These 14 dog house ideas cover everything from a basic A-frame to an insulated, wheeled shelter. They are not all beginner blueprints: some are video builds or design concepts, while others require a table saw, pocket-hole jig, roofing tools, or careful insulation work.

Choose the design according to your dog’s size, your climate, and your building experience. Every outdoor house should let your dog stand, turn around, and lie down comfortably without leaving so much unused space that the shelter becomes difficult to warm.

Before choosing a dog house plan

Measure your dog while standing and lying down. The finished interior should be large enough for normal movement, but not oversized. A very large shelter can lose heat quickly in cold weather.

For an outdoor shelter, plan for more than four walls and a roof:

Bifanuo Outdoor Indoor Dog House for Small & Medium Dogs - Weatherproof Shelter with Elevated Floor, Hidden Vents & Tool-Free Assembly (Classic Grey, 26" L x 23.6" W x 25.8" H)
  • ✅ Ideal Size & Indoor-Outdoor Versatility: 26.''L × 23.6''W × 25.8'' size offers ample space for small-medium dogs to rest freely. Perfect for living rooms, balconies (indoor) and yards, porches (outdoor), providing flexible comfort.
  • ✅ Sturdy PP Material: High-quality PP material ensures sturdiness and scratch resistance for long-term use. Surface allows easy cleaning with a damp cloth or water rinse, saving hassle.
  • ✅ Elevated Floor for Year-Round Comfort: Elevated design keeps the house away from cold, damp ground. Prevents moisture seepage, maintains dry interior, and locks warmth, ensuring pet coziness all year.
  • ✅ Hidden Vents for Fresh Air: Built-in hidden vents boost air circulation without compromising waterproof/warm-keeping. Avoids stuffiness in summer, maintains a fresh, healthy environment for pets.
  • ✅ Tool-Free Quick Assembly: No professional tools needed. Comes with detailed instructions and full accessories, enabling easy assembly in minutes, letting pets enjoy the new home soon.
  • Raise the floor on a 2×4 base, blocks, or another stable support so it is not sitting directly on wet ground.
  • Protect the entrance from prevailing wind, rain, and snow with placement, an overhang, or a flexible door flap.
  • In cold climates, insulate the floor, walls, and roof. Enclose every piece of insulation so a chewing dog cannot reach it.
  • Use an exterior-rated roof covering and seal exposed joints against rain.
  • Use dry straw for outdoor winter bedding. Towels and blankets can absorb moisture and freeze.

A dog house is not a substitute for bringing a dog indoors during dangerous weather. Puppies, senior dogs, short-coated breeds, underweight dogs, and dogs with medical conditions may not tolerate cold or heat well even in a well-built shelter.

14 free DIY dog house plans and ideas

1. Insulated dog house

Best for: Cold climates and experienced DIY builders.

An insulated design is the most practical starting point for a dog that spends supervised time outdoors in chilly weather. Build a wall, roof, and floor cavity, then cover the insulation with plywood or another chew-resistant interior lining. Waterproof the exterior carefully so insulation does not become damp.

This is a difficult project rather than a quick beginner build. It involves multiple layers, accurate framing, and enough carpentry work to make the house heavy. Never leave fiberglass, rigid foam, wool, or similar material exposed where a dog can chew it.

2. Lowe’s beginner basic dog house

Best for: A first conventional dog house when you have basic saw and measuring skills.

Lowe’s illustrated dog house plan is a classic rectangular shelter designed for an average-size dog. Its dimensions can be scaled up or down, making it more useful than a fixed “one size fits all” plan.

The materials include dimensional lumber, exterior siding, roofing materials, and shingles. You may need a circular saw, table saw, hammer or nail gun, and measuring tools. The large entrance is convenient in mild weather but may need a flap or wind-blocking arrangement in winter.

3. Dog house with a deck

Best for: Medium dogs and owners who want an attached lounging area.

This design combines an insulated sleeping box with a small deck. It gives a dog a dry place to rest outside the enclosed space, but the deck adds material, weight, and construction time. Assemble it close to its final location: once completed, it may be difficult to move.

Build the deck so it drains rather than holding puddles, and keep the sleeping area elevated. Treat the roof and wall seams as weatherproofing points, not just cosmetic details.

  • Easy Assembly: No tools or screws needed—simply follow the instructions to set up the spacious, portable large dog house in under 10 minutes. Easily clean it with a damp cloth or rinse with water and let it air dry

4. Reclaimed-pallet dog house

Best for: Resourceful builders who can inspect and prepare reclaimed wood.

