Arizona Game and Fish describes this reintroduced bird as North America’s largest flying land bird, with a wingspan of 9.5 feet and weight of up to 25 pounds. Condors in Arizona are associated with the Vermilion Cliffs area of northern Arizona, at elevations from 2,000 to 8,000 feet.
A precise, scientifically consistent ranking of Arizona’s 15 largest flying birds is not currently supported by the available state and regional sources. The birds below are therefore a qualified field list: measurements are compared where they are available, while Arizona occurrence is identified separately as confirmed by the cited lists, seasonal or uncertain, or not established in the available evidence. That distinction matters because wingspan, body length, mass and local occurrence measure different things.

How to read this list
“Largest” can mean the widest wings, greatest body mass, greatest height or longest body. Those measures do not produce the same order. A crane may stand taller than a raptor, while a condor can carry more weight and a heron can have a different body profile altogether.

The Arizona Game and Fish Department’s 2024 master species list and the Arizona–Utah cumulative bird list identify several large-bird candidates, but neither is a size ranking. The table combines those Arizona candidates with several additional species for which the available material does not establish a comparable Arizona record or measurement. “Not stated” means no comparable figure was supplied here; it is not evidence that the bird is small.

The largest and most distinctive birds
California Condor: Arizona’s strongest answer
Arizona Game and Fish gives the California Condor a 9.5-foot wingspan and a weight of up to 25 pounds, and calls it the largest flying land bird in North America. Those figures put it well ahead of the other measured candidates in maximum mass and among the widest-winged birds a visitor can encounter in the state.
Arizona’s condors belong to a reintroduction effort centered near Vermilion Cliffs in the northern part of the state. The agency’s stated elevation range is 2,000–8,000 feet, so habitat can include deep canyon country, cliffs and high-elevation terrain rather than a single type of landscape. A very large dark bird circling on broad, nearly level wings in that region is a candidate for condor identification, but observers should use authorized viewing guidance and keep their distance.
Whooping Crane: the tallest bird, but not an established Arizona regular
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service calls the Whooping Crane North America’s tallest bird. Cornell lists a 90.2-inch wingspan and weight of 211.6–275.1 ounces; the federal species page gives the equivalent weight range as 13.2–17.2 pounds. These measurements make it one of the largest birds in the comparison, but they do not show that Whooping Cranes regularly occur in Arizona. Treat it as a size benchmark, not as proof of a dependable Arizona sighting.

Bald Eagle: broad wings and a heavy body
Cornell reports Bald Eagles at 27.9–37.8 inches long, with an 80.3-inch wingspan and a weight range of 105.8–222.2 ounces. Females are larger than males, so two birds of the same species can look noticeably different in the field.
For identification, look for the heavy body and broad wings. In soaring flight, a Bald Eagle commonly holds its wings in a flatter profile. That silhouette helps separate it from a Turkey Vulture, whose wings are typically held in a shallow V. Plumage, lighting and distance can alter the impression, so use several features rather than posture alone.
Golden Eagle: the long-winged mountain raptor
The National Park Service gives Golden Eagles a body length of 30–40 inches, an 80–88-inch wingspan and a weight of 105.8–216.1 ounces. The upper end of that wingspan overlaps the Bald Eagle’s range, while the body shape is often more elongated and aerodynamic.
In Arizona, a large eagle over open country or rugged uplands may be a Golden Eagle, but size alone is not enough for a confident identification. Note the wing shape, tail proportion, head profile and flight behavior, then check a regional field guide before assigning a species.

