Short answer: no dog is truly hypoallergenic or allergy-free. The 33 breeds in this guide are commonly considered lower-shedding or potentially less allergenic, but any individual dog can still trigger symptoms.
Dog allergens are proteins associated with dander, skin flakes, saliva, and urine. Fur can also carry pollen, mold, dust, and other environmental allergens. Treat this list as a way to compare coat care, size, energy, and household fit—not as a medical safety ranking. If you have asthma, wheezing, hives, or significant respiratory symptoms, consult an allergist before adopting or purchasing a dog.

How to read this list
These breeds are grouped by approximate size, not ranked from safest to least safe. “Hypoallergenic” is a useful search term, but it is not a medical guarantee. The most suitable choice depends on your symptoms, the individual dog, your household’s activity level, and how much grooming you can realistically manage.

Small dogs commonly considered lower-shedding
Affenpinscher
The Affenpinscher is a compact companion with a wiry coat. It may appeal to someone who wants a small dog, but its coat should not be treated as self-cleaning or low-maintenance. Plan for regular coat care and evaluate the individual dog rather than assuming the breed will be comfortable for every allergy sufferer.
American Hairless Terrier
This small, lively breed has little or no hair, but hairlessness is not the same as being allergen-free. Skin flakes and saliva can still contain dog allergens, so bathing and skin care remain part of ownership. It is a possible compact-dog option, not a guarantee for a person with allergies.
Bichon Frise
The Bichon Frise is a small, sociable companion whose coat grows continuously and needs regular grooming. Keeping the coat brushed and free of mats is a significant commitment. Its lower-shedding coat may be better tolerated by some people, but it does not prevent allergic reactions.
Bolognese
The Bolognese is a small bichon-type companion with a long coat. Its appeal for allergy-sensitive households comes from commonly perceived lower shedding, not from an absence of allergens. Expect routine brushing, grooming, and attention to social needs.
Chinese Crested
The Chinese Crested is available in hairless and coated varieties. The hairless variety may leave less loose fur around the home, but it still produces allergenic proteins and needs skin care. The coated variety also requires coat maintenance. Meet the specific dog before making a decision.
Coton de Tulear
This small, cheerful companion has a long coat that requires frequent grooming. The coat can trap loose hair and debris, and neglected grooming can lead to mats. A Coton may suit a household seeking a small companion willing to commit to regular coat care, but no individual dog is guaranteed to be tolerated.
Maltese
The Maltese has a long, silky coat and is commonly considered a lower-shedding small companion. When the coat is kept long, daily or near-daily care may be necessary; a shorter trim can change the workload but does not remove allergenic proteins. Include grooming time in your decision, not just the dog’s small size.

Miniature Schnauzer
The Miniature Schnauzer is a compact, trainable terrier with a wiry coat. It can be a strong starting point for someone who wants a small dog and is prepared for routine coat maintenance. It is not a no-maintenance breed, and its activity and training needs still need to fit the household.
Toy Poodle
The Toy Poodle combines a small size with a curly coat and high intelligence. Grooming is central to keeping that coat manageable, and mental stimulation is equally important. It may be a practical size for some homes, but the allergy question must still be answered by exposure to the particular dog.
Lhasa Apso
The Lhasa Apso is a small, long-coated companion commonly considered lower-shedding. A long coat is grooming-intensive, especially if it is allowed to grow out, so regular brushing and professional or at-home trimming should be planned. Lower shedding may reduce loose hair; it does not make the dog allergy-safe.

Shih Tzu
The Shih Tzu has a continuously growing coat that needs regular grooming. Its small size can make exercise and household management easier for some owners, but grooming remains a real obligation. Reactions vary from person to person and from dog to dog.
Yorkshire Terrier
The Yorkshire Terrier has a silky coat and a compact body. Keeping the coat long is grooming-intensive, while a shorter trim can make daily care more manageable. Either way, the dog can still spread allergens through dander and saliva.
Havanese
The Havanese is a small companion with a soft coat that needs regular brushing and grooming. It can suit someone looking for a small dog rather than a working breed, provided the household can maintain the coat and manage exposure consistently.
Brussels Griffon
Brussels Griffons occur in rough- and smooth-coated types. That coat difference affects grooming and may affect how much loose hair is present in the home, but it cannot predict whether a person will react. Compare the coat type and spend time with the individual dog before adoption or purchase.
Scottish Terrier
The Scottish Terrier is a small, independent terrier with a wiry coat that needs maintenance. It may fit an owner who wants a compact dog but is ready for a more demanding terrier personality and consistent care. Its size should not be mistaken for a guarantee of easy behavior or allergy tolerance.

