Yes, potentially—but as a screening aid, not a diagnosis. A 3D depth-video system can repeatedly measure changes in a cow’s body shape, gait and estimated weight, making deviations easier for staff to investigate. Early 3D studies reported promising classification and farm-operation results, while newer commercial studies mostly evaluate 2D cameras. None of these scores guarantees a disease diagnosis or better welfare unless the farm has a defined protocol for checking and treating animals that trigger an alert.
What 3D imaging can measure in cattle
A depth camera records distance as well as ordinary video. Software can turn that three-dimensional surface information into measurements without attaching a device to the cow. The proposed system described by Hansen and colleagues used one unobtrusive 3D video-capture device to gather information related to body condition, mobility or lameness and body weight during normal farm operation. The authors reported results comparable to or better than manual scoring in their study setup, and argued that each cow’s change across repeated observations may be more useful than relying only on an abstract score cutoff. Those findings apply to that equipment, software and farm experiment; they are not a performance guarantee for every 3D camera. Read the 2018 study.

For welfare monitoring, the important output is usually a trend. A single unusual posture may reflect a slippery floor, an obstruction or a cow turning in the passage. Repeatedly worsening gait asymmetry, a declining body-condition estimate or a sustained change in weight is more actionable because it identifies an individual that needs human assessment.

Three-dimensional data can describe the movement and shape of body regions such as the hooks and spine. A 2016 Biosystems Engineering research note derived gait-asymmetry features from depth images and used a linear support-vector machine (SVM) for a binary lameness classification. Its reported overall accuracy was 95.7% for that experiment and task. The figure is not sensitivity, specificity or a universal diagnostic rate, and it should not be transferred to another breed, camera position, flooring system or alert threshold. Body condition and weight
Surface geometry can also support estimates of body condition and live weight from the same capture event. The practical advantage is consistency: an automated system can collect observations while cows pass a camera, avoiding the variability that comes from different people scoring at different times. Estimates still need calibration against the farm’s animals and conditions, and a change in an estimate should prompt an examination rather than an automatic treatment decision.
What the evidence actually shows
The evidence has three distinct layers: early 3D research, validation of commercial camera systems (mostly 2D), and trials of management programs that use automated scores. Keeping these layers separate prevents a promising laboratory or farm prototype from being presented as a proven commercial welfare monitor.
Early 3D studies
The Hansen study evaluated a low-cost, unobtrusive approach under continuous farm conditions and reported performance comparable to or better than manual scoring for the traits it assessed. The 2016 study’s 95.7% result came from a binary classifier built from 3D depth imagery. Together, they show that depth data can contain useful signals about mobility and body shape. They do not establish how the systems perform across many farms, breeds, camera installations or disease patterns.

How common is external validation?
A 2021 systematic review started with 1,111 publications and retained 42 studies describing 30 tools, including prototypes, that met its external-validation requirements. In a separate market search, the authors identified 129 marketed technologies from 67 providers in 21 countries; only 18 listed sensors had an external validation record, or 14% of that snapshot. The review identified 10 vision-based products and reported lower validation rates for cameras than for accelerometer-based products. These counts describe the market and publications available when the review was conducted, not the current number of products. Read the 2021 systematic review.
Commercial camera validation is mostly 2D
More recent commercial studies generally use ordinary video rather than a 3D depth camera. Their results are relevant to automated mobility screening, but they are related evidence—not proof that a particular 3D method is commercially deployed or equivalent.
A 2023 validation study assessed a commercially available video-surveillance system on three dairy farms. It compared 6,040 automated mobility scores with assessments from two veterinarians and examined whether scores predicted potentially painful foot lesions recorded during trimming. This is evidence about agreement and prediction in that system and population, not proof that camera alerts improve health outcomes. Review the 2023 validation study.

A 2025 evaluation on 11 UK dairy farms found that agreement depended on the statistic and the threshold used. Weighted kappa for a four-grade mobility scale was fair, while Gwet’s agreement coefficient was higher; binary agreement also varied by statistic. In one analysis, the automated system detected severe lesions with sensitivity 0.53 and specificity 0.74. A human mobility score reached sensitivity 0.60 and specificity 0.78. Scores for cows with severe lesions began rising before trimming, suggesting possible early-warning value, but the results should not be collapsed into one generic “accuracy” number. Does monitoring improve welfare?
Detecting a change and improving an outcome are different questions. The strongest evidence in the supplied studies comes from a 2026 randomized controlled trial of an automated-monitoring protocol, not from 3D imaging alone. The trial enrolled 419 multiparous cows at one large UK dairy farm. Intervention cows received weekly automated mobility scores and were examined when a predefined score threshold was reached or when recent scores increased by the specified amount. At the 180-day-in-milk trimming visit, 22.4% of intervention cows were lesion-free compared with 12.0% of controls. Moderate lesions occurred in 16.0% of intervention cows versus 25.3% of controls. The study found no difference in weekly average milk yield or culling risk. Fertility associations involved only a small subset of second-parity cows and should be interpreted cautiously. This trial evaluated 2D imaging integrated with a lameness-management protocol, rather than isolated 3D imaging. Read the randomized trial and the related repository record.
How an automated score should be used on a farm
A score is a prioritization signal. Its value depends on what happens after the alert.

