Mars describes the 2026 edition as the campaign’s third year and says it will expand to more than 30 countries. For historical context, Mars’s 2024 sustainability report says the first global edition operated in 12 countries, and more than 850 pets found homes in the United States during that event. Those are past results, not projections for 2026. Mars’s 2026 announcement and its adoption hub describe the campaign; the 2024 sustainability report gives historical context.

How to find a participating shelter
- Open the Mars Global Adoption Weekend hub. Use its shelter-finding option to look for local adoption opportunities and preparation resources.
- Confirm details directly with the shelter. Ask whether it is participating, when its events take place, and whether adoption, volunteering, or fundraising activities are available. Local offers and schedules are set locally.
- Check the shelter’s own adoption information. Ask about the animal’s known medical history, behavior, and care needs, as well as the shelter’s adoption process and any information it cannot confirm.
The Mars hub also links to Waltham dog and cat care guides and Adopt a Pet. Mars describes Adopt a Pet as a free adoption site serving 15,000 shelters and rescues in the United States and Canada; that participation figure is Mars’s description, not an independently verified current count.

Preparing to adopt: questions to ask
Mars’s adoption resources focus on three areas that can help adopters make an informed decision. A shelter may not know every detail or be able to predict how an animal will settle into a home, so treat answers as useful background rather than guarantees.
Medical history and care needs
Ask what is known about the animal’s health, veterinary care, and ongoing needs. Find out whether the shelter has records or recommendations to share, and what follow-up care may be appropriate.

- Calling all animal lovers!
- Build your own mobile pet adoption center and help these clay critters find their "furever" homes.
- You decide which animals you want to make with colorful clay and premade eyes to help make each creation picture-purrfect.
Behavior and temperament
Ask what the shelter has observed about the animal’s behavior, including any known needs or challenges. Discuss how the animal responds to people, other animals, handling, or situations relevant to your household, while recognizing that behavior can change in a new setting.
Fit with your household and routine
Consider your living circumstances, daily schedule, and the people and animals already at home. Ask the shelter which aspects of the animal’s needs might be especially relevant to your situation; compatibility cannot be guaranteed in advance.
