You can make an occasional cat treat with ordinary ingredients: bake crisp tuna biscuits, bake tiny tuna-and-catnip bites, or offer a few pieces of plain cooked meat or egg. These are snacks to use alongside a complete cat food, never replacements for it. No recipe below has been nutritionally tested for every cat, so portions, ingredients and frequency must match your cat’s health needs.
For a broad starting guardrail, the Cornell Feline Health Center advises keeping treats to 10 to 15 percent of a cat’s daily calories. A cat with a medical condition, food allergy, prescription diet or other dietary restriction should get a veterinarian’s advice before trying a new treat.

Choose the treat that fits your time and your cat
These three options differ mainly in preparation and ingredients. Two require baking and use tuna; the third is a no-bake serving of fully cooked meat or egg. None is proven healthier or more appealing than the others, because no comparative testing was performed.

1. Three-ingredient tuna biscuits
Battersea Dogs & Cats Home’s recipe, updated July 17, 2026, makes a simple dough from tuna, egg and flour. It is useful when you want small, firm pieces that can be broken into training rewards, but it does involve rolling and cutting.

Ingredients
- One tin of tuna in spring water
- One egg, whisked
- 210 g plain or wholemeal flour
Method
- Blend the tuna and whisked egg together.
- Mix in the flour until the mixture forms a dough.
- Roll the dough out and cut small shapes. Small pieces make it easier to keep a treat within the cat’s daily allowance.
- Place the shapes on a baking tray and bake at 180°C for 20–25 minutes, until crisp and golden.
- Cool the biscuits completely before offering one or putting them away.
Storage and suitability
Battersea says the cooled treats can be kept in a sealed container for up to one week and should be offered only occasionally. Its recipe is specifically unsuitable for cats with special dietary requirements. That warning also matters for cats on therapeutic diets, cats with known food reactions and cats whose veterinarian has set a restricted ingredient list. The flour and tuna combination has not been shown to provide a complete or balanced feline diet.
2. Small baked tuna bites
Chewy’s veterinarian-created recipe uses a shorter ingredient list by volume and adds catnip. The pieces are formed as very small balls rather than rolled and cut, so there is no need for a cookie cutter.
Ingredients
- One 5 oz can of tuna packed in water, drained
- One egg
- Three tablespoons of whole-wheat flour
- One teaspoon of catnip
Method
- Drain the tuna and combine it with the egg, whole-wheat flour and catnip.
- Mix until the ingredients hold together.
- Shape the mixture into very small balls. Keep them genuinely bite-sized; a larger ball can contribute more calories than intended and may be harder for a cat to manage.
- Bake at 400°F for 20 minutes.
- Let the bites cool before serving.
Storage and daily amounts
Chewy gives a refrigerator storage window of 10–14 days. Use a clean, covered container and discard anything that develops an off smell, visible mold or another sign of spoilage. The page also presents a suggested daily count, but a fixed number cannot apply to every cat: calorie needs vary with body size, age, activity, body condition and the rest of the diet. Use the Cornell 10–15 percent calorie guideline instead, and ask a veterinarian if your cat has a health issue or you are uncertain about an appropriate amount.

3. Plain cooked chicken or egg morsels
This is the lowest-effort option because it does not require a dough, oven or specialty equipment. Veterinarian Jennifer Coates, writing for PetMD, lists strips of cooked chicken, turkey, beef or lamb and cooked egg as simple foods that can be offered as treats.
How to prepare them
- Cook the meat or egg fully.
- Keep it plain. Do not add sauces, spice mixes or ingredients from the hazard list below.
- Cut the food into small pieces before offering it.
- Give a small amount and monitor the cat when introducing the new food.
The PetMD guidance does not establish a storage period or a nutritionally complete recipe for these morsels. Treat them as occasional extras, not as a meal plan. If your cat has never eaten one of these proteins, introduce only one new food at a time so that a digestive reaction or other intolerance is easier to notice.
How much is safe?
Cornell’s Feline Health Center gives this rule of thumb: “A good rule of thumb is to not let treats exceed 10 to 15 percent of a cat’s daily caloric intake.” This is a veterinary guideline, not a named study statistic. It means the treat allowance shrinks when a cat eats a calorie-dense diet or needs a weight-control plan.

