“Mastiff” can mean the formally named Mastiff (often called the English Mastiff) or a broader group of mastiff-type dogs. This 13-dog guide includes both: recognized breeds such as the Bullmastiff and Tibetan Mastiff, plus related dogs such as the Great Dane and Dogo Argentino that share mastiff traits but are not, strictly speaking, Mastiffs.
All 13 can be affectionate, imposing companions, but “full-body cuddles” do not mean identical care or temperament. Size, coat, drool, guardian instinct, exercise needs and the owner’s training experience vary widely. Use the profiles and comparison table to identify which type fits your household, then meet individual dogs and obtain breed-specific veterinary advice before deciding.

What counts as a Mastiff?
Breed terminology is the first thing to clarify. The Fédération Cynologique Internationale places the Mastiff in Group 2, Molossian type, Mastiff type, with Great Britain as its origin. The American Kennel Club (AKC) treats a breed standard as an ideal description of structure, movement and temperament—not a guarantee of how every individual dog will behave.
The Daily Paws list on which this guide is based uses “Mastiff” in two ways: as the name of one breed and as shorthand for dogs with mastiff-type, or Molosser, traits. The Dogo Argentino is explicitly mastiff-type rather than a Mastiff, and the Great Dane is not a “true” Mastiff even though the list describes Mastiff ancestry or shared characteristics. Treat the 13 entries as a practical companion-dog guide, not a universal kennel-club taxonomy.

Guardian breeds can be loyal and calm with their families while remaining reserved around unfamiliar people. Early, positive training and carefully managed socialization are therefore safety essentials, not optional polish. Breed tendencies are useful for planning, but genetics, learning history, health and the individual dog still matter.
The 13 Mastiff and mastiff-type dogs
1. Mastiff (English Mastiff)
The English Mastiff is the list’s largest and most literal example. The AKC lists males at 160–230 pounds and females at 120–170 pounds, with minimum heights of 30 inches for dogs and 27.5 inches for bitches. Those are standard figures and an upper weight is not a promise that every dog will reach it.
Its short, double coat is comparatively simple to brush, but a giant body still creates substantial food, equipment and veterinary commitments. The AKC describes a dignified, docile yet protective temperament. Begin obedience work and socialization early, use calm consistency, and manage introductions rather than assuming size equals friendliness.

2. Bullmastiff
Gamekeepers in England developed the Bullmastiff to deter poachers. The AKC standard describes a short, dense coat and sums up the intended temperament as “Fearless and confident yet docile.” That combination can make a well-trained dog a steady family companion, but its protective heritage requires clear boundaries and supervised interactions.
Plan for routine exercise, reward-based training and social exposure to people, places and handling. A confident guardian should not be encouraged to make independent decisions about visitors.
3. Tibetan Mastiff
The Tibetan Mastiff has a thick coat and a pronounced mane. Historically it guarded families and property, and the AKC standard characterizes it as aloof and watchful with strangers. Owners need to respect that reserve rather than forcing greetings.
Coat care increases during seasonal shedding, and a secure, well-managed home is important for a dog bred to notice activity around its territory. Consistent training and thoughtfully staged socialization help channel vigilance into controllable behavior.

4. Neapolitan Mastiff
The Neapolitan Mastiff is recognizable for loose facial skin, heavy jowls and, often, abundant drool. Daily Paws describes a calm nature but notes the practical need for routine wrinkle care. Tendencies vary, so check an individual dog’s skin, ears and mouth rather than assuming every Neapolitan will have the same level of maintenance.
Keep cleaning supplies and washable bedding available, and teach cooperative handling while the dog is young. Its calmness does not remove the need for socialization or for an owner who can physically manage a powerful adult.
5. Cane Corso
Sometimes called the Italian Mastiff, the Cane Corso is an active working breed. Daily Paws says it benefits from having a job and is better suited to experienced owners. Structured obedience, scent games, retrieving, hiking appropriate for the dog’s development and other supervised tasks can give its energy a productive outlet.
Do not rely on a large yard alone. A Corso needs an owner who can teach reliable responses, arrange controlled exposure to people and dogs, and maintain those skills throughout adulthood.

The Dogue de Bordeaux, also called the French Mastiff in the list, is described as affectionate and laid-back with its owners while still having notable activity needs. Positive-reinforcement training suits a dog that forms a close bond but is physically formidable.
Teach polite greetings, loose-leash walking and handling before the dog reaches full strength. “Laid-back” should describe a relationship and an individual temperament, not a reason to skip exercise or manners.
7. Boerboel (South African Mastiff)
“Boerboel” is glossed as “farmer dog” in Afrikaans. Daily Paws emphasizes strength, loyalty and agility, and recommends experienced owners who are comfortable with large, intelligent dogs.