The West Highland White Terrier is a small, active terrier with a coat that needs regular grooming. It may be a reasonable option for an allergy-sensitive household that can provide training and activity as well as coat care. A visit with the particular dog is more informative than the breed label alone.
Wire Fox Terrier
The Wire Fox Terrier has a wiry coat and high activity needs. It may work for an energetic owner who can provide exercise, training, and regular coat maintenance, but it is not simply a small, easy allergy-friendly pet.
Medium-sized options
Bedlington Terrier
The Bedlington Terrier is a small-to-medium terrier with a distinctive woolly coat. That coat is a major ownership consideration because it needs regular, knowledgeable grooming. It can appeal to someone seeking a compact terrier, but the breed’s coat and behavior should both be evaluated in person.
Barbet
The Barbet is a medium water dog with a curly coat. Its exercise needs are substantial, and its coat requires recurring care to remain manageable. It is more appropriate for an active household that wants a working-style dog than for someone choosing solely on the basis of low shedding.
Kerry Blue Terrier
The Kerry Blue Terrier is a medium terrier with a soft, curly coat. Regular grooming is necessary, and structured activity and training are important parts of the fit. Its coat may be lower-shedding than that of many dogs, but it is not an allergy-proof coat.

Lagotto Romagnolo
The Lagotto Romagnolo is a medium, curly-coated sporting dog. It needs physical exercise and mental engagement, along with recurring grooming. Consider it when the household wants an active dog and has a realistic plan for coat care—not merely because the coat is curly.
Miniature Poodle
The Miniature Poodle is a small-to-medium poodle variety with a curly coat, high intelligence, and strong trainability. It is often a useful size for people seeking a versatile companion, but mental stimulation, exercise, and regular home or professional grooming are central to ownership.
Standard Schnauzer
The Standard Schnauzer is a medium working terrier with a wiry coat. It is energetic and alert, so consistent training matters as much as grooming. It may suit an active, engaged owner, but it should not be selected as a passive or automatically allergy-safe pet.

The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier is a medium, cheerful terrier with a soft coat that mats easily without regular brushing and grooming. The coat can be attractive to people looking for a lower-shedding dog, but preventing mats requires ongoing work and does not eliminate allergens.
Spanish Water Dog
The Spanish Water Dog is a medium working breed with a curly or corded coat. It needs exercise and knowledgeable coat management, particularly if the coat is being maintained in cords. This is a working-dog commitment as well as an allergy-sensitive household decision.
Irish Terrier
The Irish Terrier is a medium, active terrier with a wiry coat. It is best considered by owners prepared for regular exercise, training, and grooming. A lower-shedding coat cannot compensate for a mismatch between the dog’s activity needs and the household’s routine.
Large dogs commonly considered lower-shedding
Afghan Hound
The Afghan Hound is a large, elegant breed with a long coat. Its lower-shedding reputation should never be confused with low grooming demand: the coat requires substantial, consistent care. Choose it only if you want the breed’s size and lifestyle as well as its coat characteristics.

Giant Schnauzer
The Giant Schnauzer is a large, powerful, active working dog with a wiry coat. It is better suited to experienced owners who can provide training, exercise, and coat maintenance. It may be a potential large-dog option for some allergy-sensitive people, but its working-dog demands are more important than its shedding profile alone.
Irish Water Spaniel
The Irish Water Spaniel is a large sporting breed with a curly coat and significant exercise needs. It may fit an active household with the time and knowledge to manage both exercise and grooming. It should not be presented as a calm or automatically safe choice for people with allergies.
Standard Poodle
The Standard Poodle is large, athletic, intelligent, and commonly considered one of the stronger fits for an active family seeking a lower-shedding coat. That does not make it allergy-free. Regular grooming and substantial physical and mental engagement are necessary.

