Baby manatees, called calves, are born much larger than most people expect: a newborn averages 4 to 4.5 feet long and weighs about 60 to 70 pounds. Calves are very dark at birth, nurse from their mothers, and stay under maternal care for roughly two years while they learn where to feed, find freshwater and shelter, and survive seasonal changes.
The five facts below focus on calves while separating measurements and behaviors that apply to manatees generally from details specific to the Florida manatee, a subspecies of the West Indian manatee.

1. Newborn manatees are surprisingly big
A newborn manatee is already about as long as a tall preschooler. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) reports an average birth length of four to four and a half feet and a weight of around 60 to 70 pounds. Those are averages, so an individual calf can be outside that range.
FWS also notes that Florida manatee calves are extremely dark at birth. As they mature, Florida manatees are generally gray, making the newborn’s nearly black appearance a striking early-life feature. A dark calf beside its mother can be difficult to spot in shadowed water, which is another reason boaters should keep their distance and obey manatee-speed zones.

Calf and adult size are not the same measurement
For perspective, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) describes adult Florida manatees as typically 9 to 10 feet long and about 1,000 pounds. The comparison shows how much growth occurs after birth, but it does not mean every adult or calf reaches exactly those numbers.
| Animal and life stage | Typical length | Typical weight | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Newborn manatee calf | 4–4.5 feet | About 60–70 pounds | Average newborn measurements reported by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service |
| Adult Florida manatee | Typically 9–10 feet | About 1,000 pounds | Typical adult profile from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission |
Calling a calf “adorable” does not make it a pet. It is a powerful wild mammal that needs its mother and a safe aquatic habitat from its first day.
2. A mother’s care lasts about two years
Manatee motherhood is unusually long. FWS says a calf nurses from teats located just behind its mother’s flippers and that the mother cares for it for about two years. The agency summarizes the nursing arrangement this way: “Manatee mothers nurse their calves by providing them with milk from teats located just behind their flippers.”

During this extended relationship, the calf remains close enough to follow the mother’s movements and learn from her choices. Maternal care is not only about milk. The mother’s experience helps the young manatee recognize useful feeding areas, freshwater and protected places, and navigate seasonal movements.
What dependence looks like
- Food: Nursing supplies the calf while it is developing the skills needed to forage on its own.
- Navigation: The calf follows a mother that already knows routes between feeding and resting areas.
- Safety: Staying with an experienced adult reduces the chance that a young animal will enter a dangerous or unsuitable area.
Two years is a long apprenticeship for a mammal. It gives a calf repeated opportunities to observe where vegetation grows, how to reach freshwater and which quiet areas offer shelter as weather and water conditions change. The length of the bond also explains why a lone calf deserves careful attention from wildlife professionals rather than an attempted rescue by a passerby.
A calf swimming beside its mother is therefore not an invitation for people to come closer. Approaching, touching or feeding either animal can interrupt the bond and put both at risk.

3. Manatees spend much of the day eating plants
Manatees are herbivores. FWS says manatees can spend up to eight hours a day eating vegetation and may consume as much as 10% of their body weight in a day. These are manatee-level figures, not separate measurements for newborn calves, so they should not be read as a precise feeding schedule or quota for an individual baby.

A mother can lead a calf to places where plant food is available, while the young animal gradually builds the ability to locate and handle forage itself. Food availability can differ from one waterway to another, so a calf’s daily routine is shaped by its mother and its habitat rather than by a fixed menu.
Why a calf’s diet should never be supplemented by people
Wild manatees have specialized diets and natural feeding patterns. Offering lettuce, other food or treats can draw them toward docks and boats, teach them to associate people with food, and increase collision risk. Human food also does not replace the mother’s milk or the diverse aquatic plants found in a healthy habitat. Watching from a lawful distance protects the calf’s normal behavior.
4. They breathe air even though they live in water
A baby manatee is an air-breathing mammal, not a fish. According to FWS, manatees usually surface every three to five minutes, yet they can hold their breath for as long as 20 minutes. The figures describe manatees generally; they are not a promise that every newborn will stay underwater for a particular length of time.
Surfacing is part of ordinary manatee behavior. A calf may rise with its mother, and both need clear access to the surface. Boat traffic, shoreline structures and floating debris can make that trip hazardous, especially in narrow waterways.

