Four simple frozen dog treats—fruit pieces, melon-yogurt soft serve, broth cubes, and chicken-carrot-yogurt cubes—plus label, portion and choking-safety guidance.

Small portions of dog-safe frozen food can make a pleasant hot-day snack, but they do not prevent or treat heat illness. The four options below—frozen fruit, fruit blended with plain yogurt, broth cubes, and chicken-carrot-yogurt cubes—let you match texture and ingredients to your dog’s size, preferences, dairy tolerance and diet. Keep the pieces small, read every label for toxic sweeteners or seasonings, and ask your veterinarian before introducing new foods to a dog with a diagnosed condition or a restricted diet.

As Dr. Jerry Klein, chief veterinarian of the American Kennel Club, puts it: “The good news is that you can still spoil your dog on a hot day with vet-approved frozen treats and dog-friendly ‘ice cream’ options you can prepare and store in your freezer.”

What these frozen treats can—and cannot—do

A chilled treat can provide a cool, engaging snack and extra water when your dog is relaxing. It is enrichment, not a cooling protocol. A dog that may be overheating needs to be moved out of the heat and assessed by a veterinarian promptly; do not rely on a frozen snack to reverse heat illness.

Every dog handles ingredients differently. Dairy can cause digestive upset, some dogs need tightly controlled calories, and a medical diet may rule out otherwise wholesome foods. Start with a tiny taste, watch for vomiting, diarrhea or other unusual reactions, and stop offering that ingredient if your dog reacts. Treat calories count toward the day’s total rather than being “free” extras.

The AKC’s frozen-treat guidance covers these recipes and preparation ideas: Vet-Approved Frozen Summer Treats For Dogs and How to Make Frozen Dog Treats at Home.

Prepare safely before you freeze anything

  • Check the label every time. Plain ingredients can be reformulated. Look for no added sugar, flavoring, seasoning or sweetener where appropriate, and specifically check for xylitol (also called birch sugar). Xylitol can cause a dangerous drop in blood sugar and potentially liver damage. If your dog eats a product containing it, contact a veterinarian immediately. See the ASPCA list of people foods to avoid feeding pets.
  • Keep toxic foods out of the prep area. Never add grapes or raisins, chocolate, macadamia nuts, onion, garlic or other alliums. These are identified as hazards by the ASPCA and AKC.
  • Remove physical hazards. Take melon rind and seeds out before blending. Do not put wooden popsicle sticks into a frozen treat. Use a portion size your dog can lick or chew safely rather than swallowing whole.
  • Use suitable equipment. An ice-cube tray is a practical option. A silicone baking or treat mold is optional; the AKC notes that frozen treats generally release easily from silicone molds. Choose cavities that make pieces appropriate for your dog’s body size.
  • Keep portions modest. A few small fruit pieces or one small cube may be enough for a small dog, while a larger dog may handle a larger portion. Your veterinarian can help set a calorie budget, especially for dogs that are overweight or have a condition affected by diet.

1. Frozen fruit pieces

This is the fastest option: single-ingredient pieces that freeze firm and can be offered one at a time. Dog-safe examples include blueberries, banana, strawberries and peach. The AKC also suggests frozen green beans.

How to make them

  1. Wash fresh produce and remove stems, pits, leaves and any inedible parts. A peach pit must never be included.
  2. Cut the fruit or green beans into pieces your dog can manage without gulping.
  3. For packaged frozen produce, read the ingredient panel. Choose products with no seasoning, sauce, sweetener or other added ingredients.
  4. Spread the pieces in a single layer on a freezer-safe tray or place them in a silicone mold, then freeze until firm.
  5. Offer only a few pieces at a time and return the rest to the freezer.

Best uses and cautions

Fruit pieces require almost no preparation and make portioning straightforward. They are also the easiest choice when you want to avoid dairy. Bananas are relatively dense and sweet, so account for their calories; berries and green beans may be a lighter way to provide variety. If a particular fruit causes digestive upset, remove it from your rotation rather than trying to disguise it in another recipe.

2. Fruit and plain-yogurt soft serve

Blending frozen watermelon or cantaloupe with plain yogurt creates a spoonable, soft-serve texture. It feels more like a dessert while still using recognizable ingredients.

How to make it

  1. Remove the watermelon or cantaloupe rind and all seeds. Cut the flesh into chunks and freeze them.
  2. Choose plain yogurt with no added fruit, flavor, sugar or sweetener. Read the label carefully for xylitol; do not use it if xylitol appears anywhere in the ingredients.
  3. Blend the frozen melon with a small amount of yogurt until smooth enough to lick. Add only enough yogurt to reach the texture your dog can handle.
  4. Spoon the mixture into small portions, an ice-cube tray or an optional silicone mold, and freeze. You can also serve a small amount immediately as a chilled puree.
  5. Let a portion soften slightly if it is too hard for your dog to lick safely, and supervise the first serving.

Dairy and ingredient choices

Milk and dairy products can upset a dog’s stomach, and individual tolerance varies. The AKC suggests considering lactose-free yogurt or a dog-safe plant-based alternative when ordinary yogurt does not suit your dog, but the same strict label check still applies: no xylitol, chocolate, flavorings or unsafe additives. A plant-based product is not automatically safe simply because it is dairy-free.

Because melon is water-rich and yogurt adds calories, this mixture can become a substantial snack if served in large amounts. Freeze it in small cavities so you can count each piece and adjust the dog’s regular food accordingly.

