4 Common Moths in Hawaii: Names, Identification Limits, and What to Do Next

The Oleander Hawk-moth, Black Witch, Pink-spotted hawkmoth, and Plain grey hawkmoth are commonly reported in Hawaii, but a sightings list is not a statewide abundance ranking. Here is how to document an unknown moth and get a careful identification.

The four moths most often listed as commonly reported in Hawaii are the Oleander Hawk-moth (Daphnis nerii), Black Witch (Ascalapha odorata), Pink-spotted hawkmoth (Agrius cingulata), and Plain grey hawkmoth (Psilogramma increta). They come from Butterflies and Moths of North America’s Hawaii regional sightings list, which combines reported observations rather than measuring statewide population size. In other words, these are useful names to start with when you ask “What moth is this?”, but the list does not prove they are Hawaii’s four most abundant moths.

The four commonly reported moths

BAMONA’s regional Hawaii page includes the following four species. The source supplies their common and scientific names, but it is not a complete field-identification key and does not rank the species by abundance.

Common name Scientific name What the Hawaii list establishes What it does not establish
Oleander Hawk-moth Daphnis nerii Included among commonly reported Hawaii moths A statewide population rank, seasonal peak, or diagnostic field marks
Black Witch Ascalapha odorata Included among commonly reported Hawaii moths That it is the most numerous large moth in Hawaii
Pink-spotted hawkmoth Agrius cingulata Included among commonly reported Hawaii moths A verified Hawaii-specific habitat, host plant, or abundance estimate
Plain grey hawkmoth Psilogramma increta Included among commonly reported Hawaii moths A reliable identification from a name alone or a statewide count

The order above is editorial, not a frequency ranking. A sighting list reflects what people submit or what a regional database records. It cannot substitute for a standardized survey using the same traps, dates, locations, and effort across the islands.

How to use these names when a moth appears

A common name is a starting point, not proof of identification. Several moths can look similar in a quick photograph, and the available regional list does not provide enough species-level description to identify every individual confidently. Treat the four names as candidates to investigate rather than labels to attach automatically.

Begin with a clear observation

  1. Photograph the moth without handling it. Take a side view, a dorsal view with the wings at rest if possible, and a scale reference such as a ruler placed nearby rather than under the insect.
  2. Record the date and exact locality. Island, town, trail, elevation, and whether the moth was indoors or outdoors can help an identifier assess the record.
  3. Note behavior and circumstances. Write down whether it was flying at night, resting on a wall, visiting a light, or found near a particular plant. These observations are clues, not a substitute for a confirmed identification.
  4. Keep the original files. Do not crop away the body, antennae, or wing edges. Preserve the unedited image and add close-ups as separate files.

Do not force an identification from a poor image

Blurred images, single silhouettes, and photographs showing only a wing often cannot support a species-level answer. A careful “hawkmoth, species uncertain” is more useful than a confident but incorrect name. If an expert later requests another angle, you can return to the same record with the date and location already documented.

Submitting a photograph for help

BAMONA provides a route for submitting dated and located butterfly and moth photographs. Its coordinator may review a submission, but a response is not guaranteed to be immediate. Include the island, locality, date, approximate size, and every useful view of the insect.

Caterpillar submissions need extra information. BAMONA notes that most larval stages of butterflies and moths are unknown and that caterpillar photographs can be very difficult to identify. If you know the plant the caterpillar was eating, include the plant’s name or several photographs of its leaves, stem, and surrounding growth. A host-plant record can be more informative than a close-up of the caterpillar alone.

Why caterpillars are harder to identify

Adult moths and their caterpillars may look completely different, and caterpillar color can change between molts. Lighting, camera exposure, and defensive posture can also alter the apparent pattern. Many caterpillar species have not been fully documented in every stage, so an expert may be able to narrow a photograph to a genus or family without assigning a species.

What to photograph

  • The entire caterpillar from the side, with the head and rear visible.
  • A top-down image showing body segments and markings.
  • The plant being eaten, including leaves and stems.
  • The surrounding habitat and any nearby webbing, shelter, frass, or feeding damage.
  • A size reference, such as a ruler beside the caterpillar.

Do not move a caterpillar onto an unfamiliar plant for a better picture. That can stress it, alter its behavior, or create an inaccurate host record. Photograph it where you found it whenever practical.

When a physical specimen is necessary

Most people can seek an initial identification from photographs and do not need to collect or kill a moth. If the University of Hawaii insect identification service requests a physical sample, follow its handling guidance carefully.

