They are supported by care guidance for veiled and/or panther chameleons, but they are not a scientifically ranked “best” list: no comparative trial establishes which is easiest or most effective. Plant recommendations also vary by chameleon species, so treat these as a practical shortlist rather than a guarantee of safety for every chameleon.
Three plants with care-guide support
These options offer different shapes and roles in an enclosure. Choose based on the space you have, how you plan to arrange foliage and basking branches, and whether you can verify the plant’s treatment history.

Pothos (Epipremnum aureum)
Also called golden pothos or devil’s ivy, this trailing plant can provide foliage and cover. ReptiFiles lists pothos among plants it describes as nontoxic for veiled chameleons. That species-specific listing is useful guidance, not a universal safety certification or proof that an individual nursery plant is free of pesticides or fertilizer residues. ReptiFiles’ veiled chameleon plant list provides the plant-specific reference.
Hibiscus (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis and other Hibiscus species)
Hibiscus is a flowering option with broad leaves. PetMD names hibiscus as a broad-leafed habitat addition for veiled chameleons, and a panther chameleon care guide includes it among recommended live plants. Confirm the plant’s identity and ask the nursery about pesticide and fertilizer use; the species recommendation does not establish the history of a specific plant. PetMD’s veiled chameleon care guide and the panther chameleon care guide provide the relevant guidance.

Weeping fig (Ficus benjamina)
Use the full species name when shopping: “ficus” can refer to many plants, while weeping fig is the plant specifically named in these recommendations. PetMD recommends ficus among broad-leafed habitat additions; ReptiFiles lists weeping fig as nontoxic for veiled chameleons; and the panther guide recommends weeping fig. As with the other choices, those recommendations do not verify a store-bought plant’s chemical treatment. PetMD, ReptiFiles, and the panther chameleon care guide cover this plant.
How to choose for your enclosure
There is no evidence in these care sources to score the three plants by ease, price, survival, or measured effectiveness. Instead, match the plant’s form to the enclosure and verify its growing history.

Arrange foliage without blocking basking
Plants can add hiding cover and habitat structure. PetMD says live plants help retain humidity, while the panther guide describes canopy plants as shelter, climbing enrichment, and surfaces that collect mist. These are qualitative husbandry benefits, not measured humidity gains or a substitute for species-appropriate enclosure conditions.
PetMD advises placing denser cover on one side and leaving a more exposed area with branches for basking. Arrange the plant so foliage adds usable cover and climbing structure without obstructing the basking area. PetMD’s veiled chameleon guide describes this layout.

Check a nursery plant before adding it
- Confirm the plant’s identity, especially when buying a ficus; look for Ficus benjamina if you want the weeping fig named in these guides.
- Ask the nursery whether the plant has been treated with pesticides or grown with fertilizers, and whether it can provide reliable treatment information.
- Use a plant only when you are satisfied that its treatment history is appropriate for your enclosure. PetMD says live plants should be nontoxic and pesticide-free; a care-guide listing alone cannot establish that a particular plant meets those conditions.
- Place it to preserve the enclosure’s basking area and intended cover, then follow the husbandry requirements for your chameleon species.
These recommendations concern enclosure plants, not dietary requirements. The cited guidance does not establish that a chameleon needs to eat any of these plants.
