Cats are not mysterious because they lack signals; they are mysterious because many of their signals are specialized. Whiskers read the surrounding air, purrs have a precise physical mechanism, scratching serves a marking purpose, and even a litter box can succeed or fail according to an individual cat’s preferences. These 31 facts explain what those behaviors and traits mean—and where broad cat rules stop applying.
31 fascinating cat facts
1. A cat’s whiskers are called vibrissae
The long hairs around a cat’s muzzle are not ordinary fur. International Cat Care identifies them as vibrissae, specialized sensory structures. Their position on the face makes them easy to notice, but their importance comes from the information they collect rather than their appearance.

2. Whiskers are highly sensitive
Vibrissae are highly sensitive to changes in the environment. That sensitivity is why whiskers belong in any explanation of feline awareness: they function as sensory equipment, not decoration.
3. Whiskers help with spatial orientation
International Cat Care says whiskers support spatial orientation. In practical terms, they contribute to a cat’s awareness of where its body is in relation to nearby surroundings, adding information beyond ordinary vision.

4. Whiskers detect air pressure
The same source notes that whiskers help detect air pressure. A cat therefore receives information from subtle changes in the air around its face, even when an object is not being touched directly.
5. Whiskers detect air currents
Whiskers also detect currents in the air. Together with their role in orientation, this makes them part of a cat’s environmental-sensing system and explains why treating them as ordinary hairs misses their function.
6. Purring occurs during the in-breath
Smithsonian’s explanation of purring describes the sound being produced while a cat breathes in. The sound is therefore tied to the respiratory cycle rather than being a simple behavior that occurs only at one emotional moment.

7. Purring also occurs during the out-breath
Purring continues during exhalation as well as inhalation. The in-and-out pattern helps explain why a purr can sound continuous while the cat is breathing normally.
8. Laryngeal muscles change the glottis during a purr
According to the Smithsonian account, laryngeal muscles alter the glottis—the opening in the voice box. That movement is a physical part of how the purring sound is generated.
9. Vocal-fold separations create the purring sound
The changing glottis produces separations at the vocal folds, which create the characteristic vibration heard as a purr. This is a mechanical explanation of sound production, not a claim about what the cat feels.

10. Purring is nearly ubiquitous among cats
The Smithsonian source describes purring as nearly ubiquitous among cats. “Nearly” matters: it indicates how widespread the ability is without turning it into an absolute rule for every species or individual.
11. Lions and tigers are not heard purring
The same explanation distinguishes domestic-cat-style purring from the vocalizations of lions and tigers, in which purring is not heard. A familiar house-cat sound is therefore not shared identically across all large and small felines.
12. A purr does not automatically mean contentment
The purring mechanism explains how the sound is made, but it does not establish one universal emotional meaning. A purr should not be treated as proof that a cat is happy in every situation; its context and the animal’s other signals still matter.
13. Scratching is normal cat behavior
Cornell describes scratching as normal behavior. Scratching furniture is frustrating for people, but the behavior itself is not evidence that a cat is being spiteful or abnormal.
14. Scratching has a marking function
Scratching is also a form of marking. Cornell’s guidance frames it as a behavior with a communicative purpose, which is why simply trying to suppress it can miss the reason the cat performs it.
15. A scratching substitute should match the cat’s preferred orientation
Cornell recommends matching a substitute to the cat’s preferred orientation. Some cats seek a vertical surface, while others use a horizontal one; the useful choice is the orientation the individual already favors.

16. The substitute’s surface material matters too
Orientation is only one part of the match. Cornell also advises considering surface material, because a cat’s established preference can determine whether it uses the alternative instead of household furniture.
17. Dedicated play time can address boredom
Cornell recommends dedicated play when boredom contributes to unwanted or destructive behavior. Scheduling time for play treats enrichment as a routine need rather than waiting for a cat to invent its own activity.
18. Active play with a person is the best outlet in this guidance
The Cornell recommendation specifically favors time actively playing with the cat. That makes human participation part of the suggested response when a cat needs a better outlet for energy and engagement.