3. Frozen broth cubes

Broth cubes are a simple, savory alternative when your dog is not interested in fruit. They can be offered as a lickable cube or dropped into the dog’s bowl as it melts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to make them

  1. Select chicken or beef broth labeled dog-safe and no-salt-added. Read the entire ingredient list for onion, garlic, other alliums, spices and xylitol.
  2. Pour the broth into an ice-cube tray or small silicone mold. Leave enough room for expansion as it freezes.
  3. For a small surprise, place a blueberry or a tiny dog treat inside each cavity before freezing. Confirm that the inserted item is also safe and fits the portion.
  4. Freeze until solid. Release one cube at a time and keep the rest frozen.

Why owners choose this option

The recipe has low preparation effort, no required dairy and a firm texture that encourages licking. Its savory smell can appeal to dogs that ignore sweet foods. A cube can also turn drinking into a brief enrichment activity as it melts, but it should not replace access to fresh drinking water.

“No salt added” does not guarantee that every ingredient is appropriate. Broths often contain seasoning blends, so inspect the label rather than relying on the front-of-package wording. If your dog is on a sodium-controlled or prescription diet, ask your veterinarian before using broth.

4. Chicken, carrot and yogurt cubes

This option is more substantial and savory-sweet. The AKC recipe uses skinless, boneless grilled chicken, plain yogurt, carrot and olive oil. It is best suited to dogs that already tolerate each ingredient and do not need a restricted diet.

How to make them

  1. Cook skinless, boneless chicken thoroughly, without onion, garlic, seasoning or sauces. Let it cool, then cut or shred it into small pieces.
  2. Prepare carrot in a dog-appropriate form and size. Avoid adding salt, butter, spice or sweetener.
  3. Combine the chicken and carrot with plain yogurt. Include the olive oil specified in the AKC recipe only in the recipe’s modest amount; additional oil raises calories.
  4. Spoon the mixture into small ice-cube or silicone-mold cavities. For a small dog, use smaller portions as the AKC recommends.
  5. Freeze until firm. Serve one appropriately sized piece while supervising your dog.

When to skip or modify it

Do not use this recipe if your dog reacts to dairy, chicken or any other ingredient. Dogs with pancreatitis history, food allergies, weight-management needs or another diagnosed condition may need a different treat entirely; obtain veterinary guidance instead of improvising substitutions. Removing yogurt changes the recipe’s texture, so do not assume a casual swap is nutritionally or medically equivalent.

Compare the four options

Treat Preparation effort Texture Dairy required? Portioning Enrichment potential
Frozen fruit or green-bean pieces Very low; wash, cut and freeze Firm pieces No Easy to count one piece at a time Short licking or chewing session
Melon and plain-yogurt blend Low to moderate; freeze, blend and portion Soft serve when partly thawed; firm when fully frozen Usually, although lactose-free or dog-safe plant-based alternatives may be considered Small mold cavities make servings consistent Licking keeps the dog occupied briefly
No-salt-added broth cubes Very low; pour and freeze Firm, slowly melting cube No Uniform cubes are simple to track Longer licking than a loose fruit piece; a safe berry or tiny treat can be frozen inside
Chicken, carrot and yogurt cubes Moderate; cook, chop, mix and freeze Dense, softens as it warms Yes, unless your veterinarian approves a suitable alternative Use smaller cavities for small dogs More engaging because of the mixed texture and savory smell

You can use the same mixtures in a hollow, durable rubber toy designed for your dog’s size and chewing style, then freeze the filled toy for a longer-lasting activity. The ASPCA advises matching chew items to an individual dog’s size and chewing behavior; discard any item that breaks apart or becomes a swallowing hazard.

Serving, storage and calorie checks

  1. Introduce one recipe at a time. A single new ingredient makes it easier to identify the cause of a reaction.
  2. Start small. Offer a taste, then wait to see how your dog’s stomach and stool respond before giving more on another day.
  3. Supervise frozen pieces. If your dog gulps, choose a smaller mold cavity, allow the piece to soften, or use a lickable puree instead of a hard cube.
  4. Count treats in the daily ration. Reduce regular food as needed so the snack does not push total calories beyond your dog’s plan. This matters particularly for small, sedentary or overweight dogs.
  5. Keep water available. A frozen snack is not a substitute for a clean bowl of drinking water or shade and rest during hot weather.
  6. Stop at the first sign of trouble. Vomiting, diarrhea, weakness or a suspected toxin exposure warrants a call to your veterinarian. Xylitol exposure is urgent even if the dog initially appears normal.

Foods and additives to keep out

Do not “improve” a dog treat with human dessert ingredients. Grapes and raisins, chocolate, macadamia nuts, onion, garlic and other alliums can be dangerous. Xylitol is especially easy to miss in frozen desserts, flavored yogurt, peanut butter and other sweet products, so read the label on every container. The ASPCA’s toxic-food guidance is available at People Foods to Avoid Feeding Your Pets.

Avoid wooden sticks, sharp fragments, large pits and melon rind. Even a safe ingredient becomes inappropriate when its shape or size creates a choking risk. Select molds and toys that produce pieces your individual dog can manage, and do not leave a powerful chewer alone with a damaged toy.

When veterinary advice should come first

Speak with your veterinarian before trying homemade frozen treats if your dog has a diagnosed illness, food allergy, history of pancreatitis, kidney or heart disease, diabetes, obesity, a prescription diet or another restriction. The appropriate recipe may be none of these, or it may require a specific ingredient and portion plan. The ASPCA’s position statement also emphasizes that treats and chews should be nutritionally appropriate and matched to the individual dog: ASPCA Position Statement on Dog Chews/Treats.

For a healthy dog without dietary restrictions, choose the simplest recipe that fits its preferences: fruit or broth for minimal preparation, melon-yogurt for a soft texture when dairy is tolerated, or the chicken mixture for a more filling, savory cube. Whichever you choose, keep the serving modest and treat it as enrichment—not as protection from dangerous heat.
