The number 27 in this guide is not the state total: it is a curated set of Queensland examples, informed by official identification material and regional guides. A separate Queensland Government guide records 27 terrestrial species in the Brisbane area alone.
Species ranges change sharply between Brisbane, the tropical north, inland districts and Queensland waters. Use the list to understand the kinds of snakes you may hear about, not to identify a live snake by colour or shape. Keep your distance, never handle a snake, and treat any suspected bite as an emergency.

What “27 types of snakes in Queensland” really means
Queensland’s fauna is far richer than a 27-species list. The state government’s current snake information says about 120 species occur in Queensland, with about 65% venomous. Its South-East Queensland guide separately reports 27 terrestrial species in the Brisbane area. This article therefore presents 27 representative species and groups found in different parts of the state; it is not a census and it does not mean every snake below lives in every Queensland town.

Regional guides are more useful than a statewide colour chart. The Greater Brisbane material, for example, says eastern brown snakes are the only one of its listed venomous examples regularly found in Brisbane suburbs, while the Cairns material describes a different tropical assemblage. Check the current regional map or local species list before drawing conclusions about a snake near your home.

27 Queensland snakes at a glance
The table is for general familiarity only. “Non-venomous” does not mean safe to approach: a harmless snake can be confused with a medically significant species, and a live animal can move too quickly for a reliable visual check.
| # | Snake | Typical Queensland setting | Broad status and useful context |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Coastal taipan | Coastal and near-coastal north and east | Highly venomous; avoid all contact |
| 2 | Inland taipan | South-west Queensland and adjoining inland regions | Highly venomous; Queensland Museum calls it the world’s most venomous land snake by venom toxicity |
| 3 | Eastern brown snake | Open country, farms and many eastern settlements | Venomous; the principal venomous snake regularly encountered in Brisbane suburbs according to the regional guide |
| 4 | Eastern tiger snake | Wetlands, grassland and southern or coastal districts | Venomous; distribution is regional |
| 5 | Rough-scaled snake | Wet tropical and coastal habitats | Venomous; can be confused with a keelback |
| 6 | Red-bellied black snake | Wetlands, creeks and forest edges | Venomous; do not rely on its dark colour for identification |
| 7 | Common death adder | Ground cover in woodland, heath and grassland | Venomous ambush snake; never approach a motionless snake |
| 8 | Myall snake | Dry inland and open habitats | Venomous example included in the Queensland identification guide |
| 9 | Brown tree snake | Woodland and rainforest, especially in the tropics | Rear-fanged with weak venom; nocturnal, but still not a handling species |
| 10 | Common tree snake | Gardens, forest, wetland and urban tree cover | Non-venomous; highly variable in colour |
| 11 | Northern tree snake | Tropical north, including rainforest and woodland | Non-venomous in the Cairns regional guide |
| 12 | Keelback | Creeks, ponds, swamps and other wet places | Australia’s only non-venomous semi-aquatic snake; can resemble a rough-scaled snake |
| 13 | Carpet python | Forest, farmland, roofs and suburban edges | Non-venomous python; one of the most familiar large snakes around homes |
| 14 | Amethystine python | Tropical rainforest and north Queensland | Non-venomous constrictor; a Palm Cove specimen reported by Queensland Museum measured 5.65 metres and weighed 24 kilograms |
| 15 | Spotted python | Rocky areas, woodland and drier coastal country | Non-venomous python |
| 16 | White-crowned snake | Leaf litter, gardens and forest margins | Small venomous snake; do not pick up small snakes |
| 17 | Eastern small-eyed snake | Moist forest, gardens and ground cover | Venomous; a small size is not a safety indicator |
| 18 | Yellow-faced whip snake | Open woodland and dry forest | Venomous example from South-East Queensland material |
| 19 | Golden-crowned snake | Leaf litter and forested areas | Small venomous snake; avoid close inspection |
| 20 | Marsh snake | Wetlands, drains and creek margins | Venomous; regional occurrence varies |
| 21 | Mulga snake | Dry inland woodland and grassland | Venomous; also called the king brown snake |
| 22 | Western brown snake | Arid and semi-arid inland country | Venomous; not a Brisbane suburb assumption |
| 23 | Northern death adder | Tropical northern ground cover | Venomous ambush snake; regional identification is essential |
| 24 | Children’s python | Rocky woodland and savanna in northern and inland districts | Non-venomous python |
| 25 | Black-headed python | Woodland, grassland and rocky country | Non-venomous constrictor |
| 26 | Woma | Dry inland Queensland | Non-venomous constrictor; local range is patchy |
| 27 | Arafura file snake | Tropical rivers, lagoons and coastal waters | Aquatic, non-venomous example; not a Brisbane garden snake |
How the main Queensland groups differ
Venomous snakes in the official examples
Taipans, brown snakes, tiger snakes, rough-scaled snakes, red-bellied black snakes and death adders are medically important groups. The Queensland identification cheat sheet also includes myall snakes, and regional material names yellow-faced whip snakes and other smaller species. Their body colours overlap: browns, blacks, reds, greys and patterned forms occur in several unrelated snakes. Venom status cannot be inferred from a single stripe, head shape or apparent attitude.
The inland taipan deserves a precise qualification. Queensland Museum identifies Oxyuranus microlepidotus, found in south-west Queensland and adjoining states, as the world’s most venomous land snake. The museum’s comparison says its venom was four times as toxic as coastal taipan venom in laboratory-mouse measurements. That is a toxicity result, not a claim that inland taipans are the most common snake people encounter.