Cornell also recommends acceptable toys. The point is not that one toy works for every cat, but that the cat should have an approved way to express play behavior instead of redirecting it toward unsuitable objects.
20. Most cats prefer simple, uncovered litter boxes
Cornell reports that most cats prefer simple, uncovered boxes. This is a population-level preference, not a guarantee for an individual cat, but it is a sensible starting point when setting up a box.
21. Not every cat prefers an uncovered box
The qualification is essential: Cornell says not all cats share that preference. A covered or differently designed box may suit a particular animal, so refusal should not be interpreted as proof that every cat dislikes the same setup.

22. Many cats prefer unscented litter
Unscented litter is another preference Cornell associates with most cats. Fragrance that seems pleasant to a person is not automatically preferable to the animal using the box.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems23. Fine-textured litter is commonly preferred
Cornell also identifies fine texture as a common preference. Texture is therefore one of the variables to consider when a cat avoids a box, alongside the box design itself.
24. Kittens may need lower-sided boxes
Young kittens may benefit from lower sides. A lower entry accommodates their smaller bodies and is one of the age-related adjustments Cornell includes in its litter guidance.
25. Older cats with arthritis may also need lower sides
Lower sides can help older cats with arthritis as well. Cornell’s point is functional: a box that is easy to enter can be more suitable when movement is painful or restricted.
26. Pedigreed cats are more predictable in size and appearance
Cornell says a pedigreed cat’s size and appearance are more likely to fit its breed profile. “More likely” is the important wording; a breed description is a tendency, not a promise about every individual.
27. Breed profiles can predict personality to some extent
Personality is also somewhat more likely to align with a breed profile in pedigreed cats. The qualification prevents a breed label from being treated as a complete behavioral forecast.

28. Mixed-breed adult size and appearance are less predictable
For mixed-breed cats, Cornell says adult size and appearance are less predictable. A kitten’s eventual look cannot be guaranteed simply from a general description or an early impression.
29. Adopting a cat can mean a 10-to-15-year commitment or longer
Cornell’s adoption guide describes the commitment as 10–15 years or more, depending on the cat’s age. This is a planning estimate for the responsibility of adoption, not an average-lifespan statistic for every cat.
30. Cornell considers cats older at about 12–14 years
In its senior-cat guidance, Cornell describes cats as older at 12–14 years. That age category is a veterinary framework for paying closer attention, not a prediction that a particular cat will become ill at a specific birthday.

Richard Goldstein, DVM, an assistant professor in small animal medicine at Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, states: “Growing older is not a disease.” The quote captures the central senior-cat lesson: age is a stage, while new or worsening changes still deserve consideration.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When an older cat’s behavior changes
Lower activity can be age-related, but context matters
Cornell notes that older cats may be less active, sleep more, or have difficulty reaching favored places. Those changes should not automatically be dismissed as “just old age,” because the same outward pattern can have a medical explanation.
Disorientation and nighttime vocalizing need attention
In cats commonly 10 or older, Cornell lists disorientation, altered sleep–wake cycles, and loud nighttime vocalizing among signs that can accompany cognitive aging. These observations describe possible signs, not a diagnosis based on one behavior.
Several illnesses can resemble cognitive aging
Cornell cautions that pain, kidney disease, hyperthyroidism, hypertension, and other conditions can produce related changes. That overlap is why a gradual or sudden behavioral shift is worth discussing with a veterinarian instead of being written off solely to age.
Quick Recap
How to use these facts at home
- Observe the individual cat before applying a general rule: litter, scratching surfaces, and play outlets are preference-sensitive.
- Provide an approved scratching option that matches both the cat’s preferred direction and material.
- Build active play into the routine and offer acceptable toys as additional outlets.
- Reassess litter-box access for kittens and for older cats with arthritis; lower sides may improve usability.
- When an older cat’s activity, sleep, orientation, or vocalizing changes, treat the pattern as information to evaluate rather than proof of normal aging.
