28 Guppy Tank Mates That Can Work—and How to Choose Safely

The best guppy tank mates are peaceful fish with compatible adult size, social needs and water requirements. Compare 28 candidates and their caveats.

The best guppy tank mates are small, peaceful community fish whose adult size, social needs, activity level and water requirements overlap with your guppies. Good candidates include selected livebearers, tetras, rasboras, danios, Corydoras and other peaceful bottom dwellers—but no broad group is automatically compatible. Check the exact species and your aquarium’s stocking capacity before buying.

The 28 fish below are candidates, not guaranteed pairings. Aqueon, Fluval and PetMD all stress matching temperament, adult size, diet, schooling behavior and water conditions. A fish that is peaceful in one aquarium can still outcompete guppies, nip fins or eat fry in another.

What to check before choosing a guppy tank mate

Use these filters in order. A peaceful temperament is necessary, but it is only the first screen.

  • Adult size: Exclude fish large enough to swallow a guppy, bully it or dominate feeding.
  • Temperament: Avoid fin-nippers, persistent territorial species and fish described as aggressive or highly predatory.
  • Social needs: Schooling fish need an appropriate group, and a group takes space that cannot also be allocated to unlimited guppies.
  • Swimming layer: Combining surface, midwater and bottom-dwelling fish can reduce crowding, but it does not replace adequate volume and filtration.
  • Diet and speed: Very fast feeders may take food from guppies; specialized grazers may starve if the aquarium lacks their natural food.
  • Water chemistry: Compare temperature, pH, hardness and tolerance for any additives. Test the aquarium rather than relying on a label.
  • Breeding goals: If you want guppy or shrimp offspring to survive, even peaceful fish may eat newborns.

Useful water-parameter overlap

Fish group Published care range or guidance How to interpret it
Livebearers, including guppies 74–78°F and pH 7.0–8.4 in Aqueon’s livebearer guidance Suitable for many hard, alkaline community aquariums, provided the exact species agrees.
Captive-bred Corydoras 74–80°F, pH 7.0–8.0 and 3–10 dKH in Aqueon’s Corydoras guide There is broad overlap with livebearers. Wild-caught Corydoras may require softer, more acidic water.
Many commercially raised rasboras 75–80°F in Aqueon’s rasbora guidance Some rasboras fit a guppy aquarium; tiny Boraras and wild-caught fish need closer species-level checking.

These are care recommendations, not compatibility experiments. Measure temperature, pH and hardness before adding fish and again after the aquarium has adjusted. A freshwater aquarium water-test kit is a practical supply; PetMD’s veterinarian-authored guppy guide includes regular testing in its care advice.

28 guppy tank-mate candidates

Keep the listed fish in the group size their species requires. Do not buy one schooling fish as a “test” and leave it alone if its care guide calls for a group.

1. Endler’s livebearer

Endler’s livebearers are small, peaceful livebearers with similar warm, alkaline-water preferences to guppies. They can work in a livebearer community when the aquarium has room for both populations.

Watch for: They hybridize readily with guppies and mixed-sex groups reproduce quickly. Use a planned male-to-female ratio and be prepared for additional fry.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Platy

Platies are generally peaceful livebearers that use the same broad community style as guppies. Their calm behavior and midwater activity make them a common candidate.

Watch for: Adult platies are stockier than guppies and produce many fry. Confirm that the aquarium can support the adult fish rather than stocking for their juvenile size.

3. Molly

Small or standard mollies can be compatible with guppies when temperature and alkaline-water conditions match. They are active community fish and generally do not require a predator-style setup.

Watch for: Molly varieties differ substantially in adult size and body shape. Large sailfin types can outgrow a small community aquarium, and all mixed-sex livebearers add breeding pressure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Swordtail

Swordtails are peaceful livebearers that occupy the middle and upper levels and are included among community-fish options in guppy care guidance.

Watch for: They become considerably larger and more active than guppies. Choose them only when the aquarium has adequate swimming length and a stocking plan based on adult size.

5. Neon tetra

Neon tetras are small schooling tetras and a plausible midwater companion for guppies in a stable community aquarium.

Watch for: Keep a proper school, provide cover and ensure guppies are not taking every meal. Check the exact stock’s temperature and pH range instead of assuming every tetra has identical needs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Ember tetra

Ember tetras are peaceful, small schooling fish that usually leave adult guppies alone and add activity without occupying the bottom.

  • Heart, Liver & Immune Health - Multifunctional Bites feature powerful antioxidants, premium CoQ10, Cod Liver Oil and Vitamins A, C, & E to promote healthy cardiovascular function, support liver health and enhance immune response.

Watch for: Their small size makes them vulnerable to large tank mates and hungry adult fish. Dense plants and appropriately sized food help them compete without turning the aquarium into a crowded mixed school.

7. Glowlight tetra

Glowlight tetras are generally calm schooling fish and can be considered where their water range overlaps the aquarium’s established conditions.

