On June 2, 2026, animal-welfare organizations announced plans to transfer 135 more beagles from Ridglan Farms, a breeding and research facility in Blue Mounds, Wisconsin. That announcement described a transfer expected that week, not a confirmed completion. The Dane County Sheriff’s Office later reported that the facility’s final beagles left in August 2026, ending its operations.
What the June 2 announcement said
The 135 dogs were part of a larger relocation effort. ABC News reported that the additional group would bring the reported cumulative total to 1,635 beagles, after 1,500 had already been moved. ABC News said 67 dogs were expected to go to Big Dog Ranch Rescue, with the others going to Beagle Freedom Project. The Center for a Humane Economy’s June 2 announcement described 68 dogs going into its care and that of rescue partners, and 67 going to Big Dog Ranch Rescue. The Center named itself, Big Dog Ranch Rescue, Beagle Freedom Project, Dane County Humane Society, Wisconsin Puppy Mill Project, and Wisconsin Federated Humane Societies among the organizations coordinating care and rehoming work. The June 2 release also quoted Center president Wayne Pacelle describing the dogs as bred for invasive laboratory tests; that is his characterization, not a court finding.

How the effort ended
The June transfer was followed by a separate agreement covering 475 remaining beagles. The Associated Press reported on June 15, 2026, that Big Dog Ranch Rescue had reached an agreement for the dogs’ transfer and Ridglan Farms’ permanent closure. Associated Press
The Dane County Sheriff’s Office later reported that the final group left the facility in August 2026 and that Ridglan’s operations ended. What the legal developments do—and do not—mean
The Sheriff’s Office says a special prosecutor investigated alleged violations of Wisconsin animal-cruelty laws and that Ridglan Farms reached a settlement. Under it, the farm agreed to surrender its state license to sell dogs effective July 1, 2026. The later agreement concerning the remaining dogs and facility closure was a separate development. Neither should be described as a criminal conviction.

Can people adopt or foster one of these beagles now?
The announcements identify organizations involved in the relocation, but the available accounts do not provide a current, rescue-by-rescue adoption inventory or confirm that any of these particular dogs are available. The Wisconsin Humane Society said in May 2026 that the Ridglan beagles then needing foster care had placements arranged; that dated update does not establish current availability.
