Prepare your Dachshund gradually, make the first meeting quiet and voluntary, and supervise every interaction. Give your dog a retreat the baby cannot enter, and create distance if you notice signs of stress. Breed alone cannot predict how an individual dog will respond to a newborn.
Why preparation matters more than breed
Dachshunds are often described as alert and bold, but that broad breed description does not tell you how your dog will react to an infant. Focus on your dog’s health, past behavior, comfort with change, and ability to settle. The American Kennel Club’s Dachshund overview is a general breed profile, not a guide to predicting behavior around a baby.
Plan the household setup before the baby arrives. New sounds, equipment, room boundaries, and changes to your routine are easier to introduce gradually than all at once.
Prepare your dog before the baby arrives
Set boundaries and introduce baby-related changes gradually
- Decide whether your dog may enter the nursery. If access will be restricted, teach that boundary in advance with a closed door or a tall gate.
- Let your dog investigate baby equipment and become familiar with new sights, sounds, and smells at a comfortable pace. Pair these experiences with attention or rewards.
- If you use recordings of baby sounds and your dog seems worried, start at a very low volume and increase it gradually only while the dog remains comfortable.
The ASPCA’s Dogs and Babies guidance recommends preparing dogs for changes in the home and introducing baby-related sights and sounds. Rehearsing with a doll may help you practice carrying the baby and managing the dog, but it cannot predict or guarantee your dog’s response to a real newborn.

Practice useful cues and calm settling
Rehearse simple behaviors you can use while caring for the baby, such as sitting, staying, moving away, or going to a bed or mat. The AKC describes teaching a “place” cue by guiding a dog to a bed or mat and rewarding the dog for settling there. Practice when the home is calm, so the behavior is familiar before you need it.
Choose a dog-only resting place before the baby comes home. Depending on your dog and home, this could be a bed, crate, or gated area. Make it a comfortable place where the dog can rest without being approached or disturbed.

Get help with health or behavior concerns
If your dog has chronic pain, another health issue, or a history of concerning behavior, talk with your veterinarian before the baby arrives. A qualified trainer or behavior professional can help you plan changes and practice safely. The ASPCA recommends veterinary evaluation when a condition could affect a dog’s behavior around a child.
Plan a controlled first meeting
- Arrange another adult to help. One adult can attend to the baby while the other manages the dog.
- Let the dog greet returning family members first. Give your dog time to settle before bringing the baby into the interaction.
- Choose a quiet setting. Use a leash if appropriate for your dog, keep the first interaction brief, and have rewards ready.
- Allow a voluntary approach. Let the dog decide whether to come closer; do not force the dog to sniff, touch, or stay near the baby.
- Reward calm behavior and watch body language. If your dog looks worried, calmly increase the distance and try again another time rather than pressing the interaction.
The AKC’s guidance on introducing a dog to a baby supports gradual, supervised introductions that give the dog room to adjust. The aim is not to make the dog interact, but to help the dog remain comfortable in the baby’s presence.

Use supervision, barriers, and a dog-only retreat
Never leave a baby alone with a dog, even if the dog has always seemed gentle. An adult should be close enough to actively supervise and intervene. A gate, crate, or bed can help organize the space, but none replaces supervision.
Keep the dog’s retreat inaccessible to the baby, and make sure the dog can leave an interaction rather than being cornered. A baby gate can restrict nursery access or separate areas; choose and place barriers so they reliably prevent the baby from reaching the dog’s resting space. A crate is an option only if it is already an appropriate, comfortable place for your dog. Beds and mats can also provide a settling spot.

As the baby becomes mobile, reassess the setup. Crawling, grabbing, pulling, and sudden noises can change how an interaction feels to the dog. Adults should prevent the child from grabbing or cornering the dog and should maintain the dog’s ability to move away. The AKC’s baby-safety guidance emphasizes supervision and safe separation as children grow.

Pair predictable baby-care moments with a calm activity for the dog. For example, reward your dog for settling on a mat while you feed or nurse the baby, or offer an appropriate chew in the dog’s retreat. Food puzzles and treats may also help support a quiet routine if they suit your dog.

The ASPCA recommends rewarding a dog for settling during feeding or nursing routines. Keep any food or chew activity in a place where the baby cannot reach it, and do not use it to lure the dog into an interaction. These aids can support a routine; they do not make unsupervised contact safe.
Recognize stress and respond without punishment
Stress can be subtle. The AKC lists signs that may include lip licking, yawning, turning away, a furrowed brow, or ears held low. These signals do not by themselves diagnose a problem, but they are a reason to give the dog more space and reduce pressure.
If you see signs of concern, calmly separate the dog and baby and let the dog retreat. Do not punish growling or other warning behavior. The AKC cautions that corrections can make matters worse when fear or anxiety is driving the behavior. If worrying behavior persists or recurs, consult your veterinarian or a qualified behavior professional.
