“Blue snake” is a color description, not a scientific group. The 13 rare blue snakes in this list include solid blue, blue-green, blue-black, striped and occasional blue-phase animals. Some are venomous; others are not. Color alone cannot tell you whether a snake is dangerous.
The “Komodo viper” in the headline is the blue color form of the white-lipped island pit viper (Trimeresurus insularis), not a separately established species name. The “painless killer” is the blue-lipped sea krait (Laticauda laticaudata), a headline claim that should not be treated as medical fact. Any wild snake should be observed from a safe distance and never handled.

How to interpret the phrase “13 rare blue snakes”
This is a visual list, not a taxonomic ranking. “Blue” covers several appearances: a nearly uniform blue body, blue-green scales, blue-black iridescence, blue stripes, or an unusual blue individual within a species that is normally another color. “Rare” is an editorial umbrella rather than a measured statistic; there is no established percentage for how often blue coloration occurs across snakes in general.
The species names and forms below follow the title-specific article. Current taxonomy, geographic limits and venom details have not been independently confirmed for every entry, so use this as a recognition guide rather than a field-identification authority. A snake’s color can vary with age, lighting, sex, locality, shedding and genetics.

The 13 snakes, one by one
1. Blue-lipped sea krait (Laticauda laticaudata)
This is the list’s “painless killer.” The article says its small fangs can make a bite feel painless despite potent neurotoxic venom. That pain claim has not been independently corroborated, so it is safer to regard any bite as a medical emergency regardless of how it feels. Sea kraits are venomous wildlife associated with marine environments, and a calm-looking animal is still capable of delivering venom.
Never swim toward one, pick it up, or try to move it from a beach, rock or boat. If a bite occurs, leave the animal alone, move to safety and contact emergency services immediately.
2. Eyelash viper (Bothriechis schlegelii)
The eyelash viper appears in the article as a blue-colored viper, showing why a species can be included in a blue-snake list even when blue is not the only color associated with it. The name refers to the distinctive scale projections above the eyes, but those features are not a substitute for a verified identification.
As with any viper, do not rely on a photograph or color morph to judge risk. A safe observation point, a telephoto lens and a clear escape route are better choices than attempting to expose the animal or move it for a picture.
3. Blue Malayan coral snake (Calliophis bivirgatus)
This entry is included for its strongly blue appearance. Coral snakes are venomous, and a bright pattern should never be interpreted as a warning that the animal is harmless or as an invitation to handle it. The article supplies the common-name and species-name pairing used here; local guides and authorities should be consulted before treating a sighting as definitive.
For a photograph, record the location and take pictures from a distance. Do not block the snake’s route, corner it or use a stick to reveal its markings.

4. Eastern indigo snake (Drymarchon couperi)
The eastern indigo is the clearest example in this list of a large, nonvenomous blue-black snake. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service describes an iridescent blue-black body with reddish, orange-brown or cream coloration on the chin and sides of the head. Its listed range includes parts of Florida and southeastern Georgia and Alabama.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIt has been listed as threatened under the U.S. Endangered Species Act since 1978. Habitat fragmentation and loss, vehicle strikes and other pressures affect the species. In the Southeast, development and agriculture consumed 97 percent of longleaf pine forests, a major habitat-loss figure cited by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in its 2023 account.
Do not handle an eastern indigo even though it is nonvenomous. The agency’s 2024 pamphlet states: “Though indigo snakes rarely bite, they should NOT be handled.” That instruction protects the snake and the observer, and it avoids confusing a protected animal with a pet.
5. White-lipped island pit viper (Trimeresurus insularis)
The blue form of this species is the source of the headline’s “Komodo viper” reference. The article says the blue form is primarily found on Komodo Island. “Komodo viper” should therefore be read as a descriptive hook, not as confirmation of a separate formal species called Komodo viper.
Because this is a pit-viper entry, treat a close encounter as potentially dangerous. Stay on marked paths where applicable, watch where you place your hands and feet, and never attempt to collect a specimen.

The name highlights a blue “beauty” form of a rat snake. It demonstrates that a blue snake list is not limited to vipers and kraits: elongated, non-viper snakes can also show striking blue coloration or blue-toned patterning.

Do not infer safety solely from the word “rat snake,” and do not infer danger solely from a dramatic color. Identification should combine body shape, markings, location and authoritative regional guidance. A distant photograph is safer than capture.
7. Malabar pit viper (Craspedocephalus malabaricus)
This pit-viper entry represents the blue-green end of the list rather than a simple cobalt-blue body. Lighting and iridescence can change how blue-green scales appear in a photograph, especially in shaded forest habitat.
As a pit viper, it belongs in the “observe, do not approach” category. Keep children and pets away, and tell local wildlife staff if the animal is in a place where people may accidentally step on it.

