These 13 commonly kept turtle and tortoise types can make good pets for owners prepared to provide specialized care and a commitment measured in decades. None is a low-maintenance pet: aquatic turtles need swimming space, filtration, heat, UVB, and a dry basking area, while tortoises and box turtles need appropriate terrestrial housing.
“Turtle” is often used broadly in the pet trade to include tortoises, but the difference matters. Confirm the exact species before choosing an animal, because common names can cover species with different needs.
13 turtle and tortoise types that can make good pets
The best choice depends on whether you can provide the animal’s adult habitat and care throughout its life. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service notes that turtles require specialized food, temperatures, housing, and care for decades. Avoid choosing based on a juvenile’s small size or appearance alone.
-
Red-eared slider (Trachemys scripta elegans)
Red-eared sliders are among the most widely kept pet turtles. Their yellow-striped shells and red markings behind the eyes make them easy to recognize, but popularity should not be mistaken for simplicity.

This semi-aquatic species needs a large swimming enclosure, a fully dry basking platform, heat, UVB lighting, and strong filtration. Captive sliders can live for more than 40 years. Plan for the adult animal rather than the small turtle often sold in stores. See the ReptiFiles red-eared slider care guide.
-
Yellow-bellied slider (Trachemys scripta scripta)
Yellow-bellied sliders have bright yellow markings and needs broadly similar to those of red-eared sliders. They require clean, heated water, adequate swimming depth, a secure basking area, UVB, and filtration suited to a large aquatic enclosure.
They are not starter turtles simply because they are commonly sold. Before getting one, make sure you can provide a large adult habitat and decades of care. See the ReptiFiles turtle and tortoise care sheets.
-
Painted turtle (Chrysemys picta)
Painted turtles are North American aquatic turtles known for red, orange, or yellow shell and skin markings. Adults may reach about 5 to 10 inches, depending on the subspecies, and can live for decades.

-
Eastern box turtle (Terrapene carolina carolina)
Eastern box turtles are terrestrial, omnivorous turtles—not aquatic turtles. They need secure, spacious housing, a temperature gradient, UVB, appropriate humidity, and access to shallow water for drinking and soaking.
Wild collection is illegal or restricted in many areas. Choose a verifiable captive-bred animal or a legitimate rescue instead of taking one from the wild. See the VCA box-turtle ownership guide.
-
Three-toed box turtle (Terrapene carolina triunguis)
The three-toed box turtle is another commonly kept box-turtle type. Its care is primarily terrestrial and overlaps with that of other box turtles: an escape-proof enclosure, suitable humidity, UVB and heat, hiding places, shallow water, and a varied omnivorous diet.

-
Ornate box turtle (Terrapene ornata ornata)
Ornate box turtles are terrestrial box turtles recognized by distinctive yellow markings. Their smaller size does not make them low-maintenance: they still need secure floor space, species-appropriate humidity, heat, UVB, and a suitable diet.
Research the needs of this species and verify that the animal was legally sourced. See the VCA box-turtle ownership guide and Animal Diversity Web’s ornate box turtle account.
-
Spotted turtle (Clemmys guttata)
Spotted turtles are small, generally about 4 to 5.5 inches long, with yellow spots on a dark shell. Their size can be misleading: they are a high-difficulty species, not a low-maintenance desktop pet.

Annual hibernation may be part of proper long-term care, so this species is generally better suited to an experienced keeper than a first-time turtle owner. See the ReptiFiles spotted turtle care sheet.
-
Razorback musk turtle (Sternotherus carinatus)
Razorback musk turtles are relatively small aquatic turtles with a pronounced ridge along the shell. Their adult size can make them more manageable than a large slider, but they still need deep, clean water, a safe route to the surface, basking access, UVB, and effective filtration.
They typically live around 20 years in captivity, with a recorded captive longevity of 29 years. A small enclosure may work for a young turtle temporarily, but the permanent habitat must accommodate adult swimming and maintenance needs. See Animal Diversity Web’s razorback musk turtle account.
-
Common musk turtle (Sternotherus odoratus)
Common musk turtles are small aquatic turtles sometimes considered more manageable than larger species. They are also called “stinkpots” because they can release a strong odor when frightened, so gentle, limited handling is sensible.

They still need a real aquatic setup: clean heated water, UVB, a secure enclosure, basking access, and filtration. They are not suitable for a bowl, decorative container, or unfiltered aquarium. See the VCA aquatic-turtle guide.
-
Map turtle (Graptemys species)
Map turtles have patterned shells resembling contour lines on a map. The group includes multiple species, and care requirements and legal status can vary. Water quality, basking, filtration, and adequate swimming space deserve particular attention.
Map turtles are listed in CITES Appendix III, and state protections differ. Confirm the exact species, applicable rules, and source documentation before purchase; a seller who cannot identify the animal beyond “map turtle” is not providing enough information for a responsible decision. See the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service listing information.
-
African sideneck turtle (Pelomedusa and Pelusios species)
“African sideneck” is a trade label covering several species, so the scientific name matters. These semi-aquatic turtles generally need a large aquatic enclosure, powerful filtration, a dry basking site, heat, and UVB.

-
Russian tortoise (Testudo horsfieldii)
Russian tortoises are terrestrial tortoises, not swimming turtles. They are relatively hardy when properly housed and are known for digging, but they still require a large floor area, deep substrate, UVB, heat, and a high-fiber herbivorous diet.
A secure outdoor enclosure can provide natural sunlight when weather and local conditions are appropriate. Indoor housing must still offer room to move and a proper basking and temperature gradient. Russian tortoises may live 50 years or more. See the ReptiFiles Russian tortoise care sheet.
-
Red-footed tortoise (Chelonoidis carbonaria)
Red-footed tortoises have reddish scales on the legs and head and can be striking pets for keepers able to provide a warm, humid environment. They need UVB, heat, considerable floor space, and a varied plant-based diet.