- Seeing a nose or back briefly does not mean a manatee is stranded.
- A long interval between sightings is not proof that a calf has been abandoned; the species can remain submerged for extended periods.
- Repeated circling, visible injury or entanglement calls for advice from local wildlife authorities rather than a rescue attempt by bystanders.

5. Mothers teach calves where they can survive
One of the most important lessons a mother provides is geographic. FWS says mothers teach calves how to migrate and where to find warm-water sites, forage, freshwater and sheltered areas. Those lessons matter because suitable habitat changes with season, water temperature and food availability.
Florida’s winter challenge
Florida manatees cannot tolerate temperatures below 68°F for extended periods. During winter cold, they concentrate in warm-water sites in peninsular Florida. A mother that knows a reliable warm-water refuge can guide her calf there, then return to feeding areas when conditions permit.
This temperature limit is specific to the Florida manatee information from FWS. It should not be presented as a universal rule for every manatee subspecies or every location. The West Indian manatee includes populations living across a broad range, and local conditions differ.
Where baby manatees live
Manatees use coastal and riverine environments that may be marine, brackish or freshwater. Areas near submerged vegetation can provide food, while quiet coves and other sheltered places offer resting habitat. A calf’s range is therefore tied to its mother’s movements and to the connected waterways that provide those basic needs.
The Florida manatee is a subspecies of the West Indian manatee. When a source gives a Florida-specific detail, such as the 68°F cold-tolerance threshold or winter gathering in peninsular Florida, that detail should not automatically be applied to manatees elsewhere. General statements about nursing, plant feeding and surfacing describe manatees more broadly, but individual behavior still varies.
How to watch a calf without harming it
Responsible wildlife watching means letting the mother and calf control the encounter. Stay on shore or in a boat at a legal distance, keep voices and movement calm, and follow posted manatee-protection zones. Do not swim after a calf, block a mother’s path, touch either animal or offer food.

These precautions are not just etiquette. FWS lists watercraft collisions, loss of forage and warm-water habitat, entanglement in fishing gear and marine debris, entrapment at high water, and crushing in navigation locks or other water-control structures among human-related threats. Cold snaps and red tide are additional hazards.

Why protecting calves protects the species
Manatees are federally protected under the Endangered Species Act and the Marine Mammal Protection Act. The FWC profile lists the Florida manatee as federally threatened. Protection works best when people reduce preventable dangers in the places mothers and calves feed, rest and travel.
- Observe speed limits and seasonal manatee zones on waterways.
- Keep fishing line, hooks and other debris out of the water.
- Do not alter or block access to warm-water refuges and sheltered habitat.
- Report an injured, entangled or unusually distressed animal to the appropriate wildlife authority instead of attempting hands-on help.
A healthy habitat gives a calf room to breathe, vegetation to learn to eat and safe routes to follow its mother. Those ordinary conditions are the foundation for the remarkable two-year apprenticeship that turns a newborn into an independent manatee.

How long does a manatee stay with its mother?
The mother nurses and cares for her calf for about two years. During that time she helps it learn feeding areas, freshwater, shelter and seasonal routes.
What do baby manatees eat?
Calves nurse from teats just behind their mother’s flippers. Manatees are herbivores, and the species can spend up to eight hours a day eating aquatic vegetation; the eight-hour and 10%-of-body-weight figures are general manatee figures, not a newborn’s exact allowance.
How long can a manatee hold its breath?
Manatees usually surface every three to five minutes but can hold their breath for as long as 20 minutes. Those figures describe manatees generally, so they do not predict every calf’s behavior.
Where do Florida manatees go in winter?
Florida manatees cannot tolerate temperatures below 68°F for extended periods. During cold weather they gather at warm-water sites in peninsular Florida, and mothers guide calves to dependable refuges.
Can I touch or feed a wild manatee calf?
No. Do not touch, chase, block, swim after or feed a calf or its mother. Follow posted speed restrictions and report injury or entanglement to local wildlife authorities instead of intervening yourself.
The Bottom Line
Baby manatees are large, dark newborns that depend on their mothers for about two years of nursing and survival lessons. They need clean waterways, abundant vegetation, safe access to air and warm-water refuges—especially Florida manatees in winter. Enjoy them from a lawful distance, and let the mother lead the calf.