The blue feature here is a stripe rather than an entirely blue body. Striped snakes are particularly easy to misread when a quick photograph captures only one side of the animal, so record the full body profile if you can do so without moving closer.
A ribbon-snake label does not guarantee that an individual will behave predictably. Give it room to leave, and never pick it up to confirm the pattern.
9. Guatemalan palm pit viper (Bothriechis bicolor)
This species is included for a blue-toned palm-pit-viper appearance. The combination of an arboreal name and vivid color is a reminder to scan branches and foliage rather than looking only at the ground in tropical habitat.

Do not touch vegetation, branches or a snake’s hiding place to obtain a better view. If you are hiking in an area where palm pit vipers occur, closed footwear and a torch after dark reduce accidental contact without disturbing wildlife.
10. Blue-phase common tree snake (Dendrelaphis punctulatus)
“Blue phase” signals an occasional color form, not a separate species. A blue individual can therefore be unusual without the species as a whole being uniformly blue or scientifically rare.
Color phases can complicate identification, so avoid making a species-level claim from color alone. Note the habitat, approximate size and behavior, then seek a qualified local identification if it matters for conservation or safety.
11. Side-striped palm pit viper (Bothriechis lateralis)
The side stripe is the key visual idea in this entry. Depending on light and viewing angle, blue may appear as a narrow stripe, a blue-green cast or a stronger overall tone.
Its pit-viper identity means a close approach is an unnecessary risk. Do not attempt to relocate it from a campsite or trail; contact local wildlife personnel when intervention is genuinely needed.

This is another striped form, with blue emphasized in the common name rather than a claim that the entire animal is blue. Garter-snake patterning can vary, and a partial view can make a blue stripe look like a solid body color.

Leave the snake where it is. Even species commonly regarded as less dangerous can bite when restrained, and handling creates avoidable stress and identification errors.
13. Blue racer (Coluber constrictor foxii)
The blue racer closes the list with a blue-toned racer form. The name “racer” describes the article’s selected form, not proof that every individual has the same shade or that color can identify the subspecies by itself.
Racers are quick-moving snakes, so chasing one usually produces a worse photograph and a greater chance of startling it. Stand still, let it choose its route and record the sighting from a distance.
Why blue coloration appears in unrelated snakes
Blue can result from surface pigmentation, structural reflection, iridescence or a combination of those effects. A black snake may flash blue when its scales reflect light, while a green snake can look blue-green in shade. Stripes and patches may be inherited patterns, and a “phase” can describe a less common color expression within a species.
That variety explains why these 13 entries do not share one habitat, body plan or level of risk. A sea krait, an arboreal pit viper, a terrestrial indigo snake and a striped garter snake may all appear in the same visual list while being biologically very different.
How to identify a blue snake without putting yourself at risk
- Stop and create distance. Do not approach, corner, touch or throw anything at the snake. Keep pets and children behind you.
- Observe the whole animal. Note whether the body is solid, striped, banded, blue-green or blue-black, and whether the snake is on the ground, in water or in vegetation.
- Record context. Write down the country or state, habitat, date and approximate size. These details are often more useful than color alone.
- Photograph only from a safe position. Use zoom rather than moving closer. Never handle a snake to reveal its head, underside or pattern.
- Confirm with a regional authority. A current field guide, museum, university extension service or wildlife agency is more reliable than a color-only internet match.
What to do after a suspected bite
Move away from the snake and call emergency services immediately. Keep the person as still and calm as possible, remove constricting jewelry or clothing near swelling, and follow the dispatcher’s instructions. Do not cut the wound, suck out venom, apply ice, use a tourniquet or try to catch the snake for identification. A photograph taken from a safe distance is useful only if it does not delay care.
Conservation and responsible viewing
The eastern indigo’s threatened status shows why a striking snake should be treated as wildlife, not a collectible. Habitat loss, roads and disturbance can harm snakes even when people never see them. Stay on designated routes, avoid nesting or shelter sites, and report injured animals to the relevant wildlife agency rather than attempting rescue yourself.
Recommended Free Tools
A reputable snake-identification field guide can be a useful educational companion, especially one organized by the region where you live or travel. It should support observation, not encourage capture, private keeping or close-contact photography.