They often require more humidity and room than new owners expect. A small indoor enclosure may be useful for a juvenile, but it is not a lifelong plan. See the ReptiFiles turtle and tortoise care sheets.
-
Greek tortoise (Testudo graeca)
Greek tortoise is a common name for several subspecies and localities, which can have different care requirements. Ask for the exact subspecies or locality whenever possible.
With proper lighting, heat, floor space, diet, and species-appropriate humidity, a Greek tortoise can suit an experienced keeper. It remains a decades-long commitment, not a small pet that can live permanently in a compact terrarium. See the VCA tortoise-care guide.
What every prospective turtle owner should know
Turtles are specialized pets, not easy pets
Aquatic turtles need much more than a small aquarium. Their habitat must provide swimming space, a dry basking area, UVB exposure, appropriate heating, treated water, and filtration. The enclosure also has to support the adult animal, not just the hatchling commonly displayed for sale.
Recommended Free Tools
The often-repeated “10 gallons per inch of turtle” rule is not a complete housing specification. Even when used as a rough starting point, it does not account for swimming depth, land area, basking access, filtration capacity, or adult-size planning. See the ReptiFiles painted turtle care sheet.
UVB and heat are essential
Indoor turtles and tortoises generally need species-appropriate UVB and heat so they can bask, thermoregulate, and use calcium properly. Feeding commercial pellets does not replace UVB. Outdoor housing may provide natural UVB only when the enclosure receives safe, unfiltered sunlight and also offers shade, shelter, and protection from predators and overheating.
Expect a commitment measured in decades
Painted turtles may live 30 to 40 years, captive pond sliders have been documented living more than 40 years, and Russian tortoises may live 50 years or more with proper care. Consider who will care for the animal if you move, lose access to housing, or can no longer afford equipment and veterinary treatment.
Salmonella applies to turtles of every size
Turtles can carry Salmonella even when they look clean and healthy. Wash your hands after touching the turtle, its food, enclosure, water, or equipment. The FDA advises keeping reptiles away from children under 5, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems. Clean habitats outdoors whenever possible, rather than in a kitchen sink or food-preparation area. See the CDC guidance on reptiles and amphibians and FDA guidance on pet turtles and germs.

Check laws before buying
In the United States, federal regulations prohibit the commercial sale or distribution of live turtles with a carapace—the upper shell—shorter than 4 inches, except for limited scientific, educational, or exhibition purposes. This federal rule has been in effect since 1975. See 21 CFR § 1240.62.
That does not mean a turtle larger than 4 inches is automatically legal. State and local laws may be stricter. Arkansas, for example, has a six-inch rule, and several states restrict or prohibit the sale of turtles below four inches. Check current rules where you live, along with permit, possession, import, or species-specific requirements. See the CDC menu of state turtle-associated salmonellosis laws.
Choose captive-bred or rescued animals
Never collect a wild turtle for a pet. Native box turtles, map turtles, spotted turtles, wood turtles, and other species may be protected by state or federal law, CITES, or both. Removing them can damage wild populations and contribute to illegal trade.
Look for a reputable captive-bred source, established reptile rescue, or animal shelter. Ask for the scientific name, origin, approximate age, health records, and feeding history. “Captive-bred” does not mean Salmonella-free. See the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service discussion of turtle trafficking.

How to choose among these turtles
| If you want… | Consider researching… | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| A small aquatic turtle | Common musk or razorback musk turtle | Small does not mean simple; both need heated, filtered water, UVB, and basking access. |
| A familiar, widely available aquatic species | Red-eared slider, yellow-bellied slider, or painted turtle | Plan for a large adult enclosure and decades of care. |
| A land-dwelling turtle | Eastern, three-toed, ornate, or another legally sourced box turtle | They need terrestrial housing, humidity, UVB, and shallow water—not an aquarium. |
| A tortoise | Russian, red-footed, or Greek tortoise | Research adult floor space, climate, diet, and lifespan before purchase. |
Basic preparation checklist
- Identify the animal by scientific name and check federal, state, and local rules.
- Confirm the adult size and expected lifespan, not just the juvenile size.
- Set up the enclosure completely before bringing the animal home.
- Test temperatures, humidity, UVB placement, water quality, and filtration.
- Find a veterinarian experienced with reptiles.
- Plan safe cleaning and handwashing procedures to reduce Salmonella risk.
- Have a rehoming plan in case your housing, finances, or circumstances change.
FAQ
What is the easiest turtle to keep as a pet?
There is no genuinely easy turtle. Common musk turtles and some Russian tortoises may be more manageable than large aquatic turtles in certain homes, but they still require specialized enclosures, lighting, heat, diet, veterinary care, and long-term planning.
Can a turtle live in a 10-gallon tank?
A 10-gallon tank may be temporary housing for a very small juvenile in some setups, but it is not a lifelong enclosure for common adult aquatic turtles. Adult size, swimming depth, basking space, and filtration must determine the habitat.
Do pet turtles need UVB lighting?
Typically, yes. Indoor turtles and tortoises need species-appropriate UVB and heat for basking and normal calcium use. Natural sunlight can provide UVB outdoors only when it is unfiltered and the enclosure also provides shade and protection.

Handle turtles only when necessary and wash your hands afterward. Any turtle can carry Salmonella, including one that looks healthy and one obtained from a captive-bred source. Keep reptiles away from children under 5, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems.
The Bottom Line
The best pet turtle is not the smallest or most colorful animal available—it is the species whose adult habitat, diet, lighting, legal requirements, lifespan, and veterinary needs you can meet for decades. Buy or adopt responsibly, never take a wild turtle, and never release a pet into the environment.