Watch for: Buy a group rather than a single specimen, and observe feeding. A peaceful fish can still lose food to faster guppies if portions and distribution are poorly managed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. Black neon tetra

Black neon tetras are schooling community fish with a larger body profile than the tiniest tetras, making them less easily overlooked at feeding time.

Watch for: Confirm the aquarium can support their school in addition to guppies. Avoid combining them with any fin-nipping or predatory species, even if those fish are marketed as community fish.

9. Harlequin rasbora

Harlequin rasboras are among the clearer rasbora candidates for a peaceful guppy community. Aqueon lists guppies among possible rasbora companions.

Watch for: Rasboras are not interchangeable. Check the exact species’ adult size, group requirement and temperature range, and provide enough midwater space for both schools.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

10. Lambchop rasbora

Lambchop rasboras have a similar peaceful schooling profile to harlequins and can work in a planted community with guppies when conditions match.

Watch for: Their security depends on a proper group and cover. Do not treat a few individuals as a complete school or assume a shop’s common name identifies the same species everywhere.

11. Chili rasbora

Chili rasboras are tiny, gentle Boraras that may coexist with adult guppies in a carefully managed aquarium.

Watch for: Their very small size, shy behavior and specialized social needs make them a conditional choice. The rasbora guidance notes that dwarf rasboras are generally best kept in a species-focused setup; guppies may also eat their fry.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

12. Zebra danio

Zebra danios are active schooling fish that can share a community aquarium with guppies when there is sufficient swimming room and filtration.

Watch for: Their speed and constant movement can stress slower fish and monopolize food. Do not use them in a cramped aquarium or with long-finned fish that are easily harassed.

13. Pearl danio

Pearl danios are peaceful schooling danios and a possible match for an active guppy community.

Watch for: As with zebra danios, their activity level matters more than their peaceful reputation. Keep a full group, leave open swimming space and watch for feeding competition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

14. Celestial pearl danio

Celestial pearl danios are small, relatively shy schooling fish that can be considered only in a calm, well-planted community.

Watch for: Their diminutive size and reserved behavior make them vulnerable to boisterous tank mates. Confirm the exact water range and provide dense cover; they are not a substitute for a conventional danio school.

15. Bronze Corydoras

Bronze Corydoras are peaceful bottom-dwelling catfish. Captive-bred Corydoras commonly tolerate 74–80°F, pH 7.0–8.0 and 3–10 dKH, overlapping the broad livebearer range.

Watch for: Keep a group and use smooth substrate so their barbels are not damaged. Wild-caught fish may need softer, more acidic water than captive-bred stock.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

16. Panda Corydoras

Panda Corydoras are small, social bottom dwellers that generally ignore adult guppies and occupy a different swimming layer.

Watch for: They still require a group, clean oxygenated water and suitable bottom space. Their lower-temperature preference may narrow the overlap, so check the source and exact stock before purchase.

17. Peppered Corydoras

Peppered Corydoras are peaceful scavenging catfish and a candidate for a community aquarium that is not kept excessively warm.

Watch for: Their preferred temperature can differ from that of tropical guppies. Prioritize the actual care range of your stock rather than choosing a temperature by common name alone.

Watch for: They need a social group and a suitably sized bottom area. Adult size, wild-versus-captive origin and hardness tolerance still need checking before mixing with livebearers.

19. Otocinclus

Otocinclus are small algae-grazing catfish that use the lower surfaces and can leave adult guppies undisturbed.

Watch for: They are not simply “cleanup fish.” New or sterile aquariums may lack enough natural grazing food, and competition or poor acclimation can cause losses. Add them only to a mature, well-maintained setup and supplement appropriately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

20. Kuhli loach

Kuhli loaches are peaceful, nocturnal bottom dwellers that can complement guppies by using a different area of the aquarium.

Watch for: They need hiding places, a suitable substrate and a group. Their water preferences may not match a hard, alkaline livebearer tank as closely as those of captive-bred Corydoras, so test and compare first.

21. Bristlenose pleco

A smaller bristlenose pleco can be a conditional bottom-dweller candidate in a sufficiently large, filtered aquarium.

Watch for: It is much larger and more heavily built than a guppy and needs wood, hiding areas and a diet beyond incidental algae. Never select a pleco solely because a store calls it a cleaner.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

22. Honey gourami

Honey gouramis are among the calmer gouramis and can occupy the upper and middle levels of a peaceful community aquarium.

Watch for: Individual temperament varies, and a gourami may become territorial around cover or a breeding site. Provide visual barriers and remove it if it chases or injures guppies.

23. Sparkling gourami

Sparkling gouramis are small labyrinth fish that may work in a heavily planted, low-conflict community.

Watch for: They are easily outcompeted by fast, boisterous fish and may be stressed by constant surface activity. Verify water parameters and observe feeding before committing to a permanent community.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

24. Cherry barb

Cherry barbs are one of the more peaceful barbs and can be considered with guppies in a roomy, well-planted aquarium.

