sleep spaces

Cribs, bassinets and other baby sleeping locations should be off-limits to the cat. As the ASPCA explains, a newborn initially cannot turn over or move their head to clear an obstruction. The organization states: “Make sure that the crib and other baby sleeping-locations are off-limits to the cat.”

Close the nursery door during naps and overnight sleep. If the room has no door, the ASPCA mentions a temporary screen door or crib tent as possible measures; use only equipment that is designed for the crib or doorway and installed exactly as directed. Check the sleep area every time before placing the baby down. Do not rely on the cat to move away or on an unattended monitor to prevent access.

6. Secure medicines immediately after every use

Store prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins and supplements in an enclosed location that both child and cat cannot reach. Return each item immediately after taking or measuring it, and pick up dropped pills before either household member can investigate. A pill that is merely “out of sight” may still be accessible to a climbing toddler or curious cat.

The AAP notes that child-resistant caps reduce access but are not fully childproof. Keep medicines in their original, labeled containers so an exposure can be identified quickly. Do not put loose tablets in a handbag, on a counter or on a bedside table where a child or pet can reach them.

7. Lock away cleaners, laundry products and chemicals

Keep detergents, bleach, disinfectants, solvents, cosmetics, automotive fluids and other chemicals in their original containers and in storage that is genuinely inaccessible to children and pets. Closed, high cabinets or locked storage are safer than a low cupboard with a simple push latch. Never transfer a chemical into a food or drink container.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Safety latches can help, but the AAP warns that latches may malfunction or eventually be defeated. Test them periodically and look for a second layer of protection when a product is especially hazardous. Keep laundry packets sealed in their original container; a colorful, bite-sized packet can attract a toddler and may leak if a cat punctures it.

8. Remove poisonous plants and isolate pest baits

Identify plants inside the home, on balconies and in the yard. Remove varieties known to be poisonous or put them where neither child nor cat can reach leaves, flowers, soil or fallen pieces. Ask a veterinarian or poison professional about an unfamiliar plant rather than assuming that a “natural” plant is harmless.

Do not leave insecticide or rodenticide baits at floor level. “Pet-resistant” packaging does not mean pet-proof, and a toddler may be able to open or move a station that a cat cannot. Follow the product label, secure every station and remove spilled granules promptly.

9. Put away small toys and cover garbage

Pick up building pieces, doll accessories, craft items, balloons and other small objects after play. A cat can mouth or swallow an item that a child has left on the floor, while a toddler can choke on pieces intended for an older child. Store age-inappropriate toys in a closed container and inspect toys for broken parts.

Use a lidded garbage can or place waste behind a closed door. Food scraps, bones, medication packaging and cleaning-product residue can all create hazards for a roaming cat, and an open bin gives a mobile child an easy route to sharp or contaminated items.

10. Secure cords, curtain pulls and long draperies

Keep electrical cords and blind or curtain pulls out of reach. Tie or shorten loops according to the window-covering manufacturer’s instructions, route charging cables away from the floor and replace damaged cords. A cat may chew or become tangled in a dangling line; a child may pull it or place it in their mouth.

Prevent long curtains from pooling where a cat can climb or play with them. Anchor furniture near windows so a child cannot use it to reach a cord, and do not leave a charging device on a crib, playpen or other child-accessible surface.

11. Fit locks and intact screens to openable windows

For a cat’s escape and fall prevention, the ASPCA advises that windows that open should have both a lock and a screen. Check every screen for loose edges, tears and gaps, and verify that the lock engages fully each time the window is closed. A cat can push through a poorly fitted screen.

This is pet-safety guidance, not a complete child fall-prevention specification. If a window is reachable by a crawling or climbing child, use safeguards that comply with local building and child-safety requirements, keep furniture away from the opening and supervise the child near it.

12. Match stair gates and cabinet latches to the hazard

Physical barriers work only when they are appropriate for the opening, correctly installed and checked as the child grows. The AAP recommends gates at both the top and bottom of stairs when a child is learning to crawl and walk, firmly mounted to studs. It cautions against accordion-style gates, which can create additional entrapment risks.

Dangerous-product cabinets need locks or latches that the child cannot operate. Compare the two uses before buying or installing hardware:

Hazard Placement Installation and check
Stairs At the top and bottom of the staircase during the crawling and walking stage Use a gate firmly mounted to studs; avoid accordion-style designs and follow the manufacturer’s instructions
Medicines, cleaners and other dangerous products On every cabinet, drawer or storage door the child could reach Use a suitable cabinet lock or latch, test that it closes completely and keep products in inaccessible storage because latches can fail or be defeated

Measure the actual opening, inspect the mounting points and retest after moving furniture or changing the room layout. A gate or latch is one layer of prevention, not permission to leave a child or cat unattended.

13. Know exactly whom to call after a possible exposure

Do not wait for symptoms after a suspected poisoning. Keep the product container, plant name or medication package available while contacting the service for the affected patient. The contacts below are U.S.-based; readers elsewhere should use their local poison center and emergency number.

Situation Contact Important qualification
Possible poisoning of a child Poison Control: 1-800-222-1222 The AAP describes this as a free, confidential U.S. service. For unconsciousness, breathing difficulty or seizures, call 911 or local emergency services immediately.
Possible poisoning of a cat ASPCA Animal Poison Control: (888) 426-4435 The ASPCA lists this U.S. number and notes that a consultation fee may apply. A veterinarian can also direct urgent care.

Never induce vomiting or give a home remedy unless a poison professional or veterinarian specifically instructs you to do so. Have the child or cat’s age, weight, symptoms, time of exposure and suspected substance ready. If either patient is having trouble breathing, collapsing or seizing, emergency services take priority over searching for additional information.

How to use these protections in daily life

Safety changes as a child progresses from rolling to crawling, climbing and opening containers. Recheck the home after each developmental change, after moving furniture and whenever the cat develops a new habit such as jumping onto a counter. During active play, keep the child and cat within the same adult’s view; during sleep, meals and any period when you cannot watch, separate them with a closed door or a properly installed barrier.

The AAP reports that approximately 3 million people—many under age 5—swallow or have contact with a poisonous substance each year (AAP, “Poison Prevention & Treatment Tips for Parents,” updated April 3, 2026). That figure is a reason to make secure storage routine rather than an occasional weekend project. A short daily check of medicines, chemicals, baits, windows, cords and floor-level objects can catch a new hazard before a child or cat does.
