How to choose a cartoon cat name

Match the personality

Watch your cat for a few days before deciding. A kitten that launches ambushes may suit Jinx, Mayhem or Rascal, while a cat that spends most of the afternoon asleep may be better named Snooze, Dozer or Pillow. Friendly lap cats often fit soft names such as Honey or Cuddlebug; confident cats can carry Duke, Queenie or Majesty.

Use appearance and color as a shortcut

Coat patterns can narrow the field quickly. Tux, Domino and Oreo work for black-and-white cats; Pumpkin, Ginger and Marmalade suit orange coats; Shadow, Onyx and Midnight fit dark cats; and Snowball, Ivory or Frost complement pale fur. A distinctive spot, stripe or patch can inspire Spot, Speckles, Stripe or Patches.

Decide how you want gender to read

Names such as Duchess, Princess, Countess and Empress have a traditionally feminine presentation, while Duke, Prince, Baron and Marquis read as traditionally masculine. Neutral options include Boots, Milo, Scout, Cosmo, Muffin and Noodle. Your cat’s sex does not have to determine the name; choose the sound and personality you prefer.

Test how easily you can call it

Short names with clear vowel sounds are usually easiest to say across a room or in a noisy home. Say the name at normal volume, then try it in a cheerful voice and a firm voice. Longer names can work well when they provide a formal name and an everyday nickname—for example, Puss in Boots can become Boots, and Cuddlebug can become Cuddles.

Choose recognition level

A direct reference such as Tom, Garfield or Salem immediately signals a familiar character. A softer reference such as Kitty or Figaro nods toward animation without requiring everyone to identify the source. Original cartoon-style names, including Bink, Fuzzbert and Quibble, create an animated feel without claiming that your cat is an official character.

Balance originality with practicality

Rare names are memorable, but avoid a spelling or pronunciation that you will constantly need to explain. Say your three finalists to another person and write each one on a note. The name that still feels natural after a day or two is usually the strongest choice.

What famous cartoon names suggest

Tom and Jerry references

Tom is a particularly apt choice for a cat who seems motivated by eating, sleeping and chasing mice—the traits described on the official Tom and Jerry page. The series was created by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera in 1940, so Tom also carries a connection to classic animation history. Jerry is not included in this cat-name list because it is the mouse’s name, but Tom, Scratchy, Pouncey and Jinx can all suggest comic pursuit without copying a full character identity.

Garfield references

Garfield is strongly associated with an orange coat and a love of lasagna. That makes Garfield, Lasagna, Pumpkin, Marmalade and Toast natural choices for an orange cat or a cat who treats every meal as an event. Paramount Press Express announced a new 2D-animated Garfield series on March 6, 2026, so the character remains active in current animation as well as older strips and shows.

Hello Kitty-inspired softness

Sanrio’s official Hello Kitty character page makes Hello Kitty a recognizable reference, while Kitty, Kiki, Mimi, Bubbles and Tilly provide gentler names with a similar friendly tone. These are inspired choices, not claims that your cat is an official character.

Classic books and naming references

For a dedicated naming reference, Penguin Random House lists Garfield’s Book of Cat Names by Jim Davis, published November 29, 2005. The 96-page book is described as a guide to giving a cat a proper name. It can be useful if you want more character-themed prompts after narrowing your shortlist.

A five-step shortlist test

  1. Write down three finalists. Choose one direct character reference, one descriptive name and one original cartoon-style option.
  2. Say each name aloud. Check whether the first syllable is distinct and whether you naturally shorten the name.
  3. Use it in a sentence. Try phrases such as “Dinner, ___,” “No, ___,” and “Good morning, ___.” A name that works in all three situations is easier to live with.
  4. Check for unwanted associations. Make sure family members can pronounce it and that it does not sound too close to another pet’s name or a frequently used command.
  5. Wait one day. If the same name still matches your cat after observing another day of behavior, make it official.

Whether you choose a famous cat, a food joke or a completely new invention, the strongest cartoon name is one you can say comfortably and your cat can learn to recognize.
