Looking for a name for your pet snake? These 260 ideas range from cute and funny to cool, colorful, mythological and species-inspired, with options for ball pythons and corn snakes. Choose one based on your snake’s appearance, personality or species—not assumptions about its sex or temperament.
Short, easy-to-say names such as “Mochi,” “Onyx” and “Ramen” are convenient for everyday use. A longer choice such as “Jörmungandr” can still work with a nickname.

How to choose a name that fits
- Observe your snake. Notice whether it often explores, hides, climbs or coils. A name can be inspired by what you see, but behavior on its own does not establish a fixed personality.
- Use visible traits for inspiration. Color and pattern can suggest a name, but they do not identify a snake’s species, sex or venom status. “Viper,” “Cobra” or “Venom” is just a name, not evidence about the animal.
- Consider the species. Corn snakes, ball pythons, kingsnakes, milksnakes, Kenyan sand boas, garter snakes and hognose snakes have different care requirements. A name should not suggest that all snakes need the same enclosure, heat, humidity or feeding schedule.
- Say the name out loud. Short names or names with a clear ending can be easy to use consistently. If you choose “Jörmungandr,” a nickname such as “Jorm” may be handy.
- Do not guess sex from appearance. In some species, including corn snakes, external features do not reliably distinguish males and females. Probing or popping should be left to a qualified veterinarian or experienced professional.
Snake facts for name inspiration
Snakes are reptiles covered in overlapping scales made of keratin, the same material found in human hair and fingernails. Belly scales help provide traction as they move. Healthy snake scales are dry, not slimy. The Smithsonian’s National Zoo explains snake scales and other serpent features.

Snakes cannot blink because they lack movable eyelids. A transparent scale, often called a spectacle or eye cap, protects each eye. Their forked tongues collect chemical information and transfer it to the Jacobson’s organ in the roof of the mouth, making “Scent” or “Tongue Flicker” fitting name inspiration. Snakes are ectothermic, meaning they rely on external environmental heat to regulate body temperature. They are often defensive rather than aggressive; give a wild snake space instead of trying to touch or corner it. The Smithsonian’s National Zoo discusses snake behavior and biology.

Not reliably in every species. For example, corn snake sex cannot be determined consistently from external characteristics alone. A qualified veterinarian or experienced professional should handle invasive sexing procedures.

Does a name like Viper or Cobra mean a pet snake is venomous?
No. A name is not a reliable way to identify a snake’s species or venom status. Ask a qualified professional if you need help identifying a snake.
The bottom line
Start with your snake’s appearance, behavior or species, then pick a name you will enjoy saying regularly. “Noodle” and “Mochi” suit a playful theme; “Onyx,” “Medusa” and “Eclipse” feel more dramatic. A name does not change the fact that care needs vary by species, age, size and health.
