Cats can have small amounts of plain, fully cooked chicken, turkey, lean beef, pork or fish, plus a few simple vegetables such as broccoli, peas, sweet potato and pumpkin. Treat these as occasional snacks for a healthy cat—not meals—and keep all treats to no more than 5% of daily calories. The nine ideas below are ingredient-based serving suggestions; they have not each been separately clinically tested as finished dishes.

How to share human food safely

Choose plain ingredients, cook meat and fish thoroughly, and remove bones, skin where specified, and excess fat. Skip seasoning, oil, butter and added salt. Offer only a little, especially the first time, and stop if your cat develops digestive upset. Raw animal products and bones are not safe alternatives: raw foods can carry germs, while bones can cause choking or internal injury. Cornell Feline Health Center and the CDC explain the risks of raw pet food and the importance of a balanced diet.

Keep snacks at 5% or less of your cat’s daily calories; the remaining food should be a nutritionally complete cat food. Cats need taurine from animal-based protein, so even safe human foods cannot make a balanced feline diet. ASPCA cat nutrition guidance discusses treat limits and nutritional needs.

Which foods and preparations should you avoid?

  • Onions, garlic and chives: These can damage red blood cells and cause anemia. Avoid them in any form, including as ingredients in sauces or seasoned leftovers.
  • Raw meat and fish, and bones: Raw foods can carry pathogens that affect pets and people; bones can choke a cat or cause internal injury.
  • Seasoned, salty or fatty scraps: Butter, oil, added salt, spices and rich trimmings add avoidable risks. Processed meats such as bacon and lunch meat are poor choices for sharing.
  • Milk: Cats generally do not have significant amounts of lactase, so milk may cause vomiting or diarrhea.

For food hazards and the treat limit, see the ASPCA’s cat nutrition tips and its people foods to avoid guidance.

Human snacks are not a replacement for cat food

Meat and fish are animal-protein snacks, while vegetables and fruit are optional, small-volume additions that some cats may not tolerate well. Neither category supplies a complete feline diet in the right proportions by itself. Cornell notes that homemade diets can be difficult and time-consuming to formulate correctly and generally recommends nutritionally balanced commercial food unless a veterinarian recommends a home-formulated medical diet.

If your cat has a health problem, eats a prescription diet, or needs a diet change, check with your veterinarian before sharing new foods. A snack that is safe for a healthy cat may not suit an individual cat’s medical needs.