Pallet boards can reduce the cost of a simple shelter, but “free” does not mean ready to use. Remove every nail and staple, reject boards with oil, chemical, mold, or unknown contamination, and sand away splinters and rough edges. Pallets also vary in thickness and condition, so the finished dimensions may not match a published sketch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Line the interior with smooth, exterior-suitable panels if the pallet surfaces remain rough. Do not use damaged boards simply to avoid buying replacements.

5. Large dog house with a porch

Best for: Large breeds and experienced builders with plenty of workspace.

A full-size porch house provides a generous covered entrance and can look like a miniature human home. The trade-off is substantial weight and a long build. The cited build reportedly took about 30 hours, so this is not a weekend project for every household.

Check door, floor, and roof dimensions against your dog before cutting. Large structures also need a properly supported base; a floor that sags or sits on damp soil will quickly become uncomfortable and unsanitary.

6. Mini ranch dog house

Best for: Small-to-medium dogs and builders who want a decorative roofline.

The mini ranch style uses a metal roof, roof overhang, plywood, lattice, and metal edging. The overhang helps keep precipitation away from the entrance, while the ranch profile gives the house more visual character than a plain box.

Metal roofing can become hot in direct sun, so place the house in shade or add an insulated roof assembly. Cover sharp metal edges and check them again after installation.

7. Crooked dog house

Best for: Experienced DIYers who enjoy unusual geometry.

Metal Dog House for Large Dogs, Durable Waterproof Dog Kennel with Steel Frame, Removable Floor, Easy to Assemble(Grey, 35.8''L×39.7''W×33.3''H)
  • Windproof structural design: Our dog house has a floor at the bottom. The design of the raised floor can prevent dirty water from flowing into the house, prevent the house from deforming or leaking due to accumulated water, and prevent pet paws from feeling uncomfortable on frozen or burnt floors.
  • All Weather protection: Our outdoor metal dog house is built with waterproof and UV resistant materials, making it a reliable outdoor dog house that provides rain, sun, and wind protection for pets throughout the year.
  • Overall dimensions: 39.7 inches long x 35.8 inches wide x 33.3 inches high, providing 9.8 square feet of spacious interior space for your pet to relax comfortably.
  • Easy to install and clean: This dog house has a clean and modern appearance, providing ample space for your pets to stand, turn around, and relax. Our dog house is designed for quick and easy assembly, so you can get your puppy ready in about 30 minutes.

This irregular design deliberately uses nonparallel lines and angled trim. It can make an attractive shelter, but the unusual shape creates more opportunities for inaccurate cuts, gaps, and leaks.

Do not choose it as your first project unless you are comfortable making a full-size cutting template and checking each piece before fastening it. A crooked appearance is acceptable; a crooked roof seam that admits water is not.

8. Portable dog house

Best for: Large dogs, multiple small dogs, or people who need to reposition the shelter.

A wheeled, insulated dog house is useful when the structure must move between shade and sun or around a yard. It also tends to be heavy. Use locking casters or another method that prevents the house from rolling when your dog enters or exits.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

As with any insulated build, cover the insulation on the inside. Inspect wheels, handles, and fasteners regularly: moving parts create failure points that a stationary dog house does not have.

9. Log-cabin dog house

Best for: Builders who want a rustic appearance and repetitive construction.

Overlapping boards create a log-cabin look and can make the wall assembly relatively straightforward. However, the cited version includes a stone floor and a wide entry, both of which are less suitable for cold weather without modification.

Use a raised, insulated floor and reduce or protect the opening if the house will be used in winter. A rustic exterior does not automatically provide good thermal performance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

10. Modern dog house

Best for: Intermediate or advanced builders who want a contemporary shelter.

This design uses clean lines, with Plexiglas and optional sheet-metal roofing. Transparent panels can add light, but they also require accurate drilling and careful handling to avoid cracks. Sheet metal must be folded, fastened, and trimmed without leaving sharp edges.

The large doorway is a winter weakness. Add a flap or sheltered entry, and do not assume that a modern-looking house is weatherproof until you have sealed its joints and tested it in rain.

11. A-frame dog house

Best for: A simple sloped-roof structure for a medium or large dog.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An A-frame has fewer complicated wall joints than many bungalow-style designs and sheds rain effectively when the roof is properly covered. One version uses pressure-treated lumber for the base.

Keep pressure-treated material away from areas your dog can chew. If the base is accessible, cover it with a safe floor layer or choose an appropriate untreated, exterior-rated material instead. Confirm that the triangular interior still gives your dog enough usable headroom and floor space.