Sandhill Crane: a large, seasonal-looking silhouette
Cornell lists Sandhill Cranes at 47.2 inches long, 78.7 inches in wingspan and 119.9–172.8 ounces in weight. Cornell also describes them as smaller than Whooping Cranes. Their long legs and neck make them appear enormous when standing in open wetlands or agricultural fields, even though their measured wingspan is below that of the largest eagles.
Sandhill Crane is explicitly represented in the Arizona and regional lists. When several birds are together, compare their proportions: cranes look tall and long-legged, while eagles and vultures look compact in the body with broad flight surfaces.
Great Blue Heron: the largest North American heron
Audubon identifies the Great Blue Heron as North America’s largest heron and reports a wingspan of 5 feet 6 inches to 6 feet 7 inches, with a weight of 4 pounds 10 ounces to 5 pounds 8 ounces. Its height comes from long legs, neck and bill rather than the heavy mass seen in a condor or eagle.

Other large-bird candidates on Arizona lists
Turkey Vulture
Turkey Vulture appears on the Arizona master list and the regional checklist. The available material does not provide a comparable wingspan, length or weight for this article, so it should not be placed numerically above or below the measured raptors. Its shallow-V soaring posture is a practical field clue when viewed alongside a flat-winged eagle.
American White Pelican
American White Pelican is named by both the Arizona master list and the Arizona–Utah cumulative list. No matching measurement was supplied here. Its inclusion reflects documented regional bird-list treatment, not a calculated position in a statewide size ranking.
Osprey
Osprey is included on the regional checklist. Because the available evidence does not provide a measurement set or a season-by-season Arizona qualification, use a current local checklist for timing and status before treating an observation as expected.

Canada Goose
Canada Goose is also listed by Arizona Game and Fish. Without a stated measurement set in the available sources, it belongs in the candidate group rather than a precise size order.
Four additional names requiring checklist confirmation
Snow Goose, Double-crested Cormorant, Common Raven and Tundra Swan are included here as additional large-bird names that a reader may encounter when expanding an Arizona search, but the available material does not establish a comparable Arizona occurrence, seasonality or measurement for them. Do not interpret their presence in this extended list as confirmation that each is a regular Arizona bird. Verify any record against a current state or regional checklist.
How to compare size without creating a false ranking
- Start with wingspan. This is the easiest dimension to appreciate in flight, but it does not measure body mass. The measured examples range from the Great Blue Heron’s 5-foot-6-inch minimum to the California Condor’s 9.5 feet.
- Check weight ranges and units. Cornell reports several species in ounces, while agency pages may use pounds. Convert only when needed and keep the original range attached to the species; a maximum value is not the same as a typical adult.
- Use body length or height separately. The Whooping Crane’s tallest-bird distinction and the Great Blue Heron’s long-legged profile show why standing height can produce a different “largest” answer.
- Confirm Arizona status. A North American measurement page does not establish regular occurrence in Arizona. Mark each species as resident, seasonal, rare or unconfirmed only when a state or regional source supports that label.
- Record sex and age when possible. Female Bald Eagles are larger than males, and individual variation can make visual estimates unreliable.
Field identification and responsible viewing
Carry an Arizona bird field guide and record the date, habitat, approximate size and flight posture. A photograph with a known object for scale is more useful than a guess based on one distant silhouette. For soaring birds, note whether the wings are flat or held in a shallow V; for wading birds, note neck position and leg length.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDo not approach nests, roosts or cliff sites to improve a view. Condors are a conservation population, and disturbance can be harmful even when the bird appears calm. Follow posted rules and agency guidance around Vermilion Cliffs and other sensitive habitat. Binoculars or a spotting scope provide better identification evidence than moving closer.
What the evidence can—and cannot—answer
The evidence supports a clear lead: California Condor is Arizona’s largest documented flying land-bird candidate by the stated 9.5-foot wingspan and 25-pound maximum weight. It also supports meaningful comparisons for Whooping Crane, Bald Eagle, Golden Eagle, Sandhill Crane and Great Blue Heron.
It does not support a definitive statewide order from first through fifteenth. Measurements are not available for every candidate, the units and methods differ among sources, and occurrence information is not equally detailed. A careful birder should therefore use this list as a starting point for identification and verification, not as a claim that the fifteenth bird is smaller than the fourteenth.