Portuguese Water Dog

Peruvian Inca Orchid
The Peruvian Inca Orchid may be hairless or coated and comes in varied sizes. Hairlessness does not remove the proteins that cause dog allergies, and skin care and protection remain important. The variation between individuals makes meeting the specific dog especially important.
Xoloitzcuintli
The Xoloitzcuintli is a Mexican breed available in hairless and coated varieties and multiple sizes. The hairless form may produce less loose fur, but it is not allergen-free. Skin care, the individual dog’s tolerance, and the household’s ability to control exposure all matter.
Why no dog is truly hypoallergenic
Dog allergies are caused by proteins associated with dander, skin flakes, saliva, and urine. Fur can also carry pollen, mold, dust, and other environmental allergens into the home. Because these proteins are not confined to loose hair, removing or reducing shedding cannot remove allergy risk.
Some breeds are commonly considered less allergenic because their coats shed less predictably or retain more loose hair until grooming. That can reduce the amount of hair circulating through a home, but it does not establish a medically safe breed. Even dogs of the same breed can produce or spread different amounts of allergen, and a person can react strongly to one dog but less strongly to another.

The American Kennel Club’s breed information supports using coat characteristics as one factor in breed selection, not treating its list as a medically validated ranking. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose among the 33
1. Start with your symptoms, not the breed name
If contact with dogs causes persistent nasal symptoms, coughing, wheezing, hives, or breathing difficulty, speak with an allergist before bringing a dog home. Formal allergy testing and a personalized management plan are more reliable than an internet list. People with asthma or significant respiratory symptoms should be especially cautious.
2. Test your reaction to the specific dog
Spend meaningful time with the exact dog you are considering, rather than visiting only a breeder’s general kennel or assuming that every member of a breed will affect you identically. Where practical, arrange repeated exposure or a trial period before making a permanent commitment. Do not treat a symptom-free short visit as proof that long-term cohabitation will be symptom-free.
3. Match activity to your real routine
Several breeds on this list are active working, sporting, or terrier dogs. Standard and Miniature Poodles, Portuguese Water Dogs, Irish Water Spaniels, Lagotto Romagnoli, Spanish Water Dogs, Giant Schnauzers, Standard Schnauzers, and many terriers need exercise, training, or mental stimulation. A lower-shedding coat is not a substitute for meeting a dog’s daily needs.
As a starting framework, someone wanting a small companion might compare a Bichon Frise, Maltese, Havanese, Toy Poodle, Miniature Schnauzer, or Shih Tzu. Someone wanting a larger, active dog might investigate a Standard Poodle or Portuguese Water Dog. These are lifestyle shortlists, not allergy-safety rankings.