12. A-frame dog house under $75

Best for: Small-to-medium dogs and budget-conscious builders.

This low-cost A-frame includes insulation and shingles, but the cited version does not include a floor. That omission matters: placing the house directly on soil or concrete can create dampness and heat loss.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Add a raised floor before treating the plan as an outdoor shelter. Also price the complete project, including screws, roofing, sealant, floor materials, and paint; a nominal materials budget can change when these safety and weatherproofing items are added.

13. Contemporary dog house

Best for: Advanced builders who want a spacious, customizable bungalow.

The contemporary design offers more room and a polished appearance, but it depends on precise cuts and Plexiglas work. It is labor-intensive and better suited to someone who already knows how to frame, fasten, seal, and finish exterior projects.

Make a cardboard or scrap-wood mock-up of the interior before committing to expensive panels. This helps reveal whether the doorway, sleeping area, and roof height work for your particular dog.

14. Primitive or rustic dog house

Best for: Visual inspiration and builders comfortable verifying measurements themselves.

The cited rustic build is presented as a YouTube project rather than a conventional printable blueprint. Treat it as a construction idea, not as a measured plan. Watch the entire build, write down dimensions, and adapt the structure to your dog before buying materials.

Video projects can skip details that matter in real use, such as floor elevation, interior lining, roof ventilation, or fastener placement. Add those details yourself rather than copying only the appearance.

Reliable plan sources to check

Source What it provides Important limitation
Lowe’s Illustrated instructions for an average-size dog; dimensions can be adjusted. It still requires several power tools and should be resized for your dog.
Kreg Tool Moderate-difficulty porch plan with materials list, cut list, and numbered directions. It calls for tools and hardware such as pocket-hole screws and a pocket-hole jig.
This Old House / House One Free plans and a downloadable cut list. Designed for a small cat or dog under two feet wide, not a universal dog house.
Alberta SPCA Downloadable medium- and large-breed guidelines with materials lists. The dimensions are guidelines and should be adjusted for the individual dog.
Habitat for Humanity Free printable plan with illustrated construction steps. Review the dimensions and modify the plan for your dog and local weather.

Building and finishing checklist

  1. Confirm the interior size. Your dog should stand, turn around, and lie down comfortably.
  2. Make a full cut list. Account for wall thickness, roof overhangs, floor height, and the opening before purchasing lumber.
  3. Choose safe materials. Use exterior-rated boards and fasteners. Avoid sharp edges, splinters, exposed insulation, and reachable treated wood.
  4. Raise the floor. A 2×4 frame or blocks can separate the sleeping area from wet ground.
  5. Weatherproof the shell. Seal joints, cover the roof, and paint or finish only after checking that the products are suitable for the application and fully cured.
  6. Protect the entrance. Add a flap or orient the opening away from prevailing weather, especially in cold climates.
  7. Inspect it regularly. Look for leaks, loose nails, chewed insulation, rotting boards, damp bedding, and unstable supports.

Which plan is easiest?

The Lowe’s basic house and a straightforward A-frame are the most approachable choices for a first-time builder. A pallet house can also be simple after the wood has been properly inspected and prepared, but reclaimed materials make dimensions and quality less predictable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The insulated, decked, portable, modern, crooked, and contemporary designs are better treated as intermediate or advanced projects. The rustic video build may look simple, but its lack of a conventional cut list means you must do more measuring and verification yourself.

FAQ

What size should a DIY dog house be?

It should be large enough for your dog to stand, turn around, and lie down comfortably, but not unnecessarily large. Measure your dog and adjust the chosen plan rather than treating any published dimensions as universal.

Should a dog house have insulation?

For cold-weather outdoor use, insulate the walls, roof, and floor, then fully enclose the insulation so the dog cannot chew it. Insulation does not make outdoor living safe in every weather condition or for every dog.

Is pressure-treated wood safe for a dog house?

Do not leave pressure-treated wood in a place your dog can chew. Some plans use it for a base, but cover or replace accessible treated components and eliminate splinters and exposed edges.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I put inside an outdoor dog house in winter?

Use clean, dry straw that can be replaced when damp. Towels and blankets may absorb moisture and freeze. Keep the entrance protected and bring the dog indoors during dangerously cold weather.

The Bottom Line

The best DIY dog house is the one sized for your dog, raised off the ground, weatherproofed, and realistic for your tools and experience. Start with a basic Lowe’s-style box or A-frame if you are new to construction; choose an insulated or more elaborate design only when you can safely enclose the insulation, support the structure, and protect it from local weather.
