These 20 cool cat breeds stand out for their looks and the traits commonly associated with them—but no breed profile can guarantee how an individual cat will behave. To find a cat that fits your household, weigh coat care, activity, sociability, size, and your daily routine alongside appearance. Meet the cat when possible and consider its own behavior, not just its breed label.

How to choose a cat that fits your household

Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA) advises considering both how a cat looks and how it acts when choosing a pet. Breed descriptions can give you a starting point, but they describe tendencies, not promises about every cat. A cat’s individual personality, history, and needs matter too.

  • Coat and grooming: Long or dense coats can call for more frequent brushing than short coats. Consider whether grooming fits your schedule.
  • Activity: A more energetic cat may need regular interactive play and room to move.
  • Sociability and vocality: Breed profiles may describe cats as people-oriented, quiet, or talkative, but an individual cat may differ.
  • Size and space: Think about the cat’s adult size and whether your home can accommodate its movement, resting, and scratching needs.
  • Your routine: Match the cat’s likely care and interaction needs to the time and attention you can provide.

20 cool cat breeds to explore

The breeds below are a selection for discovery, not a measured ranking of popularity, health, or suitability. The descriptions reflect common breed-profile language and should not be treated as guarantees.

1. Ragdoll

Ragdolls are often described as calm and people-oriented. Consider whether that commonly noted sociability suits the amount of company and interaction your household can offer, and meet the individual cat to see how it responds to people.

2. Munchkin

Munchkins are known for short legs and are commonly described as playful and active. Their appearance alone won’t tell you how much play a particular cat wants; observe its mobility and behavior and ask about its individual needs.

3. Sphynx

Sphynx cats are hairless, but hairlessness does not mean care-free. Catster describes this breed as needing attention to sensitive skin and protection from sun and cold. Confirm any skin-care or temperature guidance with a veterinarian who can advise on the individual cat.

4. British Shorthair

British Shorthairs are often described as calm or placid. Catster notes that they still need interactive play; CFA also characterizes the breed as calm and quiet. Plan for enrichment rather than assuming a quiet disposition means no play needs.

5. Bengal

Bengals are commonly described as energetic, curious, and athletic. Catster notes a need for play and room to move. Consider whether you can provide regular activity, then assess the individual cat’s energy rather than relying on the breed label alone.

6. Maine Coon

Maine Coons are large, fluffy cats commonly described as friendly. Their coat may need regular grooming, so factor brushing into your routine and consider the space a large cat will need.

7. Birman

Birmans are recognized for blue eyes and white “mittens” on their paws. Catster advises daily brushing for this breed. Ask about the coat care required for the individual cat and whether you can maintain it consistently.

8. Persian

Persians have long coats, and Catster describes daily grooming as part of their care. Their appearance may appeal to you, but make sure the grooming commitment fits your household before choosing one.

9. Abyssinian

CFA describes Abyssinians as active and affectionate. These are broad tendencies, not a prediction of an individual cat’s behavior. Meet the cat and consider whether its observed activity and interaction style fit your home.

10. American Shorthair

CFA describes American Shorthairs as even-tempered and quiet. Use those terms as a general introduction, then pay attention to the cat’s actual temperament and needs.

11. Additional breeds to consider

Breed descriptions are useful only when they help you ask better questions about a particular cat. For any other breed you’re considering, look at its coat, typical activity, sociability, size, and grooming needs in a current registry or breed guide, then verify the details with a knowledgeable source.

Prepare for care beyond the breed profile

Whatever breed you choose, basic supplies and routine care support a cat’s day-to-day well-being. The ASPCA recommends regular brushing or combing; frequent brushing helps keep a coat clean and can reduce shedding and hairballs. Its supply checklist includes a brush and comb, interactive toys, a scratching post or pad, a litter box and litter, a carrier, and a bed or box with a warm blanket or towel.

ASPCA guidance also calls for food suited to a cat’s life stage and individual health, fresh clean water, an accessible litter box, a stable scratching post, and routine veterinary examinations. Ask your veterinarian about care specific to your cat; general breed profiles are not a substitute for individualized advice.