Provide purposeful activity, problem-solving and clear household rules. Because a strong, agile guardian can overwhelm an unprepared handler, assess your ability to manage leashes, doors, visitors and veterinary handling before choosing this type.
8. Pyrenean Mastiff
The Pyrenean Mastiff has a long, fluffy coat and a gentle, calm characterization in the list. Regular brushing is necessary, with extra attention during seasonal shedding. Grooming is not merely cosmetic: it lets you find mats, skin changes and parasites early.
Its size still calls for training in calm movement and cooperative care. Confirm that your home, vehicle and budget can accommodate a giant long-coated dog before bringing one home.
9. Spanish Mastiff
The Spanish Mastiff has a livestock-guardian history. Daily Paws describes loyalty, possible wariness of strangers and seasonal shedding. Those traits can be compatible with family life when introductions are managed, but they are not a guarantee of sociability with every visitor or animal.
Socialize broadly without flooding the dog: reward calm observation, teach a dependable station or recall, and use barriers or a leash when unfamiliar people arrive.

Build dependable basic cues, practice calm handling and plan carefully for encounters with dogs and strangers. Local rules and housing policies may also affect whether this powerful breed is practical for you; verify them before acquisition.

11. Perro de Presa Canario
This Molosser-type dog comes from the Canary Islands and was historically used to protect livestock and homes. Daily Paws says it needs exercise and engaging activity.
Combine physical outlets with training and mental work rather than trying to exhaust the dog through repetitive, high-impact exercise. Secure fencing, visitor procedures and an owner able to control a strong adult are essential parts of the plan.
12. Dogo Argentino
The Dogo Argentino is mastiff-type, not simply another Mastiff breed. Daily Paws describes its development in Argentina from Spanish and Pyrenean Mastiff ancestry and its use as a large-game hunter.
It needs training, socialization, exercise and mental work. Channel drive into structured activities and reinforce calm behavior. A prospective owner should be prepared for an athletic working dog, not just a large dog that enjoys lounging.
13. Great Dane
Great Danes are not “true” Mastiffs, according to the list, although they share traits and were developed from German Mastiffs crossed with sighthounds. They need considerable living space even though the source describes their exercise requirement as comparatively modest.
Plan for room to turn, rest and move safely, plus furniture and transport that tolerate a giant frame. Teach leash manners and visitor etiquette early; a friendly Dane can still knock someone over accidentally.

Is a Mastiff-type dog right for you?
Start with logistics, not the appeal of a giant head on your lap. Check that your lease, insurer, local regulations and household members permit the dog. Measure doorways, stairs, vehicle access and sleeping space. A dog that cannot comfortably turn around, rest or be transported safely is a poor fit regardless of temperament.
Choose the management level you can sustain
- Training: Can you attend classes, practice daily and arrange controlled visitor introductions for several years?
- Handling: Can every adult who walks the dog control it without relying on physical strength alone?
- Time: Can you provide the specific exercise and mental work the type needs, including on wet or busy days?
- Maintenance: Can you brush, clean wrinkles or ears where relevant, trim nails and monitor skin throughout the dog’s life?
- Budget: Can you cover giant-size food, equipment, grooming and veterinary care?
Jo Myers, DVM, identified by Daily Paws as a telehealth practitioner, notes: “These are hard-working, giant dogs, but they’re also content with a relatively inactive lifestyle.” That observation does not make them maintenance-free: the same source cautions, “Giant dogs usually mean you’ll have giant veterinary expenses as well.”
Care essentials for a giant Mastiff-type puppy or adult
Protect growing joints
The AKC warns against overtaxing growing Mastiffs with excessive stairs, jumping or long walks. Giant breeds grow for a prolonged period, with appropriate nutrition important through puppyhood and up to about two years. Ask your veterinarian to select food, portions, body-condition targets and an exercise progression for the individual puppy; do not add supplements or deliberately accelerate growth without professional advice.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBuild skills before strength arrives
Teach name response, recall, loose-leash walking, a settle cue, polite greetings and cooperative examination with rewards. Introduce people, surfaces, sounds, grooming tools and veterinary handling gradually. For guardian types, calm neutrality is a more useful goal than making the dog greet everyone.
Keep a realistic grooming routine
For the short-coated Mastiff, the AKC recommends brushing every few days and more often during heavy shedding. Inspect and clean ears and facial wrinkles regularly, and trim nails. Longer-coated types such as the Tibetan and Pyrenean Mastiffs need more brushing, especially during seasonal shed periods. Drool-prone or heavily folded dogs may require frequent skin checks and washable bedding.
Budget for the whole body
Large beds, crates, collars, vehicles, food portions and medications can all cost more as dog size increases. Veterinary expenses may also be substantial. Daily Paws gives an approximate seven-to-10-year lifespan across Mastiff types, but the page does not identify an underlying primary dataset, so treat that range as a rough editorial estimate rather than a universal prediction.
Questions to settle before meeting a breeder or rescue
- What adult size, energy level and guardian behavior have been observed in the parents or known relatives?
- How does the individual dog respond to unfamiliar people, dogs, handling and confinement?
- What grooming, medical and training routines are already established?
- Which behaviors need management in your home, and what support will the organization provide after adoption?
Meet the actual dog in a controlled setting, speak with the responsible breeder or rescue about health and temperament, and involve your veterinarian before committing. A Mastiff-type dog can be a deeply affectionate companion, but the right match depends on sustainable management as much as on cuddly appeal.
