Freely cat food is discontinued. Cats.com now labels its review archived and says the company ceased operations and ended production. That means the old ratings and nutrition information can help you assess what the recipes were like, but they are not a current buying recommendation. The former Freely dry-food collection showed no products when checked; that does not establish whether old stock is available elsewhere.
What Freely sold
Freely launched in 2020 with dry food, canned food and bone-broth toppers. The company’s launch announcement described its cat recipes as grain-free, made in the USA and built around limited, purposeful ingredients. Those are company claims from launch, not independently audited findings. Freely Pet’s 2020 launch announcement
Cats.com’s archived review lists three dry recipes—turkey, salmon and rabbit—two canned recipes—turkey and rabbit—and a broth topper. The review says the foods were intended for adult cats and formulated to meet AAFCO nutrient profiles. This is historical product information; it does not establish that a particular recipe or remaining package is suitable for a cat today. Cats.com’s archived Freely review

The reviewer says she ordered salmon dry food, rabbit wet food and a broth topper, and describes the rabbit wet food’s texture favorably. That account is a product review, not a controlled feeding trial. Customer comments quoted on the page were mixed: some reviewers said their cats accepted the food and shipping went well, while others reported refusal or alleged cross-contamination. Those individual reports are not verified quality-control findings. Cats.com’s archived Freely review

| Historical recipe | Protein | Fat | Carbohydrate | Reviewer’s interpretation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Representative rabbit dry food; Cat Food Advisor estimate, 2025 | 33.7% dry matter | 19.6% dry matter | 38.7% dry matter | Relatively low protein and high carbohydrate compared with typical dry foods; peas, lentils and pea protein noted. |
| Representative rabbit wet food; Cat Food Advisor estimate, 2025 | 45.5% dry matter | 18.2% dry matter | 28.4% dry matter | Higher protein and lower carbohydrate than typical wet cat food, with price and plant protein noted. |
These figures describe two representative historical recipes, not every Freely product. Dry-matter values should not be compared directly with an as-fed guaranteed analysis; moisture changes the apparent percentages. They also do not establish how an individual cat will digest or tolerate a food.
Was Freely recalled, and what is known about sourcing?
Cats.com and Cat Food Advisor report no known Freely recall. That wording reflects those review sources; it is not proof that every regulator or recall record was comprehensively checked. Since the line is discontinued, any safety question now concerns remaining stock and the replacement food you choose. Cats.com’s archived Freely review Cat Food Advisor’s Freely dry-food review

The 2020 launch announcement said Freely products were made in the USA. A historical answer on Chewy attributed to Freely said the wet food was manufactured in South Dakota, ingredients came from suppliers around the world, and some naturally sourced vitamins could originate in China. These statements are historical and attributed; they do not establish current production or the sourcing of any old package. Chewy’s historical Q&A for Freely Turkey Recipe wet food

Cats.com names Instinct Limited Ingredient Diet, Koha and FirstMate as possible places to look for limited-ingredient, grain-free recipes featuring proteins such as rabbit, turkey or salmon. Treat these names as leads, not endorsements: formulas and availability can change, and the evidence here does not establish that a specific current recipe is equivalent to Freely. Compare the exact recipe, not just the label
- Protein sources and cross-contact: Check every animal-protein ingredient and whether the manufacturer explains how it manages potential cross-contact.
- Life stage and adequacy: Find the nutritional adequacy statement and confirm it fits your cat’s life stage.
- Format and feeding: Compare wet versus dry, moisture, calories per serving and the feeding amount for your cat.
- Nutrition figures: Check whether percentages are as-fed or dry-matter; do not compare unlike bases as if they were equivalent.
- Cost: Compare price per calorie or per feeding day rather than package price alone.
- Availability and experience: Confirm the product is currently sold and review recent batch and customer feedback.
A limited-ingredient or novel-protein label does not diagnose or treat a food allergy. If allergy or another medical issue is the reason for changing food, ask your veterinarian to guide the diet choice. Cats.com’s archived Freely review
