There is no dog that is guaranteed not to shed or guaranteed to be allergy-free. “Dogs that don’t shed” is useful search language, but the accurate description is low-shedding or hairless. The American Kennel Club (AKC) states that no dog breed is completely hypoallergenic, and Cleveland Clinic notes that objective studies do not support the idea that any breed is truly hypoallergenic.

Here are 13 commonly cited low-shedding or hairless candidates, followed by the grooming, allergy, and lifestyle checks that matter more than a breed label. Treat the list as a starting point, not a ranking: coat, exercise needs, size, grooming workload, and the individual dog all affect whether a match works in your home.

What “doesn’t shed” really means

All dogs lose some hair or skin cells. A low-shedding coat may hold loose hair in the coat instead of dropping large amounts around the house, while a hairless dog has little or no body hair. Neither description predicts a person’s allergy response by itself.

Dog allergens are associated with dander (shed skin), saliva, skin, and urine, not only fur. An individual dog can therefore trigger symptoms even when its coat leaves very little hair on furniture. The AKC’s wording is unambiguous: “No dog breed is completely hypoallergenic.” Cleveland Clinic likewise advises people with allergies to discuss dog ownership with a doctor or allergist.

13 low-shedding or hairless dogs to consider

The breeds below are a curated set drawn from examples named by the AKC and Cleveland Clinic. Those sources do not establish an official ranking or one canonical list of exactly 13. The table deliberately avoids pretending that a breed name can answer every lifestyle question; use the final column to identify what you still need to verify in an authoritative breed profile, with a responsible breeder, or with a rescue organization.

Breed Coat category What to check before choosing
Afghan Hound Coated, low-shedding candidate Ask about brushing, coat care, exercise, and whether professional grooming is realistic for your schedule.
American Hairless Terrier Hairless candidate Confirm skin-care, weather protection, exercise, and allergy response with the individual dog.
Bedlington Terrier Coated, low-shedding candidate Verify trimming, brushing, activity, and terrier temperament requirements.
Bichon Frise Coated, low-shedding candidate Its hair grows continuously; regular grooming is needed to prevent mats. Confirm brushing frequency and salon costs.
Chinese Crested Hairless or coated-type candidate Ask which coat type the dog has and what skin or coat maintenance that type requires.
Coton de Tulear Coated, low-shedding candidate Check daily-life exercise, brushing, mat prevention, and tolerance for regular handling.
Giant Schnauzer Coated, low-shedding candidate Confirm the dog’s exercise, training, grooming, and space needs before choosing a large working breed.
Irish Water Spaniel Coated, low-shedding candidate Ask about activity, water-related care, coat maintenance, and training expectations.
Kerry Blue Terrier Coated, low-shedding candidate Verify terrier behavior, exercise, clipping, and socialization requirements.
Lagotto Romagnolo Coated, low-shedding candidate Check mental stimulation, exercise, brushing, trimming, and the breeder’s health screening.
Maltese Coated, low-shedding candidate Confirm brushing and coat-care time, handling needs, and how the dog fits your household routine.
Poodle Coated, low-shedding candidate Regular brushing helps prevent tangles and mats. Match the variety and activity level to your household, and budget for ongoing grooming.
Xoloitzcuintli Hairless and coated varieties The breed comes in three sizes and both hairless and coated varieties. Confirm which type and size you are considering, plus skin, coat, and exercise care.

“Low-shedding” does not mean “low-maintenance.” A coat that drops less loose hair can keep that hair trapped until it is brushed, combed, clipped, or professionally groomed. The Bichon Frise is a clear example: continuously growing hair needs regular care to prevent mats. Poodles also need brushing to prevent tangles and mats. Hairless dogs avoid much of the brushing burden but may require other routine care, such as attention to exposed skin and protection from weather; ask a veterinarian or breed specialist about the individual dog.

How to choose among the 13

1. Start with your allergy risk, not the breed name

Make a practical exposure plan. Visit the breeder, foster home, or rescue more than once if possible, and observe your symptoms during the visit and afterward. A short meeting cannot guarantee future tolerance, but it is more informative than relying on a “hypoallergenic” label. Do not assume that a hairless dog is automatically safer: allergens can come from skin, saliva, and urine.