Tree snakes and the keelback
The Cairns guide describes the brown tree snake as rear-fanged with weak venom and says it is mainly nocturnal in woodland and rainforest. It describes common and northern tree snakes as non-venomous. Common tree snakes can be extremely variable in colour, so a green, brown or patterned individual is not automatically a different species.
The keelback is unusual because it is Australia’s only non-venomous semi-aquatic snake. Its resemblance to rough-scaled snakes is a practical warning: even an experienced observer should not make a safety decision from a quick glance at a snake beside water.
Pythons and other non-venomous snakes
Carpet, amethystine, spotted, Children’s, black-headed and woma pythons kill prey by constriction rather than venom. They may enter roofs, sheds or chicken areas while following prey. A large python is generally trying to escape, but its size and strength make handling dangerous for both animal and person. Queensland Government material also discusses blind snakes, a separate group of small burrowing snakes that are easily mistaken for other slender species.

Where Queensland snakes are found
Brisbane and South-East Queensland
The South-East Queensland guide’s figure of 27 applies to terrestrial snakes in the Brisbane area. It lists carpet pythons, common tree snakes, keelbacks, yellow-faced whip snakes, white-crowned snakes and eastern small-eyed snakes among commonly encountered examples. Eastern brown snakes are the listed venomous species regularly found in Brisbane suburbs. Coastal taipans, tiger snakes, death adders and rough-scaled snakes have important location qualifications in that guide, so their mention does not mean equal suburban abundance.

Cairns has rainforest, mangroves, creeks and tropical woodland that support species rarely seen in southern Queensland. Brown tree snakes, common tree snakes and northern tree snakes are highlighted in the Cairns material. Tropical waterways also explain why aquatic and semi-aquatic species should not be identified from a photograph copied from a Brisbane list.
Inland and south-west Queensland
Drier inland habitats support snakes such as inland taipans, mulga snakes, western brown snakes, womas and several pythons. A species listed for inland Queensland may be absent from the coast, while a coastal species may not occur in the interior. Always match a proposed identification with the location, habitat and the current distribution map.

How to identify a Queensland snake without putting yourself at risk
- Stop and create distance. Do not move closer for a clearer photograph, and keep children and pets behind you.
- Use location as context, not proof. Note whether the snake is in a tree, water, leaf litter, a roof space or open grass, but do not use habitat alone to declare it harmless.
- Observe only from a safe position. If you can do so without approaching, record time, place, approximate length and behaviour. A distant photograph may help a licensed catcher or museum expert.
- Compare with authoritative material after the event. Queensland Government identification pages are general guidance and explicitly should not be relied on for positive identification. Scale and tooth characteristics may be needed, and those are not reasons to inspect a live snake.
- Assume uncertainty matters. Queensland Government states: "There is no hard-and-fast rule to distinguish a dangerous snake from a harmless one." If you cannot identify it with professional certainty, treat it as potentially dangerous.
What to do when you see a snake
Stay calm, back away and give the snake a clear route to leave. Most encounters end when the animal is no longer cornered. Do not catch, pin, strike or kill it. Native snakes are protected in Queensland, and an attempted removal can cause a bite or injure the animal.
For a snake inside a building, near people, or trapped in a yard, contact an appropriately licensed snake catcher. An injured snake also needs trained wildlife assistance; do not put it in a box or transport it yourself. Around a home, reduce attractants by keeping grass low, maintaining tidy garden beds, stacking timber neatly and putting food scraps in closed compost bins.
Snakebite: treat every suspected bite as urgent
Queensland Department of Education bite guidance, reviewed in October 2023, says to call 000, keep the patient still, arrange medical assistance and use pressure immobilisation with splinting for a bitten limb as instructed. The factsheet says all suspected bites should be treated as dangerous because snakes can be difficult to identify. Follow the current Queensland emergency and first-aid instructions when acting; do not wait for swelling, pain or a confirmed species.

- Keep the person still and reassured. Movement can spread venom through the lymphatic system.
- Apply pressure immobilisation and splinting according to current official instructions, without removing clothing to examine the wound.
- Do not cut, suck, wash, ice or tourniquet the bite. Do not try to catch the snake for identification.
- Wait for medical supervision. Monitor the person and follow the dispatcher’s directions until help arrives.
Queensland Museum reports that Australia usually has fewer than three snakebite deaths a year. That figure does not make an individual bite safe to watch at home; prompt first aid and medical care are the reason outcomes can be good.
Choosing a field guide
A current Australian snake or Queensland reptile field guide can help you learn regional names, habitats and distribution maps. Use it from a safe distance or after the snake has left. No book, app or photograph makes close inspection, capture or amateur positive identification safe, and a guide should never delay a 000 call after a suspected bite.