Because these recipes do not provide verified calorie counts, do not assume that one biscuit, one ball or one meat piece represents the same fraction of every cat’s allowance. Start with the smallest practical piece, count treats as part of the day’s intake and reduce or stop them if your veterinarian has given a stricter limit. A cat gaining weight, losing weight unexpectedly or showing digestive symptoms needs an individual assessment rather than a recipe adjustment based on guesswork.
Homemade treats are not complete cat food
Cornell explains that formulating a nutritionally complete homemade cat diet is difficult. Cats need a precise balance of nutrients, and a short recipe made for treats does not supply that balance. Feed a complete commercial cat food as the nutritional foundation unless a veterinarian has prescribed a specifically formulated home diet for a medical purpose.
The three ideas here are therefore occasional snacks alongside the regular diet. They should not replace breakfast, dinner or a complete-and-balanced food, even if a cat prefers their taste.

Ingredients and foods to avoid
Several ordinary human foods can be dangerous for cats. Cornell identifies these hazards:
- Onions
- Grapes and raisins
- Avocado
- Chocolate
- Anything containing xylitol
Do not improvise by adding these foods to a dough or by sharing a seasoned human dish. The safest interpretation of “plain” is a single cooked protein or egg with no sauce, stock cube, onion, garlic, sweetener or dessert ingredient.

Why raw meat is not a shortcut
Do not serve raw meat as a homemade treat. Cornell notes the risks of toxoplasmosis and other infectious diseases. Cooking the meat fully removes the raw-meat route described in that guidance; it does not make every seasoned or mixed human food appropriate.

Why milk is unreliable
Milk is not a dependable treat either. Cornell notes that many cats are lactose-intolerant and may develop gastrointestinal problems after consuming it. A cat enjoying the taste does not prove that milk agrees with its digestion.
Introducing a new treat without creating a problem
- Check the diet first. Confirm that the treat’s ingredients are allowed under your cat’s normal or prescribed diet.
- Offer one new recipe at a time. Mixing several new foods makes it difficult to identify the cause of vomiting, diarrhea, itching or refusal.
- Use a tiny first portion. A small taste lets you observe tolerance without using much of the daily treat allowance.
- Watch during and after eating. Small pieces reduce the chance of a cat trying to swallow a large, hard piece whole. Monitor for digestive or other unusual reactions.
- Stop if symptoms appear. Contact your veterinarian if signs persist, are severe or occur in a cat with a known medical condition.
- Keep the regular food consistent. Treats should remain a minor part of the diet so that the cat continues to receive its complete food.
Which recipe should you use?
Choose tuna biscuits when you want a crisp, cut-out treat
The Battersea version has only three ingredients and produces firm biscuits, but it requires a dough, rolling and cutting. Its one-week sealed-container guidance is shorter than the refrigerator window given for the other baked recipe, and it is explicitly unsuitable for special-diet cats.
Choose tuna bites when you want small balls and catnip
The Chewy version avoids rolling and cutting. It uses a 5 oz can, whole-wheat flour and a teaspoon of catnip, then bakes for 20 minutes at 400°F. Its 10–14-day refrigerator guidance applies to that recipe as published; it does not turn the treats into a complete diet or establish a universal daily portion.
Choose cooked morsels when you need the simplest preparation
Plain cooked chicken, turkey, beef, lamb or egg needs no baking project. It is also the easiest option to adapt to a protein your veterinarian has approved. The trade-off is that the source gives no standardized recipe or storage period, so portions and handling need individual judgment.
When to ask your veterinarian first
Get professional advice before changing treats if your cat has kidney disease, diabetes, digestive disease, a suspected food allergy, obesity, a prescription diet or any other medical condition or dietary restriction. Battersea specifically excludes cats with special dietary requirements, and Chewy advises consulting a veterinarian for cats with health issues or when an owner has concerns. A veterinarian can also tell you whether the 10–15 percent general guideline is too generous for your cat.
For a healthy cat eating a complete diet, one of these recipes can be an occasional, carefully portioned snack. Keep the ingredients plain, avoid raw meat and known hazards, cool baked treats fully, and let the cat’s total calories—not a recipe’s suggested count—set the limit.
