A small dog can have a surprisingly large personality. The right name should be pleasant to say across a busy park, distinct from everyday commands, and short enough to use repeatedly during training. The 145 ideas below include sweet, spirited, elegant, food-inspired, nature-themed, and genuinely unusual options.
“Small dog” is a broad description, not a formal breed group: small breeds appear in several AKC groups, while the Toy Group is only one category. A little dog may be delicate in size but energetic, athletic, vocal, clever, or determined, so choose a name that fits the individual dog rather than assuming every small dog is quiet or low-maintenance.

How to choose the best name
Say it in real situations
Call the name from the back door, say it in a quiet room, and imagine using it at the veterinarian’s office or dog park. A name that looks clever on paper may be awkward to repeat in public. AKC guidance favors names that are easy to say and easy for the dog to hear; one or two syllables are commonly recommended as practical trainer guidance, not as an absolute rule.

Keep it separate from cues
Names that sound like commands can slow communication. Examples include Kit and “sit,” Moe or Joe and “no,” Shea and “stay,” and Nolan and “no.” Also avoid a name that sounds too much like a family member’s name or another pet’s name.
Hard consonants and a final vowel sound may make a name easier to call, according to AKC’s naming suggestions, but there is no sound pattern that guarantees faster learning. Choose clarity and consistency over a supposed perfect formula.

Match the name to the dog—but do not feel obliged to
Coat, breed heritage, size, and personality can all inspire a name. A bold Chihuahua might suit Tank, a quiet Maltese might suit Pearl, and a lively mixed-breed dog might be a perfect Sprout. But a name does not have to describe your dog’s sex, appearance, or breed. Choose the one your household will enjoy using for years.
How to teach a small dog its name
- Choose one final call name and make sure everyone in the home uses the same pronunciation.
- In a quiet room, say the name once in a friendly voice.
- When your dog looks toward you, immediately offer praise, attention, or a small treat.
- Repeat in brief sessions, then practice in slightly busier settings as your dog succeeds.
- Stop and reduce the distraction if your dog cannot respond. Repeating the name over and over can teach the dog to wait for several repetitions.
Think of the name primarily as an attention cue. You do not need to say it before every instruction: your dog should also learn to respond directly to cues such as “sit,” “stay,” and “down.” Avoid using the name mainly before scolding, since negative associations can make the dog less willing to orient toward it. The same positive, consistent approach can teach a new name to an adult rescue dog.

Small dog, not small needs
A petite dog still needs training, socialization, exercise appropriate to its health and breed, and enrichment. Toy dogs can learn obedience, tricks, agility, scent work, and other activities. Their size does call for extra safety planning: supervise stairs, prevent rough play with much larger dogs, and do not let unfamiliar people pick them up without permission.
If you are looking for names described as popular, remember that popularity lists depend on their source. For example, AKC’s 2025 examples—such as Gus, Willow, Bear, Maggie, Duke, Maverick, Penny, Nova, Charlie, Sadie, and Finn—come from AKC purebred registrations and Canine Partner mixed-breed enrollment, not a census of every U.S. dog or small dogs specifically.

FAQ
What is a good name for a very small dog?
Bean, Pip, Button, Mochi, Pixie, Dot, and Sprout are short, easy-to-call options. The best choice is one that sounds distinct from the commands and names used in your household.
Should a small dog’s name be one syllable?
Not necessarily. One- or two-syllable names are commonly recommended because they are convenient to repeat during training, but longer names can work when they have a clear everyday call name, such as “Marshmallow” becoming “Mallow.”

Can I rename an adult small dog?
Yes. Say the new name once, reward your dog as soon as they look toward you, and repeat the exercise consistently. Build the habit in a quiet setting before adding distractions.
What names should I avoid for a dog?
Avoid names that sound like frequently used cues, such as Kit and “sit,” Shea and “stay,” or Moe and “no.” Names that resemble those of household members or other pets can also cause confusion.
The Bottom Line
Choose a name you can say clearly, cheerfully, and often. A small dog may be compact enough to carry, but the name should still fit a fully individual companion—one who deserves training, enrichment, and a name that remains enjoyable long after the puppy stage.
