The institutions describe their goals and resources, but the available information does not establish how many plants have been propagated, planted, or survived.
Why Kerala matters for rare-plant conservation
Kerala lies along the Western Ghats, a region with distinctive habitats and many plants found nowhere else. The Kerala Forest Department’s Endemics of Kerala page identifies three main areas for endemic plants:
- Agasthyamala
- Anamalai–High Ranges
- Silent Valley–Wayanad
The department’s page, dated April 23, 2024, reports nearly 190 endemic plant species in Agasthyamala. It also says recent surveys unearthed 35 plant species there, but the page does not specify the survey dates. These are figures reported by the department, not results of a newly conducted statewide census.
Which rare plants does the Forest Department identify?
In its discussion of the Anamalai and High Ranges, the Kerala Forest Department names Anaphalis barnesii, Begonia aliciae, and some Impatiens species as examples facing critical endangerment or possible extinction. The page does not give individual assessment dates or population estimates for these examples, so its wording should not be treated as a current, independently verified conservation category for each species.

There is no single, current, harmonized statewide total for Kerala’s threatened plants established by the sources cited here. A KFRI Research Report No. 556 extract gives figures of 4,078 indigenous flowering plants in Kerala, 1,568 endemic to the Western Ghats, and 553 under threat categories, drawing on earlier literature. Those report-context figures are not a current statewide census and should not be directly compared with the Forest Department’s regional endemic-plant figures. The report is available from KFRI.
How the Green Kerala Initiative aims to help
The Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSTE) describes the Green Kerala Initiative as a programme implemented through KSCSTE-KFRI, Jawaharlal Nehru Tropical Botanic Garden and Research Institute, and KSCSTE-Malabar Botanical Garden and Institute for Plant Sciences.

KSCSTE states that the initiative aims to identify and propagate tree species listed in the IUCN Red List, emphasizing threatened endemic species of Peninsular India, particularly those native to Kerala. Its stated plan is to raise plants for planting in forested and degraded lands, sacred groves, educational campuses, and public parks. These are programme objectives; KSCSTE’s page does not report how many plants have been raised or planted, or how many survived. Read the programme description on the Green Kerala Initiative page.
What research institutes and collections contribute
KFRI’s institutional profile describes it as a multidisciplinary research centre for tropical forests and forestry, and lists a Kerala Forest Seed Centre among its facilities. Its collections and interpretations page describes a germplasm bank containing bamboos, reeds, canes, palms, medicinal plants, orchids, and elite teak clones, as well as a herbarium of Kerala plants.

Seed, germplasm, and herbarium resources can support research and conservation work, including the study and safeguarding of plant material. Their existence does not mean every collection is part of a threatened-species recovery programme. KSCSTE’s KFRI profile provides further institutional context.

The official pages describe Kerala’s endemic-plant regions, identify examples of plants of conservation concern, and set out institutional objectives for propagation and planting. They do not provide a harmonized, up-to-date statewide threatened-plant total or an outcome report showing propagation numbers, planting survival, or species recovery. That distinction matters: a stated conservation plan is evidence of intended work, not proof that a species has been brought back from the brink.
