Looking for a Mexican-inspired name for your cat? Browse more than 200 ideas below, grouped by Spanish words, food, places, culture, coat, and personality. Each section identifies the kind of inspiration, so you can choose a name that fits your cat without treating every suggestion as a traditional Mexican pet name.
How to choose a Mexican-inspired cat name
“Mexican cat name” can mean a Spanish word, a food or place association, a reference to Mexican public culture, or a word from an Indigenous language of Mexico. Those are different sources, not interchangeable labels. Pick the kind of connection you want, then say the name aloud a few times; a short name that is easy for everyone at home to use often works especially well.

Nahuatl-inspired names: keep the language label specific
Nahuatl is one Indigenous language of Mexico, not a synonym for all Mexican or Indigenous culture. SIL Mexico notes Nahuatl’s influence on many place names and ethnonyms in Mexico and Central America, but that context does not make every Mexican name Nahuatl. For a directly supported cat-related option, choose Miztli: UNAM’s online Gran Diccionario Náhuatl gives the Spanish gloss “gato” in a historical entry sourced to Arenas (1611). UNAM’s 2014 Diccionario náhuatl-español is based on Alonso de Molina’s dictionaries and uses normalized Nahuatl and modernized Spanish. Verify less familiar Nahuatl claims in specialist references rather than relying on informal name lists.
