Their reputation depends on the place and period: in some stories they bring misfortune, while in others they symbolize good fortune. The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County puts it plainly: “Absolutely not!” to the question of whether black cats are really bad luck. That is a museum’s answer to a superstition, not a scientific finding.
13 facts about black cats, luck and their reputation
-
Bad luck is a belief, not a property of cats
No evidence here shows that a cat’s coat color can bring good or bad fortune. “Lucky” and “unlucky” describe human beliefs that vary across cultures and history.

One European bad-luck story dates to the 1200s
The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County traces one European account to the 1200s, when rumors linked black cats with the devil. That is one regional history of the superstition, not a universal origin for every black-cat tradition. Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County

In southern England, black cats could be wedding gifts
A 2024 paper gives an example from southern England in which black cats were considered lucky wedding gifts. The custom shows how the same coat color associated with misfortune in one story could signify good fortune in another. “Explicit and Implicit Measures of Black Cat Bias in Cat and Dog People”

Black cats were once treated as lucky aboard British ships
The same paper reports that black cats were required aboard British ships as good-luck omens until 1975. This is a historical claim about British ships, not a description of sailors everywhere or of current practice.
-
There is no single worldwide black-cat tradition
The examples span different places and periods: a European bad-luck narrative, a southern English wedding custom and a belief associated with British ships. They are reminders that folklore changes with its context; none establishes what all people believe.

Black fur has a genetic explanation
A study of cat-family melanism reports that a two-base-pair deletion in the ASIP gene specifies black coloration in domestic cats. This identifies a genetic basis described in that paper; it does not mean ASIP is the only mechanism that can affect coat color. “Molecular genetics and evolution of melanism in the cat family”

Adoption findings depend on what researchers measured
A shelter study tracked real outcomes for cats at one Kentucky public shelter, while a separate study asked people to judge online photos. One measured adoptions and euthanasia; the other measured perceptions. Neither design can tell us that every shelter, adopter or black cat will have the same outcome.

One Kentucky shelter study found different outcomes by coat-color category
Researchers analyzed 7,983 cats admitted to one urban public shelter in Kentucky during 2010–2011. In that dataset, black cats had the lowest adoption percentage, 10.0%, and the highest euthanasia percentage, 74.6%, among the coat-color categories. The authors described support for “Black Cat Bias” as weak; these figures are not national rates. “Coat Color and Cat Outcomes in an Urban U.S. Shelter”
-
A 2024 study tested judgments of photos, not shelter outcomes
In a separate U.S. online-photo study, 1,004 participants evaluated cat adoption photographs. The study examined perceptions of adoptability and expression, not whether the cats were later adopted. Its results should not be treated as a measure of actual adoption rates. “Do Black Cats Look Less Adoptable? Human Judgments of Emotions and Adoptability in Online Shelter Photographs in the United States”

Measured superstition did not significantly affect those photo judgments
The study found that its measures of superstition and skin-color bias did not significantly affect participants’ ratings. That result is specific to the measures and judgments in this study; it does not prove that bias never influences decisions in other settings.

-
Coat color does not establish personality
The cited folklore and adoption studies do not show that black fur predicts a cat’s temperament, compatibility or behavior. A cat’s individual needs and character cannot be read from its color.
-
A black cat’s luck is a human story
Black cats have been cast as omens of opposite kinds, even within the examples above. The dependable takeaway is not that one tradition is correct, but that these labels reflect human stories—not a cat’s ability to bring luck.