  1. Protect the wings. Place moth or butterfly wings between sheets of tissue so the scales are not rubbed away.
  2. Use a crush-proof container. A rigid container prevents damage during transport. Do not mail a loose specimen in a soft envelope.
  3. Record the collection data. Write the collection date, exact location, and host plant, if known, and keep those notes with the specimen.
  4. Contact the service before sending. Confirm current submission instructions, packaging requirements, and whether a photograph is sufficient.

Wing scales are easily lost through friction. A damaged specimen can be harder to identify than a carefully made photograph, so collection should be limited to cases where an identification service specifically needs it and local rules allow it.

What “common” means in this list

The phrase “commonly reported” describes the evidence behind the four names. It does not mean that every island has the same moths, that the species are equally numerous, or that they are present in every season. The Hawaii page is a mixed list of butterflies and moths assembled from reported observations, not a moth-only census.

Population abundance would require a different kind of evidence: repeated sampling across islands, elevations, habitats, and seasons with comparable effort. No such statewide counts or controlled seasonal data are supplied for these four species. Avoid interpreting the list as a league table or using it to estimate the chance of seeing one in a particular yard.

Hawaii’s moth fauna is much larger than four names

These familiar names sit within a much broader and still-changing Hawaiian moth fauna. A University of Hawaii System News report dated February 25, 2026 described the discovery of 10 new species and seven new genera of Hawaiian leaf-roller moths. Those newly described leaf-rollers are evidence of how much diversity remains to be documented; they should not be treated as additions to the four commonly reported species above.

The same report highlights the conservation stakes. Iliahia pahulu is considered critically endangered and is known only from a small grove of approximately 30 sandalwood trees on Lanai. A species can be scientifically new or locally restricted even while larger, more familiar moths dominate public sightings.

Lead author Kyhl Austin was quoted by the University of Hawaii as saying, “Hawaii is a world-renowned laboratory for evolution, but these moths have been hiding their true history in plain sight.” Professor Daniel Rubinoff likewise warned, “We are naming species just as they are disappearing.” Both statements refer to the 2026 leaf-roller work and underscore why a sighting should be documented rather than dismissed as an ordinary insect.

Native diversity, introduced species, and agricultural moths

Not every widespread Hawaiian moth belongs to the four-name list. University of Hawaii’s College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resilience reports that the corn earworm, Helicoverpa zea, was unintentionally introduced from North America in 1930 and is now common on all major islands. That is an example of an important agricultural moth, not evidence that it is one of the four moths selected from BAMONA’s commonly reported regional list.

This distinction matters when you are trying to identify an insect near a garden or crop. A moth’s economic importance, introduction history, or pest status cannot be inferred from its appearance in a general sightings list. Identify the insect first; seek management advice from a Hawaii agricultural extension source only after the species is established.

A practical decision path for an unknown Hawaii moth

  1. Decide whether it is an adult or larva. Adult moths have wings and scaled bodies; a caterpillar is a larval stage and may require host-plant evidence.
  2. Make a non-contact record. Photograph the insect where it is, note the date and locality, and estimate its size.
  3. Compare names, not assumptions. Check whether the four commonly reported names are plausible, but do not select one solely because it appears on a list.
  4. Seek an expert review. Submit photographs to BAMONA with location and date. For caterpillars, add host-plant information whenever possible.
  5. Preserve a specimen only when requested. If the University of Hawaii service asks for one, protect the wings between tissue, use a rigid container, and include collection data.
  6. Report unusual or sensitive finds carefully. For a potentially rare moth, avoid publicizing an exact micro-location until an expert advises you. Precise locality data can matter for vulnerable populations.

Using a general Hawaiian insect reference

Hawaii Biodiversity identifies Hawaiian Insects and Their Kin by F. Howarth and W. Mull, published in 1992, as an introductory volume covering Hawaiian insect groups and their origins and evolution. It is useful background for understanding the island fauna, but the available information does not verify current retail availability, edition details, or complete coverage of these four moths. Treat it as general context rather than a guaranteed field key.

Questions to answer before naming the moth

  • Where was it found? Island, locality, elevation, and indoor or outdoor setting.
  • When was it found? Include the full date and, if relevant, time of day.
  • What stage is it? Adult, caterpillar, pupa, or an empty case.
  • What was it doing? Resting, flying, visiting a light, feeding, or mating.
  • Was a plant involved? Record the plant species if known, or photograph it for later identification.
  • What evidence is available? Several sharp images are more useful than one heavily edited picture.

These details make a record reusable. They also prevent a common mistake: treating a plausible name as a confirmed identification when the evidence only supports a broader group.
