How to pick a name your cat can wear well

Say your favorites out loud and notice which are easy to call. A short name can be convenient in everyday use; a longer name such as Captain Cuddles or Duchess Dumpling can still work if you enjoy saying it. You can also choose by theme: food names, affectionate names, puns, or classics. Most of all, pick something that feels warm and suits your individual cat rather than making their size the whole joke.

A note about your cat’s weight

A rounded appearance or a cuddly nickname cannot tell you whether a cat is at a healthy weight. Cats Protection says an ideal weight depends on individual circumstances, age, gender, and breed; if you are unsure, it recommends asking a veterinarian for an individual assessment. Its guidance also cautions against starving a cat or sharply cutting food. Any weight-management changes should be discussed with your vet. Cats Protection also mentions feeding toys as one way to encourage natural hunting behavior, not as a treatment for excess weight. Read Cats Protection’s cat obesity guidance.
