A PerthNow report published on 29 March 2024 said 17 sharks had been sighted near Western Australian swimming spots in the preceding 24 hours. The report included sightings near Indjidup Bay and in the Swan River at South Perth. That count describes a historical news report, not current shark activity.
What the March 2024 report said
PerthNow reported two sightings of a 3-metre bull shark offshore Escape Island near Jurien Bay shortly before 4 pm. At 2:41 pm, four sharks were spotted circling about 20 metres offshore of Indjidup Bay, near Yallingup. The report also described two sharks of unknown species in the Swan River at South Perth. PerthNow’s 29 March 2024 report placed these sightings two days after authorities urged caution around large marine predators during the salmon run.
Those examples do not account for all 17 sightings in the headline count; the report excerpt does not provide a complete itemized list. It also did not identify the species of the Swan River sharks.
How to check current shark activity in WA
For present-day information, check the WA Government’s SharkSmart service, which provides near-real-time activity information, alerts and warnings. Users can select coastal locations to receive relevant notifications. The 17-sighting figure from March 2024 should not be treated as a live warning.

What to do if you see a shark
- Report the sighting to Water Police on 9442 8600. The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development says the line is staffed 24/7; a report may prompt a response such as a beach closure by a lifeguard or land manager.
- If a helicopter siren signals a nearby shark, leave the water immediately and stay out for at least 60 minutes, following the WA Government’s guidance issued on 31 March 2026.
- Avoid entering the water near large schools of fish, and check SharkSmart for alerts before heading out.
The government’s 11 September 2026 announcement reported 707 helicopter patrols and almost 1,000 flying hours, 711 shark sightings reported by helicopter crews, and 83 associated beach closures. It also said the SharkSmart WA app had been downloaded more than 296,000 times. These are season and service activity figures, not estimates of an individual swimmer’s chance of encountering a shark.
