Small, long-nosed dogs tend to live longer than large or flat-faced dogs, but no single breed is guaranteed to be the longest-lived. The strongest recent comparison, a 2024 analysis of 584,734 dogs in the United Kingdom, found the longest-lived group was small, dolichocephalic (long-headed) female dogs. Breed averages describe populations, not an individual dog’s future.

What the largest studies show about canine longevity

Dog lifespan is associated with several interacting traits: body size, sex, head shape, breed ancestry and genetic diversity. The studies below use different countries, records and definitions, so their figures should not be combined into one universal breed leaderboard.

Study Population and setting Main finding How to interpret it
McMillan et al., Scientific Reports, 2024 584,734 unique UK dogs, including 284,734 deceased dogs; 155 breeds Small-dolichocephalic-female dogs were the longest-lived comparison group. Body size, sex and cephalic index were associated with survival. The phylogenetic signal for median lifespan was Pagel’s Lambda = 0.808. A large UK population analysis, not a promise for any individual dog or a complete ranking of named breeds.
Roccaro and collaborators, Preventive Veterinary Medicine, 2024 4,957 deceased dogs recorded from 2004–2020 through nine Italian veterinary teaching hospitals and two public-health institutions Overall median longevity was 10.0 years. Crossbred, female, neutered and small dogs had significantly longer median longevity in this cohort. These are Italy-specific death records and should not be treated as a worldwide life-expectancy estimate.
U.S. primary-care cohort, 2020 20,970 dogs Breeds with larger effective population sizes or lower inbreeding coefficients had median survival 3–6 months longer. Mountain-group purebreds had median survival 3.5–4.6 years shorter than other purebred groups after body-size correction. The results describe associations after statistical adjustment, not a guaranteed genetic advantage for every mixed-breed or breed-line dog.
Systematic review, 2025 62 manuscripts on pet-dog longevity Reviewed breed, sex, body size, neuter status, vaccination, behavior, body weight, dental-scaling frequency, diet and epigenetic measures. The review summarizes associations across studies; it does not show that one food, product or routine adds a fixed number of years.

Which named breeds have appeared among the longest-lived?

An older UK veterinary-record study identified several breeds among its longest-lived groups. Because the data and methods are historical and dataset-specific, these should be read as examples from that study rather than a current universal ranking.

Breed Finding in the older UK records study
Miniature Poodle Among the breeds identified as longest-lived
Bearded Collie Among the breeds identified as longest-lived
Border Collie Among the breeds identified as longest-lived
Miniature Dachshund Among the breeds identified as longest-lived
Dogue de Bordeaux Among the breeds identified as shortest-lived
Great Dane Among the breeds identified as shortest-lived

The more recent UK analysis did not reduce longevity to a single winning breed. Its strongest pattern was morphological: small body size combined with a long head, particularly in females. “Dolichocephalic” describes a relatively long, narrow skull; flat-faced or short-headed dogs are generally classified toward the brachycephalic end of the same head-shape spectrum.

Do small dogs live longer than large dogs?

In the UK and Italian datasets, small dogs had the survival or longevity advantage. The pattern is a population association, not a rule that every small dog will outlive every large dog. Large dogs can reach advanced ages, while an individual small dog may die young from disease, injury or other causes.

Head shape also mattered in the UK analysis. Body size and cephalic index were modeled separately, which means the result was not simply a size effect relabeled as a head-shape effect. The study found survival differences across combinations of size, sex and skull shape, with small, long-headed females forming the longest-lived comparison group.

Do mixed-breed dogs live longer?

The 2024 Italian death-record study found significantly longer median longevity for crossbred dogs than for purebred dogs in that Italian cohort. That result is consistent with the possibility that broader ancestry can reduce some inherited risks, but it does not make “mixed-breed” a guarantee of extra years.

Genetic diversity appears relevant in the 2020 U.S. cohort: breeds with larger effective population sizes or lower inbreeding coefficients had median survival 3–6 months longer than breeds with smaller effective population sizes or higher inbreeding coefficients. Effective population size is a measure of how much genetic diversity is represented in a breeding population; it is not the same as the number of dogs registered.

How to give your dog the best chance of a longer life

Keep body condition in the veterinarian-recommended range

Body weight was one of the modifiable factors evaluated in the 2025 systematic review. Ask your veterinarian to assess body condition rather than relying only on a scale, because ideal weight varies with frame, age, muscle and disease status. Recheck the assessment as your dog grows older or its activity changes.

Feed a complete diet and control portions

Use a nutritionally complete diet appropriate for the dog’s life stage and medical needs, and measure portions consistently. A veterinarian can help estimate calorie needs for a growing puppy, senior dog or dog prone to obesity or another disease. The available evidence does not support promising a specific food as a guaranteed lifespan extender.

Use preventive veterinary care

Maintain routine examinations and vaccination according to your veterinarian’s risk assessment. Investigate changes in appetite, mobility, breathing, lumps, drinking, elimination or behavior instead of waiting for them to become severe. Preventive management is relevant to longevity, but the evidence summarized here does not establish one universal appointment schedule that adds a guaranteed number of years.

Make dental care routine

Build regular dental care into daily life and ask about professional cleaning when your veterinarian recommends it. Dental-scaling frequency appears among the factors evaluated in the systematic review, but consumer dental products have not been proven to extend lifespan.

Provide safe activity and enrichment

Regular movement, play and mental enrichment support behavior and help with body-weight management when matched to age, fitness and physical limitations. There is no single exercise prescription that fits every breed or health status. Dogs with breathing problems, arthritis or heart disease need a plan set with a veterinarian.

Consider health and diversity when choosing a dog or breeding

When acquiring a dog, consider adult size, head shape, known breed-health risks, parental health information and the genetic diversity of the line. Avoid choosing solely from a “longest-lived breed” list: the studies show broad population patterns, while an individual dog’s care and inherited risks remain decisive.

What commonly leads owners to misread lifespan claims?

  • Confusing median longevity with a guarantee. A median is the midpoint of a study population; half the dogs lived longer and half shorter in that dataset.
  • Treating a historical ranking as current. The named-breed list comes from older UK records and may not represent today’s populations or other countries.
  • Using record-holder dogs as evidence. Exceptional old dogs are not representative of their breed’s typical survival.
  • Ignoring geography and sample design. UK living-dog records, Italian death records and a U.S. primary-care cohort measure different populations.
  • Assuming euthanasia data are natural-life data. In the Italian study, 2,883 of 4,957 dogs (58.2%) were euthanised, a detail that affects how those death records should be interpreted.
  • Overlooking causes of death. Neoplasia was the most frequent classified cause in the Italian study and mostly affected large-sized dogs, but that finding does not establish the same cause-of-death pattern everywhere.

What the evidence means for an individual dog

The most defensible answer to “Which dog breeds live the longest?” is that small, long-headed dogs—especially females in the 2024 UK comparison—had the most favorable survival pattern in the strongest recent analysis. Historical records placed Miniature Poodles, Bearded Collies, Border Collies and Miniature Dachshunds among longer-lived breeds, while Dogues de Bordeaux and Great Danes appeared among shorter-lived breeds in that older dataset.

Those findings can inform a choice, but they cannot predict one dog’s lifespan. Maintaining a healthy body condition, feeding appropriately, using preventive care, addressing dental disease, providing suitable activity and considering inherited health risks are practical ways to improve the odds of a longer, healthier life.
