8. Irish Setter
The Irish Setter is a dynamic hunting dog with a flowing red coat. AKC describes it as playful, affectionate, mischievous, and independent.
That independent streak is a practical consideration for training. Think about whether your family can provide consistent engagement and ask about the temperament and energy of the dog you are considering.

How to choose among them
Match the dog to your real routine
Compare your daily schedule, experience, and outdoor opportunities with a dog’s activity and training needs. AKC notes that pointing dogs may range well away from handlers while responding to commands, so consider how you will build skills and manage outdoor exploration.
- Assess your daily engagement: Decide how much time your household can realistically devote to activity, training, and companionship.
- Consider size and strength: Think about whether family members can safely manage a strong, athletic dog.
- Plan for training: Account for the work needed to teach skills and manage independence around distractions.
- Check coat expectations: Ask about grooming and shedding for the particular breed and individual dog.
- Meet individual dogs: Ask responsible breeders or rescues about temperament, energy, and the dog’s history.
There is no single best pointer breed for every active family. Compare the individual dogs’ needs and the work involved rather than treating breed descriptions as guarantees.
Think beyond coat type
Coat texture and shedding vary across the group. The Wirehaired Pointing Griffon is described by AKC as low-shedding, while setters such as the English Setter and Irish Setter have more prominent coats. Ask knowledgeable breeders or rescues what care an individual dog’s coat requires; do not assume that any coat guarantees an allergy-friendly fit.

Useful outlets
- Scent work: Ask whether structured scent activities are a suitable way to engage a dog’s working instincts.
- Retrieving: Many pointing dogs retrieve; choose activities appropriate to the individual dog and its training.
- Dog sports: AKC describes the German Wirehaired Pointer as fond of dog sports, and several breeds have a history of field work.
- Field activities: Hunt tests and field trials are potential outlets for a Pointer, according to AKC.
- Positive training: AKC’s GSP profile highlights positive training. Consider a qualified trainer familiar with sporting dogs.
Recall practice and outdoor management
Pointing dogs may range away from their handlers, and wildlife or scents can distract them. AKC describes responsiveness to commands as part of their work, but no training aid alone makes off-leash activity safe.
A long-line leash for recall practice can be one option for supervised training; it is an editorial suggestion, not an AKC endorsement of a product. Build skills in an appropriate setting, manage the line carefully, and follow local rules. Do not let a dog approach people or animals without control and consent.
Children and family safety
No breed description guarantees that an individual dog will be safe or patient with children. The United Kennel Club’s English Pointer standard describes the Pointer as particularly good with children, but that statement applies to the breed standard, not every dog.
Consider a dog’s individual temperament, training, socialization, health, and the household’s ability to supervise interactions. Ask a responsible breeder or rescue direct questions about the dog’s behavior and suitability for your family.