Watch for: Barb species are not uniformly safe. Aqueon specifically cautions against fin-nippers such as tiger barbs in livebearer tanks, so identify the exact barb and remove any individual that nips guppy fins.

25. Dwarf neon rainbowfish

Dwarf neon rainbowfish are active, peaceful schooling fish that can add color to a larger community aquarium.

Watch for: They need a group and open swimming space, and their activity can overwhelm a small guppy tank. Check adult size and temperature requirements for the exact rainbowfish species.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

26. Forktail blue-eye

Forktail blue-eyes are small schooling rainbowfish relatives that may share a peaceful community with guppies when kept in suitable numbers.

Watch for: They are active surface-to-midwater fish and can be sensitive to poor water quality. Provide cover, a secure lid and enough space for both schools.

27. Threadfin rainbowfish

Threadfin rainbowfish are delicate, peaceful schooling fish that may fit a calm, planted guppy aquarium managed by an experienced keeper.

Watch for: Their flowing fins and slower feeding style make them a poor match for boisterous or fin-nipping companions. Confirm that they can obtain food before adding them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

28. Pristella (X-ray) tetra

Pristella tetras are peaceful schooling tetras and a reasonable candidate for a mixed community when their water range overlaps the aquarium.

Watch for: Keep a proper school and watch for competition at feeding time. Do not infer compatibility from the word “tetra” alone; species, adult size and behavior still determine the result.

Fish and combinations to avoid

Fluval advises against fast-moving, aggressive and larger fish with guppies and specifically says not to keep guppies with bettas. Aqueon warns that fin-nippers such as tiger barbs are unsuitable for livebearer tanks. Treat those as clear exclusion rules, not challenges to solve with extra decoration.

  • Bettas: Territorial behavior and long guppy fins create an unacceptable risk.
  • Tiger barbs and other persistent fin-nippers: They can harass or damage guppies.
  • Large cichlids, predatory fish and oversized catfish: Adult size and feeding behavior can turn guppies into prey or severely stress them.
  • Hyperactive schooling fish in a small tank: Even non-aggressive fish can exhaust guppies and prevent them from feeding.
  • Unknown “community” fish: A shop label is not a substitute for the exact species’ adult size and care sheet.

Breeding changes the answer

Mixed-sex livebearers reproduce frequently. Guidance for livebearers commonly recommends keeping two or three females per male to reduce persistent courtship and harassment. This ratio limits stress; it does not prevent pregnancy.

Adult guppies may eat fry, and almost every fish on this list can take newborn livebearers if it can fit them in its mouth. Plants, moss and other cover increase hiding opportunities but do not guarantee survival. If raising fry is the priority, use a dedicated breeding or grow-out plan rather than assuming a community tank will protect them.

How to add a tank mate responsibly

  1. Measure the aquarium: Record temperature, pH and hardness with a freshwater test kit. Confirm the filter, heater and maintenance routine are stable.
  2. Identify the exact fish: Write down the scientific name or a reliable species name, adult size, required group size, diet and temperature range. “Rasbora,” “barb” and “rainbowfish” are not single care profiles.
  3. Recalculate stocking: Count adult guppies, expected fry and the full school you plan to add. Leave room for growth and normal swimming behavior.
  4. Quarantine new arrivals: Keep new fish separate long enough to observe illness, abnormal behavior and feeding before exposing the established aquarium.
  5. Acclimate gradually: Match temperature and introduce the fish with the lights subdued. Avoid adding several unrelated species at once, because you will not know which change caused a problem.
  6. Observe the first hours and days: Look for chasing, torn fins, hiding, gasping, clamped fins or fish that never reach food. Separate an incompatible individual promptly.
  7. Retest and maintain: Recheck water after stocking, keep up partial water changes and adjust feeding so bottom dwellers and shy schooling fish receive their share.

Feeding and aquarium additives

Community granules or flakes should be sized for the smallest fish, and sinking food may be needed for Corydoras or loaches. Aqueon’s Tropical Granules product page lists fancy guppies and several community-fish groups, but any food still has to match the mouth size and diet of every species.

Do not add aquarium salt automatically to a mixed-species tank. Aqueon notes that livebearers may benefit from salt in some setups, while also warning that all other inhabitants must tolerate it. Additives are a whole-aquarium decision: verify the needs of every fish, invertebrate and plant before dosing.

Bottom line

Start with peaceful, similarly sized schooling fish or bottom dwellers whose tested water conditions overlap your guppies. Platies, selected mollies, suitable tetras, harlequin-type rasboras, carefully chosen danios and captive-bred Corydoras are often easier starting points than tiny, delicate or highly active species. The safest “best” tank mate is the one your aquarium can house at adult size, in its required group, without compromising water quality or your breeding goals.