4. Price in the grooming workload
Curly, wiry, woolly, corded, and continuously growing coats commonly require recurring brushing, bathing, trimming, or professional grooming. Long coats such as those of the Afghan Hound, Maltese, Lhasa Apso, Shih Tzu, Yorkshire Terrier, Bolognese, and Coton de Tulear can demand especially consistent care. Hairless dogs exchange some coat work for skin care and bathing; they are not maintenance-free.
Use a dog grooming brush for low-shedding dogs suited to the coat rather than buying a generic tool and assuming it will work for every breed. Brushing can help manage loose hair and keep the coat from matting, but it does not remove allergenic proteins. Ideally, a non-allergic household member should brush the dog outdoors or in another well-ventilated area, not an allergy-sensitive person inside the home.
5. Decide your exposure rules before adoption
Agree in advance that the dog will stay out of the allergy sufferer’s bedroom. Consider limiting access to upholstered furniture and identify who will handle brushing, bathing, bedding, and vacuuming. A clear plan is easier to follow than trying to establish boundaries after symptoms begin.
Setting up an allergy-sensitive home
These steps may reduce exposure, but none makes a dog allergy-safe:
- Create a dog-free bedroom: Keep the dog out consistently, close the door when possible, and wash bedding regularly.
- Control upholstered surfaces: Limit access to sofas, fabric chairs, and other surfaces that can hold dander and hair.
- Clean floors and furniture: Use a HEPA vacuum for pet hair and dander or another high-efficiency vacuum regularly on carpets, floors, and upholstery. Vacuuming redistributes some particles temporarily, so follow the equipment’s instructions and allow settled dust to clear before spending extended time in the area.
- Filter frequently occupied rooms: A HEPA air purifier for pet dander may reduce airborne allergenic particles in a room. It cannot remove allergens from the dog, eliminate settled dander, or guarantee that a severely allergic person will tolerate living with the dog.
- Wash pet bedding: Clean the dog’s bed and washable blankets regularly so they do not become concentrated allergen reservoirs.
- Keep grooming consistent: Discuss bathing frequency and coat care with a veterinarian or experienced groomer. More bathing is not automatically better, particularly for a hairless dog or a dog with sensitive skin.
- Wash your hands: Wash after petting or grooming, especially before touching your face, eating, or going to bed.
- Manage clothing and outdoor exposure: Keeping a dog outdoors is not a complete solution. Allergens can enter the home on clothing, and outdoor conditions can add pollen, mold, and dust to the dog’s coat.
These measures are exposure-control strategies, not a cure. Avoiding the allergen remains the most reliable way to manage an established allergy, and medication or immunotherapy decisions should be made with an allergist.
Pre-adoption checklist
- Have you discussed the plan with an allergist if you have recurring or significant symptoms?
- Have you spent time with the specific dog you may bring home?
- Can you arrange repeated exposure or a practical trial period where appropriate?
- Does the dog’s exercise and training requirement match your household?
- Who will brush, bathe, trim, and professionally groom the dog?
- Can brushing happen outdoors or away from the allergy-sensitive person?
- Will the dog stay out of the bedroom?
- Do you have a plan for vacuuming, washing bedding, and managing upholstery?
- Can you use filtration and cleaning to reduce exposure without treating them as guarantees?
- What is your contingency plan if symptoms become difficult to control?
The bottom line
The 33 breeds above may be lower-shedding or better tolerated by some people, but none is truly hypoallergenic. The safest choice is not determined by a breed label alone: meet the individual dog, match its energy and grooming needs to your household, establish exposure controls, and consult an allergist if symptoms include asthma, wheezing, hives, or significant breathing problems.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are any dogs 100% hypoallergenic?
No. All dogs produce proteins associated with allergies, including allergens found in dander, saliva, and urine. Some breeds shed less or may spread fewer allergens through loose hair, but no breed is guaranteed to be allergy-free or safe for every person.
Are hairless dogs better for people with allergies?
Not necessarily. Hairless dogs may leave less loose fur around the home, but they still produce allergenic proteins. They also need skin care and bathing, and individual reactions vary just as they do with coated dogs.
What is the best hypoallergenic dog for an allergy sufferer?
There is no single best breed for everyone with allergies. A better choice depends on your symptoms, reaction to the specific dog, desired size, activity level, and willingness to maintain the coat or skin. Meeting the individual dog is more useful than relying on a breed label alone.
Can grooming prevent dog-allergy symptoms?
Regular brushing, bathing, trimming, and professional grooming can help manage loose hair, mats, and some dander, but grooming does not remove the allergenic proteins that cause reactions. A non-allergic person should brush the dog outdoors when possible.
Should I see an allergist before getting a dog?
If dogs cause recurring symptoms, ask an allergist about evaluation and allergy testing before bringing one home. Seek professional medical advice promptly for wheezing, asthma symptoms, hives, or significant breathing problems.

No dog is completely hypoallergenic. Choose among these commonly considered lower-shedding breeds only after evaluating your symptoms, meeting the specific dog, and confirming that its exercise and grooming needs fit your life. Home cleaning and HEPA filtration may reduce exposure, but they cannot guarantee that living with a dog will be symptom-free.
