How to choose litter for a multi-cat household
Start with your cats’ acceptance, then weigh the features you need. A strong odor-control claim is not much help if a cat avoids the box, and a low-tracking pellet may require a scoop with larger slots. - Odor: Consider how many boxes you maintain, where they are located, and whether you prefer a scented or unscented product. Fragrance is not a substitute for removing waste.

- Dust: PetMD says high dust can irritate a cat’s respiratory system and may be more detrimental to cats with conditions such as asthma. It advises considering low-dust formulas when cats or people in the home have asthma or sensitivities. This is a reason to account for dust, not proof that any specific product prevents illness.
- Tracking and particle size: Lightweight granules can travel beyond the box; pellets and larger particles may behave differently underfoot and require a compatible scoop.
- Material and disposal: Clay, walnut, corn, and wood-fiber litters differ in texture and sustainability considerations. Do not assume a litter is suitable for flushing because its packaging says it is flushable; plumbing systems vary.

These are attributed editorial selections and product descriptions, not a controlled comparison of all ten products.

Catster describes this as scented, clumping clay litter with activated charcoal for odor control. Its page also notes low dust and larger particles. That combination may appeal to households looking for a conventional clumping clay option with odor-focused features. The tradeoffs are its scent and clay material; Catster says it is not biodegradable.

Walnut is a distinct alternative to clay, and the lack of added scent may suit some homes. The dust, tracking, and odor descriptions are Catster’s assessments, not results from a shared controlled test of the products in this guide.
4. Tidy Cats Performance+ Active Clean — odor-focused formula
In a May 26, 2026 announcement, Purina said Active Clean is designed around odor control. The company claims 30-day odor control when used as directed and says all three Performance+ formulas are 99.9% dust-free. Those are manufacturer claims, not independent comparative results.

6. Tidy Cats Performance+ Tidy Feet — tracking-focused formula
Purina positions Tidy Feet around tracking and claims 64% less tracking than the leading clumping litter, plus 21-day odor control when used as directed. Its 99.9% dust-free statement applies to this formula as well. These figures are the manufacturer’s claims; the announcement does not provide a controlled comparison with the other litters in this guide.
Purina said the three formulas were available online and at major pet and grocery retailers nationwide in 20 lb jugs, 22 lb boxes, and 35 lb pails. Availability can change, so check current retailer listings. The sizes and availability are as stated in the company’s May 26, 2026 announcement.

Cats.com describes this as a lightweight pellet litter and notes that it requires a scoop with larger slots. That equipment compatibility is a practical consideration: a standard fine-slotted scoop may not work well with pellets. Cats.com’s product description is not a head-to-head test result.

Cats.com describes this as a baking-soda formula with a sandy texture and observes that some cats may avoid that texture. If you are considering it, acceptance matters as much as the odor-control proposition: watch whether every cat continues to use the box normally.

There is no universally best style for multiple cats. Clumping clay is a familiar choice if easy scooping is central, but the clay picks here are scented and Catster says they are not biodegradable. Walnut, corn, and softwood fiber offer alternative materials, while pellets may reduce some tracking concerns but can call for a different scoop. A cat’s willingness to use the litter is decisive: introduce a new texture thoughtfully and observe whether each cat keeps using the box.

If respiratory sensitivity is a concern, put dust high on your comparison list and favor a low-dust option, as PetMD advises. Treat product-level dust figures as claims or publisher descriptions unless they come with a clearly described, comparable test. Purina’s 99.9% dust-free figure, for example, is its own claim for the three Performance+ formulas.

How often should you scoop and change cat litter?
PetMD recommends scooping daily or more often, keeping 1–3 inches of litter in the box, and completely changing litter monthly. A larger household workload does not disappear when you choose a litter marketed for multiple cats, so make scooping part of the routine and follow the product’s directions where they call for more frequent care.
PetMD’s veterinary reviewers recommend bagging and throwing used litter away even when a product is marketed as flushable, because plumbing systems vary. Follow local waste rules and your product’s disposal directions rather than assuming flushing is safe for every home.
What the product rankings do—and do not—tell you
Catster says its team considers veterinarians and factors such as customer reviews, brand reputation, veterinary experience, and, in some cases, hands-on testing. That description does not establish that every product in its roundup was hands-on or laboratory tested. NBC Select describes its recommendations as informed by personal experience, staff recommendations, and veterinary guidance. Purina’s Performance+ figures are manufacturer claims. None of these sources establishes a controlled, side-by-side laboratory test across the ten products here, so rankings and performance statements should be read in that context.