2. Decide how much grooming you can sustain

Write down the maintenance you can reliably provide every week, not the routine you hope to manage during a quiet month. Ask for a realistic brushing, bathing, trimming, and professional-grooming schedule. Request an estimate of local grooming prices and the time needed for drying and detangling. Learn whether the dog accepts handling of its feet, ears, face, and tail; a coat that mats quickly becomes a welfare problem when grooming is postponed.

3. Match size and activity to your home

AKC emphasizes that breeds differ in exercise and lifestyle needs. A low-shedding coat does not make a dog suitable for an apartment, a sedentary household, or a family with young children. Before choosing, verify adult size, daily exercise, mental stimulation, training needs, noise level, and compatibility with other pets. The Xoloitzcuintli illustrates why labels can hide important variation: it comes in three sizes and in hairless and coated forms.

4. Check the individual dog’s history

Ask where the dog was raised, how it responds to strangers and handling, and what grooming it has already experienced. For a puppy, request health-testing information for the parents and clear vaccination and veterinary records. For an adult or rescue dog, ask about prior homes, skin or ear problems, medication, and any bite or fear history. A breed tendency cannot replace an assessment of the dog in front of you.

Grooming practices that reduce loose hair and mats

Use a brush or comb suited to the coat rather than choosing by marketing claims. Have a professional groomer demonstrate the technique, especially for curly or continuously growing coats. Work in short sessions and reward calm handling. Stop if you encounter a tight mat, sore skin, or a dog that is panicking; forcing a painful session can make future care harder.

  • Brush at the interval recommended for the dog’s actual coat, increasing frequency when the coat is growing or becoming tangled.
  • Check high-friction areas such as behind the ears, under the collar, in the armpits, and around the legs.
  • Keep scheduled trims so hair does not become unmanageable between appointments.
  • Ask a veterinarian before using medicated shampoos, skin products, or supplements for itching or odor.
  • Never shave a dog solely to control allergies without professional advice; coat removal does not remove saliva, dander, or urine allergens.

Home measures for allergy management

Environmental steps can reduce exposure, but they are not cures and cannot guarantee symptom control. Cleveland Clinic discusses keeping the dog out of the bedroom and using HEPA filtration. The AKC suggests laundering pet bedding, maintaining grooming, reducing heavy carpets and drapes that trap dander, and considering pet-hair vacuums or air purifiers.

Questions to ask a breeder, rescue, or foster home

  • Can I spend time with this specific dog indoors and outdoors before deciding?
  • What grooming does this dog receive now, and how often does it need brushing or trimming?
  • Has the dog shown itching, recurrent ear problems, skin infections, or reactions to products?
  • What exercise and mental stimulation does the dog receive on a normal day?
  • How does it behave around children, visitors, cats, and other dogs?
  • What adult size should I expect, and which size or coat variety is this dog?
  • Which veterinary records and parental health tests can you provide?
  • What happens if my household cannot manage the dog’s grooming or allergy-related needs?

Common mistakes to avoid

Assuming “hypoallergenic” means symptom-free

No breed can make that promise. Treat the term as shorthand for a lower-shedding or commonly recommended candidate, then evaluate your reaction to the individual dog.

Choosing by coat alone

A coat decision that ignores exercise, temperament, size, grooming cost, and training can produce a poor match even when the house has less loose hair.

Underestimating maintenance

Low shedding can shift work from sweeping to brushing, detangling, clipping, bathing, and professional grooming. Price and schedule those tasks before bringing the dog home.

Using cleaning as a substitute for medical advice

Vacuuming, laundering, and filtration may help reduce environmental exposure, but they do not eliminate allergens or replace an allergist’s plan.

A practical decision checklist

  1. Confirm with a clinician whether living with a dog is medically reasonable for your household.
  2. Select two or three candidates whose size, activity, temperament, and grooming demands fit your routine.
  3. Meet the actual dog repeatedly and monitor symptoms during and after visits.
  4. Get written details on grooming, veterinary care, exercise, and behavior.
  5. Arrange the grooming tools, cleaning plan, veterinary relationship, and emergency budget before adoption or purchase.
  6. Reassess the match during the trial or return period offered by the rescue or breeder.

The best choice is not the breed with the smallest amount of visible hair. It is the individual dog whose allergen exposure, grooming workload, activity level, temperament, and care costs your household can manage for the dog’s entire life.