- Establish a reference standard. Decide whether the farm will compare alerts with trained staff mobility scores, a veterinarian’s examination, trimming-session lesion records or a clinical outcome. These references answer different questions and should not be treated as interchangeable.
- Capture consistently. Install the camera where cows pass at a predictable distance and speed, keep the field of view clear, and ensure lighting and flooring do not change unpredictably. Record animal identity so that a trend belongs to the correct cow.
- Build an individual baseline. Collect repeated observations before setting alert rules. A relative change from a cow’s normal pattern can be more informative than applying one universal cutoff to every animal.
- Set an operational threshold. Define the score or increase that triggers review, how many consecutive observations are required, and how false alerts will be handled. Thresholds determine the balance between missed cases and unnecessary examinations.
- Examine the cow. Staff should observe locomotion, feet, legs, body condition, appetite and other relevant signs. The camera cannot determine the cause of an abnormal score.
- Apply the farm’s treatment pathway. Document foot inspection, veterinary referral, housing changes, analgesia or other interventions according to the farm veterinarian’s plan. A system without a response pathway only produces a dashboard.
- Audit performance locally. Compare alerts with examination and lesion records, calculate false-alert and missed-case patterns, and review performance after changes in flooring, traffic flow, trimming schedules or camera placement.
How 3D imaging compares with other monitoring approaches
| Approach | Typical traits | Reference needed for validation | Operational questions |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3D depth video | Body shape, relative body condition, estimated weight, gait or lameness features | Manual mobility scores, veterinary assessments, weight or body-condition records, lesion records | Can the camera see cows consistently? Is identity tracked? Are depth measurements stable across lighting and dirt? |
| 2D video | Visual mobility scores, posture and movement patterns | Veterinarian or trained scorer ratings and, where available, trimming lesions | Which threshold triggers examination, and how are repeated scores combined? |
| Wearable accelerometer | Activity, lying, standing and movement changes | Clinical examination, behavior observations or health records | Will devices stay attached, remain charged and be assigned to the right cow? |
| Combined sensor system | Mobility plus activity, body condition or behavior | Multiple standards matched to each output | Does combining signals improve decisions enough to justify extra installation and maintenance? |
Do not rank these approaches by a single accuracy percentage. A 95.7% binary-classification result, a sensitivity of 0.53, and an agreement coefficient from a four-grade scale come from different tasks and cannot be compared as if they measured the same thing.
What to check before adopting a 3D system
Validation and transparency
- Ask for external validation on farms and cattle populations similar to yours, not only an internal development test.
- Request sensitivity, specificity, false-alert rates and missed-case rates at the proposed operating threshold.
- Check whether the reference was a veterinarian, a trained mobility scorer, a lesion record or another sensor.
- Find out whether results are published and whether the system has been tested after installation changes.
Workflow and data
- Confirm how cows are identified and how duplicate, missing or poor-quality captures are handled.
- Plan camera placement, power, network access, cleaning and protection from dust, moisture and cow contact.
- Define who reviews alerts, within what time, and where examinations and treatments are recorded.
- Ensure staff can see the underlying trend rather than only a single unexplained score.
Do not confuse a component with a finished monitor
A generic 3D depth camera can be a reasonable prototype component for a researcher or developer, but buying a camera does not create a validated cattle-welfare system. Useful monitoring also requires mounting and lighting decisions, animal identification, image-processing software, calibration, secure data handling, a locally tested threshold and a management response. The cited 3D papers do not name a currently suitable consumer camera model or establish current hardware prices.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCommon failure modes and fixes
Too many alerts
Loose thresholds, changing camera views or inconsistent cow flow can create false positives. Review image quality and animal identification first, then tune thresholds using repeated observations and local examination records rather than simply suppressing alerts.

Missed lame cows
A cow may not pass the camera often enough, may be occluded by another animal or may show subtle signs outside the system’s validated range. Add a routine human walk-through and investigate missing data as a welfare risk, not as a normal “no alert” result.
Scores that drift after installation changes
Moving the camera, changing lighting, altering flooring or modifying traffic flow can change measurements without any biological change. Record configuration changes, recalibrate and treat the post-change period as a new validation phase.
Assuming an alert identifies the cause
Mobility changes can have several causes, including foot lesions, injury, pain elsewhere, poor footing or an acute environmental problem. The score should determine which cow is examined sooner; it should not determine a diagnosis by itself.

Bottom line for cattle keepers
Regular 3D imaging may make changes in mobility, body condition or weight easier to notice early, especially when the system follows each cow over time. The 2016 3D classifier’s 95.7% result and the 2018 farm study are encouraging but specific to their experiments. Commercial evidence is newer but largely 2D, and the 2026 trial shows that benefits are most credible when automated scores are embedded in a defined examination and treatment protocol. Choose a system only after checking external validation, local operating performance and the farm’s ability to act on every meaningful alert.
